Know About Ooty Railways And It’s History
One thing that promises to be a highlight of your visit to Ooty is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway experience. If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty,
go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. The experience is really out of the world. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only
mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer,
to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train is the highlight of a visit to the popular hill station of Ooty, in south India's Tamil Nadu state. Established in the
early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government, Ooty now draws tourists wanting to escape the stifling summer heat.
The railway opened 1899 and was completed in 1908. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. The quaint toy train pulls blue and cream wooden
carriages with large windows.
Railway Features
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (Ooty), via Coonoor, in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. It's the only meter gauge,
rack railway in India. Also known as a cog railway, it has a middle rail fitted with a rack that engages a pinion on the locomotive. This provides traction
for the train to go up steep inclines. (Apparently, it's the steepest track in Asia, increasing from 1,069 feet to 7,228 feet above sea level).
The railway predominantly uses a fleet of X Class steam locomotives. In recent years, its vintage coal-fired steam locomotives have been replaced by new
oil-fired steam engines. This was necessary due to recurring technical snags, problems getting quality coal, and the risk of causing forest fires.
The retired steam engines will be exhibited at Coimbatore and Ooty railway stations, and the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Museum at Mettupalayam.
However, according to a news report, officials want to retain the heritage value of the railway and plan to reintroduce one of the coal-fired steam engines.
Unfortunately, it failed a trial run in February 2018, due to lack of steam pressure.
The train's steam engine is switched to a diesel one on the section between Coonoor and Ooty.
Route Features
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) long. It passes through many tunnels, and over hundreds of bridges (about 30 of them are large ones).
The railway is particularly picturesque because of the surrounding rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations, and thickly forested hills. Coonoor, with its world
famous teas, is a tourist destination in itself. The most spectacular scenery and best views are situated along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Hence,
some people prefer to only travel along this part.
How to Reach Mettupalayam
Coimbatore is the closest city to Mettupalayam. It's located about an hour south and has an airport that receives flights from all over India.
The daily 12671 Nilagiri (Blue Mountain) Express train from Chennai arrives in Mettupalayam at 6.15 a.m. and connects with the toy train's morning departure.
(It also connects with the toy train's evening arrival in Mettupalayam on the return journey). The Nilagiri Express stops in Coimbatore at 5 a.m. on the way,
so it's possible to take this train from there to Mettupalayam. Alternatively, a taxi will cost about 1,200 rupees ($18).
Frequent buses run from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam, starting from 5 a.m. There are also regular passenger trains between the two places during the day.
You'll find a few decent budget hotels in Mettupalayam if you want to stay there overnight to catch the toy train the next morning. However,
better accommodations are available in Coimbatore.

*****************************************************************
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2005. The starting point of this Railtrack is Udgamandalam (Ooty).
This steam engine train that runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty and back, stopping at hill stations such as Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale and Ketty enroute it’s a slow-motion, toy-sized version of a train journey against hilly, lush movie set backdrops and across bridges strung at daredevil altitudes. It evokes nostalgia for the 19th century, for those old songs from black-and-white films that had steam engines in them. It takes around five hours to reach Ooty from Mettupalayam, wherein you cross the verdant greens of Coonoor, Kallar, Adderley, Hill Grove, Runnymede, Kateri, Wellington, Aruvankadul, Ketti and Lovedale with around 13 tunnels along the stretch.
Tickets are priced at Rs 15 (General)and Rs 195 (for first class) but getting them is a big challenge. General tickets are sold over the counter and cannot be purchased in advance.
Railways security does a very good job in ensuring everyone sits in designated boogies.
Coonoor station was one of two used as locations in David Lean's film A Passage to India. Coonoor station and its heritage locomotive appear in many Indian films. Wellington station always finds a place in most of the films casting the Indian army or army training storyline, mainly due to the MRC Indian Army Regiment, Defence Services Staff College, the Cantonment and the Cordite Factory. Ketti station was used as the location in a Malayalam film Summer in Bethlehem. other Malayalam movies based on Ooty location Daisy, Kali, Kilukkam, Notebook, Oppam etc..Lovedale station is featured in many films including the Tamil hit, Moonram Pirai. The famous Hindi song Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se.. was shot on the rooftop of NMR. Udhagamandalam station has featured in many Tamil and other South Indian films. It is prominently featured in some Bollywood films. One of the X Class locomotives on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway was the model for Ashima in the film Thomas & Friends: The Great Race.
In the UK, the BBC made a series of three 2010 documentaries dealing with Indian Hill Railways, featuring NMR in the second programme. (The first film covers the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway and the third the Kalka-Shimla Railway.) The films were directed by Tarun Bhartiya, Hugo Smith, and Nick Mattingly, and produced by Gerry Troyna. The series won the UK Royal Television Society Award in June 2010.
Ooty is a year-round destination, but the ideal time to visit is between the months of April to June and September to November. However, depending on what you want to do, here’s a monthly breakup of Ooty’s climatic conditions so that you can plan accordingly:
March to June: These months constitute the summer season in Ooty. The weather during this time period is generally pleasant as you can venture out for day sightseeing and other tourist activities. The average temperature during summers does not rise beyond 20 degree Celsius.
July to September: These months constitute the monsoon season in Ooty. The town receives heavy rainfall and this might disrupt the routine day sightseeing activity for some of you. However, nature lovers would love the scenic beauty that embraces Ooty after the rain showers which is worth clicking many pictures.
October to February: During the month of October, the chilly wind enters the town but the overall day temperature is cool and good for sightseeing. November to February constitute the winter season in Ooty. Many couples visit Ooty during the winter season. Sometimes, the temperature can go below 5 degree Celsius also. Note that the nights in January and February are the coldest.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway (OOTY TO METTUPALAYAM)
UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the site then became known as Mountain Railways of India.
Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the line uses the Abt rack and pinion system to climb the steepgradient. On this rack section trains are operated by 'X' Class steam rack locomotives.
Starts from Mettupalayam at 07:12 and reaches Ooty at noon. The return train starts from Ooty at 14:02, and reaches Mettupalayam at 17:38.
The 'Nilagiri Passenger' train covers a distance of(41.8 km),travels through 108 curves, 16 tunnels, and 250 bridges. The uphill journey takes around 291 minutes, and the downhill journey takes 216 minutes.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway : Ooty Toy Train Ride INDIAN RAILWAYS
A musical documentation of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Ooty to Mettupalayam.
Watch the tiny train glide through forest and tunnels, over springs and viaducts, across the green meadows and sleepy stations. Led by a diesel engine (Golden Rock's YDM-4) from Ooty to Coonor (midway to Mettupalayam), the ride features tall forests and three tunnels. There are breathtaking views of lush tea gardens and small hamlets as we move by the Nilgiris.
The main attraction appears from Coonor as a steam locomotive takes charge. Enjoy the chugging through the numerous tunnels, over the viaducts, through green forests as tireless steam takes us to a joyride in the Nilgiris.
I was accompanied by my friend-cum-brother Tarun Pathak.
However, sincere thanks to Sayantan Banerjee for getting us the Tatkal tickets for this journey. Without that, this ride would not have been possible.

From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian Hill Railways.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a romantic line, popular with honeymooners and driven by love and devotion as well as steam. It chugs through the south Indian jungle up to a hill station, once known as Snooty Ooty.
The current guard is Ivan. Married for twenty years, he is concerned about his friend Jenni, the ticket inspector, because he's still a bachelor - but Jenni has a secret.
In the engine shed, Shivani, the railway's first female diesel engineer, is working on a steam loco. She has to make it look its best, as in the year of filming, 1999, the railway celebrated its centenary. The high point is the Black Beauty competition to pick the best engine on the line, but rains and landslides threaten the proceedings and the tourist business. Will love win out in the end?
