Niligiri Mountain Railways - Ooty Toy Train is the main attraction of Ooty. You will get a memorable experience while travelling in this Toy Train from
Mettupalayam to Coonoor or Ooty/Udagamandalam.
Know About Ooty Railways And It’s History
One thing that promises to be a highlight of your visit to Ooty is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway experience. If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty,
go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. The experience is really out of the world. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only
mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer,
to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train is the highlight of a visit to the popular hill station of Ooty, in south India's Tamil Nadu state. Established in the
early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government, Ooty now draws tourists wanting to escape the stifling summer heat.
The railway opened 1899 and was completed in 1908. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. The quaint toy train pulls blue and cream wooden
carriages with large windows.
Railway Features
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (Ooty), via Coonoor, in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. It's the only meter gauge,
rack railway in India. Also known as a cog railway, it has a middle rail fitted with a rack that engages a pinion on the locomotive. This provides traction
for the train to go up steep inclines. (Apparently, it's the steepest track in Asia, increasing from 1,069 feet to 7,228 feet above sea level).
The railway predominantly uses a fleet of X Class steam locomotives. In recent years, its vintage coal-fired steam locomotives have been replaced by new
oil-fired steam engines. This was necessary due to recurring technical snags, problems getting quality coal, and the risk of causing forest fires.
The retired steam engines will be exhibited at Coimbatore and Ooty railway stations, and the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Museum at Mettupalayam.
However, according to a news report, officials want to retain the heritage value of the railway and plan to reintroduce one of the coal-fired steam engines.
Unfortunately, it failed a trial run in February 2018, due to lack of steam pressure.
The train's steam engine is switched to a diesel one on the section between Coonoor and Ooty.
Route Features
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) long. It passes through many tunnels, and over hundreds of bridges (about 30 of them are large ones).
The railway is particularly picturesque because of the surrounding rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations, and thickly forested hills. Coonoor, with its world
famous teas, is a tourist destination in itself. The most spectacular scenery and best views are situated along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Hence,
some people prefer to only travel along this part.
How to Reach Mettupalayam
Coimbatore is the closest city to Mettupalayam. It's located about an hour south and has an airport that receives flights from all over India.
The daily 12671 Nilagiri (Blue Mountain) Express train from Chennai arrives in Mettupalayam at 6.15 a.m. and connects with the toy train's morning departure.
(It also connects with the toy train's evening arrival in Mettupalayam on the return journey). The Nilagiri Express stops in Coimbatore at 5 a.m. on the way,
so it's possible to take this train from there to Mettupalayam. Alternatively, a taxi will cost about 1,200 rupees ($18).
Frequent buses run from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam, starting from 5 a.m. There are also regular passenger trains between the two places during the day.
You'll find a few decent budget hotels in Mettupalayam if you want to stay there overnight to catch the toy train the next morning. However,
better accommodations are available in Coimbatore.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway Ride India Rail Tours History, Reviews, Photos of famous
Covering a distance of 46 km in around 5 hours, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway takes tourists from Mettupalayam to Ootacamund or Ooty. This is a truly amazing journey that takes tourists from a height of 1069 feet to 7228 feet. The history of the train can be traced back to the times when it was very difficult to reach Udhagamandalam - as Ooty was called in those days. Travellers needed to ride on a horse back or carried on 'dollies' through a forested path to reach Ooty. It was this access difficulty that gave birth to an idea of constructing a rail line to connect the hilly areas of Coonoor and Ooty from plains. The first thought was kept in the year 1854, however, it took around another forty years before the actual work could begin. A Swiss inventor, Riggenback worked on it, and built up the initial line upto Coonoor by the year 1899. Later, by 1908, the track was extended upto Fernhill and then Ooty. The uniqueness of this rail line lies in it being the steepest one in Asia. To cope with it, a unique system, ABT (Alternate Biting System) is used, which is also called the rack and pinion system. In this the method, pulling the train is quiet different from the usual one. Instead of the engine pulling the train on level lines, here there are two rack bars out of steps with each other between the rail lines. On these racks, the pinions of the train climbs in the same fashion as a person climbs a ladder. The engine, while going upwards, is on the backside to push the train from behind. On the other hand, it is on the front side on the return journey downhill so as to prevent any collision or derailing. Nilgiri Mountain RailThe journey itself from Mettupalayam to Ooty is full of scenic beauty enroute. Starting from Mettupalayam, a small place that sits on the banks of river Bhavani, the train passes through plain areas for the first five miles or so. Thereafter, in the next 12 miles the line rises to an impressive 4363 feet, and passes through nine tunnels. The tourists are treated to outstanding views of the eastern slopes of forested Nilgiris. From here, tourists can concentrate more on their left side as it is on this side that more beautiful views can be seen. The train passes amidst tranquil and serene views of Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale to finally reach Ootacamund. It covers a total distance of 116 km and crosses 250 bridges and 16 tunnels.

Black Beauty Contest on Nilagiri Railway, Coonoor
On the occasion of the centenary of the extension of the metre-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Coonoor and Ootacamund [Udhagamandalam], a Black Beauty Contest was held at Coonoor on Oct.18, 2008, in rainy weather and fog.
Seen here is the Swiss steam engine 37391-X, named Nilgiri Queen, chugging on the ramp toward the platform, with a display of steam. This steam display is specially staged for the parade.
This oil-fired steam engine, converted from coal-firing mode in 2007 at Golden Rock Workshop, Trichinopoly, India, was built by Swiss Locomotive Works, Winterthur, in 1949, and entered service on Nov. 8, 1952. It is still in use, pushing the train on the steep incline between Mettupalayam and Coonoor on the NMR.
