1st July 2010 Anogia Crete: Nikos Xylouris (Greek: Νίκος Ξυλούρης, 7 July 1936 - 8 February 1980), nicknamed Psaronikos (Greek: Ψαρονίκος, Grey Nick), was a Greek composer and singer from the village of Anogeia in Crete and also the older brother of two other great musicians of Cretan music, Antonis Xylouris or Psarantonis (Greek: Ψαραντώνης) and Yiannis Xylouris or (Psaroyiannis) (Greek: Ψαρογιάννης). His songs and music captured and described the Greek psyche and demeanor, gaining himself the title the archangel of Crete.

Dancing in the Cretan Streets 1961
This film is a bit choppy. It starts off in Xordaki, Akrotiri, Crete. Next, I think it jumps to Paidoxori, Apokorona, Crete, and then back to Akrotiri, Sternes, where there is dancing in Kosta and Eleni Verganelakis' house. Possibly for Stavro's Baptism, but I cannot be sure.
Antoni Panagirakis, the xorofilaka (police man), is a crafty dancer, who was one of the most passionate and loving people I've ever known, god rest his soul. You'll also catch Helen Sooklaris and Maria dancing in this feature film.
Notice the woman lyradzida, or rather, violistra (violinist), not very typical at that time. People are definitely dancing in the streets for these village celebrations. It is typical of the Cretan Kefi that needs no formal venue to occur.
Shot and Edited by Anthony Sooklaris (Tsouchlarakis) in 1961.
Enjoy!

Weaving at Anogia
At the village Anogia, textile art is the epitome of women's creation and the main occupation of women at home, until today. In this village, the textile art constitutes the connecting link between tangible cultural heritage (designs, and its immaterial forms) and intangible Cultural Heritage, expressed through inherited traditions and practices that accompany it.

Taverna Aerakis in Annoghia, Crete
Vangelis of Taverna Aerakis in Annoghia cooking up a storm at the BBQ. Fresh Lamb with mountain herbs. The tavern is located right across the street of the house of Crete's archangel Nr. 1 Nikos Xilouris. At the end of the meal Vangelis offered us some of his homemade cheese. Great place, great food.
