Nine Dragon Screen at Beihai park April 2017
The Chinese sculpting and creativeness never ceases to amaze me. The culture is just so beautiful and wonderful to understand and explore. Our guide said that there is over 600 dragons carved into this wall, that each tile used to make the wall has a dragon carved on the reverse side. Nothing in china is without purpose and reason. Each color of the dragons represents a particular meaning. Gold, or yellow represents Imperial or royalty.

Nine Dragon Screen / 九龙壁 (Forbidden City / 紫禁城)
A Nine Dragon Wall or Nine Dragon Screen / 九龙壁 is a type of screen wall with reliefs of nine different Chinese dragons. Such walls are typically found in imperial Chinese palaces and gardens.
In ancient times, in order to prevent wandering ghosts or spirits from sneaking into private residences, people set up a screen wall in front of their houses. Once wandering ghosts or spirits approached, they would see their own horrendous images, and then they would be scared away.
The Nine-Dragon Wall was built in 1733 (the 38th year of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty), dating back over 200 years. It is 67 feet long and 11.5 feet tall.
A legend explains the reasons why there are 9 dragons as opposed to 8 or 10. According to Zhou Yi (one of the oldest of the Chinese classic texts), nine symbolizes yang. Ancient Chinese categorized numbers into yang numbers and yin numbers.
Odd numbers signify yang, while even numbers represent yin, and nine is the largest yang number. It stands for the ultimate and the principle of Way. The dragon in the middle is the principle dragon, while those on either side are ascending dragons and descending dragons respectively. The principle dragon is in yellow, which is the noblest color, so emperor’s robes were yellow.

9 Dragon-Wall inside the Forbidden City - Beijing - China
This video shows you one of the 3 9 dragons walls that are left over in China. This one is located in the special area within the Forbidden City and it will cost you an additional 10 Yuan fee to get to that part. See the location for the exact place of this wall. This Nine-Dragon Wall was built in 1772 (the 38th year of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty), when the palace Ningshou gong was converted. It's 67 feet long and 11.5 feet tall. That's 29.4 meters long, 3.5 meters high & 0.45 meter thick. In terms of its artistic value and architectural design, nothing better exists than this. Though this Nine-Dragon Wall is nothing but a screen wall, it fully demonstrates the magnificence of the Forbidden City, as well as the pride and honor of the imperial family. Ordinary people’s screen walls were generally built with bricks, but the Nine-Dragon Wall used colored glaze. What's most striking and magnificent about the wall is the nine dragons. In Chinese culture, dragons signify a supreme status, and are an extraordinary mascot. That’s why emperors in ancient times often referred to themselves as a true dragon, and a son of heaven. Only emperors were qualified wear robes with dragon-shaped designs, and use the anything with paintings of dragons. The other 2 existing 9 dragon-walls can be seen in Datong, in the Shanxi province, 800 miles away, and in the Beijing Beihai Park.

9 Dragons Wall - Temple
There are totally three nine dragons' walls in China: the largest and most long history is in Datong Shanxi and it was built in Ming dynasty Hongwu period. Each of the three 9 Dragons Walls were made of gold, silver, jade along with other precious metals and stones. Imagine the unbelievable wealth in the Far East in those days. In fact, a great deal of the gold reserves in the U.S. have foreign gold included in total. Many of the great treasures throughout the centuries were hoarded and stolen.
He who has the gold makes the rules.
