Waiheke coastal day walk circuit from Matiatia ferry via Oneroa.wmv
Coastal day circuit walk on Waiheke Island in New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf. The walk starts and ends at the Matiatia ferry terminal (regular ferries from Auckland and Devonport) and goes via Owhanake Bay and Oneroa Beach and town. The walking is easy on well-made paths, affords lovely views out over the inner Hauraki Gulf and introduces some of the delights of Waiheke. Enjoy !

Waiheke Island. Enclosure Bay sans seawall
Short video from 1961 showing Enclosure bay without the seawall, built to add more parking. At one stage the bay was to have a boat ramp... it got to the point where the bulldozer was down at the beach ready to commence building when the ;locals got together to stop it. All the large rocks at the stony end of the beach were put there for this boat ramp.

Catching the ferry...
Fishing is a must on the island. You can opt to hire a boat, in which case you'll go further out to see to catch b big snapper, or if you prefer there's rock or beach fishing. I've even seen someone use a little model boat attached to a big line on the beach. the boat goes out trawling, and the owner winches the fish back in. Effective!

Waiheke Island New Zealand Travel Vlog Part 5
In this video we feature Waiheke island which is about 30 minutes from Aukland. We rented a beautiful apartment (Sue's First House) for our last couple days in New Zealand. We enjoyed the best fish n chips ever at Little Oneroa Takeaway and an amazing fine dining meal at Mudbrick Vineyard. We would love to come back here and recommend it to all travelers!
Shelly Park | Maungamaungaroa Creek | Mangemangeroa Reserve | East Auckland
Shelly Park and the beach is situated 20 km (20 minutes drive) from downtown Auckland. You'll find a magnificent landscape of farmland, coastal native bush and stunning estuary views.
Mangemangeroa Reserve has a wide variety of native birds and is a walk that is steeped in Maori and early European history. Around the trig site are remnants of a fortified Maori site, and information about the use of the ridge as a traditional bird hunting area. The remains of Maori middens are also marked.
The reserve supports insect species including weta, the native cockroach and native bees. Most of the puriri trees are home to native moths. The creek provides a habitat for aquatic life including short-fin eels, banded kokupu and koura (fresh water crayfish).
In the estuarine area, pukeko and the shy banded rail (moho-pereru) prefer mangroves and rushes while the muddy channels attract kingfisher (kotare), white-faced heron, a variety of shags and variable and south-island oystercatchers (torea).
Along the forest track, you may see tui, New Zealand pigeon (kereru), fantail (piwakawaka), silvereye (tauhou) and grey warbler (rioriro). At night, listen for morepork (ruru) and in spring and summer for the shining cuckoo (pipiwharauroa). Exotic species include Californian quail and eastern rosella.
The varied native flora includes a large stand of rare mature coastal broadleaf forest that extends down to the edge of Mangemangeroa Creek. Large taraire, karaka, puriri, kohekohe and kowhai dominate the canopy throughout most of the forest.
There is also a small dense stand of young totara near the start of the bush section of the walkway. Smaller plant species such as mapou, mahoe, nikau palm and tree ferns are dotted throughout the reserve. The estuary features an extensive area of mangrove and saltmarsh vegetation including sea primrose, remuremu and arrow grass.

A productive property with so many options, this appealing coastal property is presently run as a self-contained dairy farm. It would equally make a great stock fattening property.
With pristine West Coast beach front, idyllic streams running through and backing onto pristine native forest, there are untold opportunities to develop tourist operations.

Sailing from Fiji to New Zealand
I flew into Fiji and within a couple of hours we were off! Along with my brother Nick, the boat's owner Mike, and his son Ryan, we set sail for New Zealand. Mike and his wife had spent the last few months sailing around the South Pacific and were heading to New Zealand to spend the summer sailing around there. Jaunts across the open ocean are not everyone's cup of tea, so myself, Nick and Ryan were invited on the trip to help Mike out on the relocation mission.
Very consistent winds for the first few days meant the sail hardly needed any adjusting, and the boat's autopilot kept us on course, leaving us to primarily focus on acquainting ourselves with a few days of life on a violently moving object. Winds died down for the last couple of days when we approached New Zealand, so the last section was done by motor on much calmer seas.
After the seasickness abated it was mostly a matter of settling into a routine that involved 6 hours on watch each day, and the remainder sleeping, lounging around, bantering about nonsense, and on the latter part of the trip, eating! Since my role entailed approximately zero skill, this trip doesn't exactly qualify me as a sailor, but definitely a new and worthwhile experience for me, and glad to have been a part of it!
