Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga (Far North-New Zealand)
DescriptionNinety Mile Beach is on the western coast of the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. It stretches from just west of Kaitaia towards Cape Reinga along the Aupouri Peninsula. 90 Mile Beach may not be exactly 90 miles long – but it’s not short on natural beauty or exciting things to do.
Cape Reinga / Te Rerenga Wairua is the northwesternmost tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. Cape Reinga is more than 100 km north of the nearest small town of Kaitaia.
Up North: Kaitaia (Cape Reinga, 90 Mile Beach, Te Paki Stream & Sand Dunes)
23-25 January 2016
From Hamilton to Kaitaia, it takes about a 6-8 hr drive (depending on stopovers of course :D ). This beautiful city is perfect for a summer trip as it has different sceneries such as the smooth sand dunes, bay areas for picnics, the famous Cape Reinga (In Maori beliefs sacred place of the spirits of the recently deceased.) and so much more..

90 MILE BEACH NEW ZEALAND
#zaireey,
ninety-mile-beach
Renowned for spectacular sunsets and boasting one of the best left hand surf breaks in the world, Ninety Mile Beach is an almost never-ending paradise.
Ninety-Mile Beach is the fabled strip of sand that stretches from Ahipara to Scott Point, five kilometres south of Cape Maria van Diemen. Truth be told, it is actually 88 kilometres long.
This beach is officially a highway, but is really only suitable for 4WD vehicles and is safe to drive only at specific times of the tides. Rental companies won’t allow their cars on the sand, mostly for safety reasons. The easy way to drive along the beach is to catch a coach tour from Kaitaia. If you are short of time in Northland and staying in the Bay of Islands, coach tours and scenic flights up to Cape Reinga depart from Paihia daily.
Beach activities range from surfcasting and swimming to bodyboarding down the sand dunes. A special treat is digging for tuatua (a native shellfish) in the sand at low tide. Flanking the beach is the Aupouri Forest, which provides a green escape from the hot sun.
Once a year in late February or early March, 90 Mile Beach hosts a five day fishing competition. Hundreds of anglers surf cast from the beach hoping to catch the biggest snapper, a delicious white-flesh fish found in New Zealand waters.

Dune Rider-2To the west of Kaitaia is the coastal village of Ahipara, here you can enjoy golf, sandsurfing, 4WD treks, quad bike riding, Blokarting, fishing from the beach, surfing and diving.
Although named Ninety Mile Beach it is actually only 64 miles long stretching from Ahipara the small coastal village near Kaitaia to almost the top of the North Island.
The best way to appreciate this part of the Far North to Cape Reinga is to travel by plane from the Bay of Islands or with local bus tour operators that offer daily trips departing from The Bay of Islands or Kaitaia. You will learn the history and legends of the region including various points of interest and enjoy a drive along the magnificent sometimes wild west coast of Ninety Mile Beach.
Leaving the Ninety Mile Beach at Te Paki quick sand stream it’s time to try Sand boarding on the giant sand dunes of Te Paki before heading for Cape Reinga, which although it is not quite the furthest northern point of New Zealand its where the road journey ends. Twelve degrees below the Tropic of Capricorn, Cape Reinga thrusts its head north to bask in subtropical sunlight.
Here, under the wind-whipped Cape Reinga lighthouse, the Tasman and Pacific oceans meet, colliding in a fit of fury and spitting salty spray high as they battle for dominance.
Maori believe that at Cape Reinga, “the place of the leaping”, the spirits of the departed leap from an 800-year-old pohutukawa tree on the windswept cape to begin the voyage back to their final resting place in the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki.
Other points of interest are the views down To Cape Maria Van Diemen, and the beautiful beach at stunning Tapotupotu Bay, a sandy beach that is nestled on the eastern side of Cape Reinga. For the tramper there are numerous walks from short or multi day walks staying at Department of Conservation camp sites.

Just a short walk through the sand dunes, brings you to the southern end of 90 Mile Beach at Ahipara, and easy access to the tube surfing waves of the West Coast. With plenty of shelter, the 40785 square metres (more or less), is a mix of flat land surrounded by neighbouring lifestyle blocks. Pick a site for your dream home where the family will thrive on outdoor living, with sand, surf and fishing on your doorstep.
The small township of Ahipara boasts a restaurant, superette, primary school, petrol station, all the essentials. Take the family for an hour drive to the top of New Zealand at Cape Reinga, or take the short 10-minute drive to Kaitaia for all the amenities you need.

This beach is officially a highway, but is really only suitable for 4WD vehicles. We had an awesome time cruising along the beach after a day at Cape Reinga, headed back toward the Bay of Islands.
