Nine Mile Canyon: The Longest Art Gallery
Nine Mile Canyon is often referred to as the world's longest art gallery. Located in the state of Utah, the Canyon is five times longer than its name indicates and full of cliffs. But it is also loaded with thousands of ancient images or petroglyphs that go back in time to the mysterious disappearance of a Native American culture. Producer Zulima Palacio traveled to the remote region and brings us the story.
Nine Mile Canyon, RVing in Utah
After visiting Moab and the Arches NP we found a much slower paced place to stay and another equally peaceful place to visit. We stayed at Huntington State Park near Huntington, UT, just south of Price. North East of Price is a canyon called Nine Mile Canyon. It's name isn't actually related to its length, it probably came from a railroad surveyor who was sectioning a map and it happened to be on the nine mile section. It's a neat drive with plenty to look at. Watch out for falling rocks! We saw one that had fallen very recently. The pictographs go back almost 2000 years. Amazing.

Helper, Utah - A town with a past, and now a present and likely a future.
What can we learn from a rural town in the central Utah mountains? I say quite a bit! Based upon what I saw in 2012 which looked very much like the epitome of America in decline - and now just 7 years later, a town with strong signs of renewal everywhere! What happened to turn things around and who are the heros of this story? Allow me to introduce them...

Little Yellowstone, Little Lake Powell, & Little Grand Canyon in Duchesne County, UT
Did you know that you can visit national landmarks in the country by visiting just one county in Utah? Duchesne County has 3 Little landmarks - Little Yellowstone, Little Lake Powell (aka Starvation Reservoir), and Little Grand Canyon (aka Wrinkles Road)
ABOUT LITTLE YELLOWSTONE
Visit Little Yellowstone in Duchesne County. It doesn't have geysers, but you can ATV to it! It is called Little Yellowstone because of the yellow rock formations created by sulfur. There is a river by it that has awesome fishing as well. (Directions below)
What is really cool about this location is that you can climb and hike on and around the rock formations (be careful though, steep ledges and crumbly rock). The trail to get here is rocky but very short. Once you get to the overlook it is beautiful - looks very similar to Bryce Canyon formations.
LITTLE YELLOWSTONE DIRECTIONS:
- Turn north off Hwy 40 in Duchesne at the stop light onto state rd 87.
- Stay on 87 for approximately 15 1/2 miles then turn north(left) toward Mountain Home. Sign will read, Upper Stillwater, Rockcreek, Moon Lake.
- Continue on that road for approximately 8 miles then turn east(right) onto the Yellowstone Canyon road. Sign will read Yellowstone Canyon.
- Cross the bridge and turn north(left) and in approximately 4 1/2 miles you are at the atv trail head.
ABOUT LITTLE LAKE POWELL
Starvation Reservoir in Duchesne County, has been dubbed Little Lake Powell by visitors because of the warm and clear water, and sand cliff formations for cliff jumping.
THINGS TO DO AT STARVATION RESERVOIR:
There are sandy beaches close to or away from campgrounds. If you want to ATV, Knight Hollow campground allows you to camp and ATV at the same time, also close to the lake. There is also RV camping spots with hook-ups. They have a concession stand to rent PWC and boat rentals, water toys, water trampoline, paddle boards, and kayaks (
ABOUT LITTLE GRAND CANYON
Wrinkles Road in Duchesne County has been dubbed Little Grand Canyon. Its at the very bottom of Duchesne County and is not well known to even the locals. The land surronding is flat that opens up into a large canyon.
LITTLE GRAND CANYON DIRECTIONS:
- Approximately 1 mile west of Myton, turn south off of highway 40. Road sign says Pleasant Valley. Sandwash Boat Ramp, Nine Mile Canyon.
- Approximately 1 1/2 miles turn south west(right) . Road sign says Wellington, Wells Draw.
- Approximately 23 miles the pavement ends, continue on dirt road approximately 1 1/2 miles to Sandwash Boat Ramp intersection. Turn east(left).
- You are now on Wrinkles Road. It continues all the way to the Green River(the waterway not the town).

Welcome to Duchesne Utah!
Duchesne is located just west of the junction of the Strawberry and Duchesne rivers in the Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah. The Duchesne River drains the southwest slope of the Uinta Mountains, and the Strawberry river drains the eastern slopes of the Wasatch Range and is connected to Strawberry Reservoir. The two rivers combine at Duchesne, and the Duchesne River continues east to join the Green River at Ouray, Utah.
Native stands of cottonwood trees and willows grow along the river banks, while sagebrush and rabbitbrush fill the un-irrigated bench tops. Alfalfa is the main cultivated crop of farmers in the area.
Via highway, Salt Lake City is 114 miles (183 km) to the west, Vernal is 58 miles (93 km) to the east, and Price is 54 miles (87 km) to the south.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2), all of it land.
1905–1906 On June 7, 1905 the Secretary of the Interior directed the Commissioner of Indian Affairs to select one or more tracts of land in the Uintah Reservation suitable for townsites, so they might be reserved as such under the statutes of the United States.[8] Three sites were designated, which are the current sites of Duchesne, Myton, and Randlett. A month later President Theodore Roosevelt approved the selections and declared these lands reserved as townsites. On August 28 the US government opened up the Uintah Basin to settlement of land they had acquired from the Ute Indians under the allotment act of 1891. Land lotteries were held in Vernal, Provo, Price, Grand Junction, Colorado, and Vernal, where each person was given a ticket with a number. On August 28 numbers 1 through 111 were allowed to make their claim. On August 29 the next 111 people could make their claim and so on. 60 people, 46 adults and 14 children settled on the townsite that is now Duchesne and called it by its first name, Elsie (Glen). Government surveyors laid out the streets, and the survey was accepted by the government on 18 October 1905. The first cabin was built by Charles Dickerson and Charles Ragland in October 1905. A.M. Murdock with the help of a few men put up a large circus tent to act as a trading post and post office. The name of the town was changed to Dora for a short time, after Murdock's 23-year-old daughter, then changed once again to Theodore, in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. On September 15, 1905, Robert Duchesne Marsh was the first white child born in the townsite. The first winter was harsh, and the residents were living in tents or other temporary shelter. When spring came the high water of the Duchesne River overflowed its banks, flooding the town. Many of the homesteaders' dreams died after the first winter, and they sold their claims off for next to nothing. Judge M. M. Smith recalls, One man asked me to write out a relinquishment for him, remarking, 'I must either give up my claim or my wife. She won't live here.' Dikes were quickly built up but washed away, and some of the town was under 2 feet (0.61 m) of water until June. Tents and houses were moved around to avoid the flooding problem before the next spring.
The flooding continued annually until 1910[9] when $5,000 was finally given to make the four river cut-offs needed to fix the problem. In 1906 the first bridge was built by Wasatch County across the Duchesne River in east Theodore.

Palo Duro Fly In 2016. Wayside, Texas
Wow! This is a short video of the Palo Duro Canyon Texas Fly-In held in Wayside Texas by the (B.A.R.F) Club. (Bay Area Recreational Flyers). Thanks to the club we were able to camp with them along the rim of the Canyon, the second largest Canyon in the USA, other then the Grand Canyon and tag along with them through four states flying in some of the most beautiful country you have ever seen. Unfortunately mother nature didn't quite corporate with us. The winds were way to high to fly safely as you can see in the video so we left Texas for New Mexico, then onto Arizona and then into Utah. Had some of the best times ever, meeting some of the club members and flying with them in all the different areas and can't leave out the eating, and I'm talking about EATING. These people know they can cook up some good grub.
My bride and I would like to say special thanks to everyone in the group for letting us tag along for such a memorable trip of a life time.
