Konnichi wa mina-san TOTTI desu!!! ????
Der schönste Strand Japans auf der Insel Hateruma stand heute auf meiner Reiseliste. Mit meiner DJI Spark und meiner Schnorchelausrüstung fuhr ich mit der Fähre vom Ishigaki Port los (hin und zurück ca. 6000 Yen/60 Min.). Leider konnte ich keine Schildkröte finden, aber es war trotzdem ein herrlicher Ausflug und ein unvergesslicher Ort.
Den nächsten Tag startete ich auf Ishigaki mit dem Bus (720 Yen/ca. 40 Min.), um einen weiteren berühmten Strand Japans aufzusuchen: Kabira Bay. Hier ist es jedoch verboten zu schwimmen, da die Strömung zu stark ist. Aber eine wunderschöne Aussicht hat man auf jeden Fall.

Nishihama Beach is an hour away by boat from Ishigaki Island, natural beach in Hateruma Island. Nishi is north in Okinawa dialect, located in the north part of Hateruma island. Nishi Hama is one of the most popular beaches in Yaeyama. “Nishi” means east in Japanese, but it means north in Okinawan dialect. That’s why the beach called Nishi Hama is located in the northern part of the island. It’s almost a kilometer long with white pure sand, and ocean color is especially emerald green.
Most of beaches in Yaeyama are very beautiful, but the Nishi Hama beach is even beyond beautiful. Sand at the beach is so smooth, and after walking toward east, there is a plant community called Hama Shitan. Plants are said to be at least a couple of hundred years old. The sunset time is more than special! The color of the ocean changes as the sun dips in the west and the sight’s out of sight. The swimming is good at the beach too.
Hateruma, the origin of a word “the island of Uruma (coral reef) of the end” is an inhabited and the southernmost island in Japan. The sea color in Hateruma is also called “Hateruma blue” which has unique blue brightness, especially, Nishi Beach is the most famous with its beautiful sea in Yaeyama. Takanazaki, located in the southern end of island, has a monument in the southernmost place of Japan and Starlit Sky Observation Tower, therefore it is a popular sightseeing spot

Editor’s Note: Okinawa’s beautiful southern islands are being showcased in Japan Update each week. This week, travels move to Hateruma Island, the farthest south and one of the most colorful islands in the Yaeyama chain.
Hateruma means “Uruma of the edge”, Uruma means Coral leaf and Hate means edge or the end. That fits Hateruma island, the southernmost inhabited island in Japan.
It is only one hour from Ishigaki island by a ferry, and just 14km around. The ocean surrounding Hateruma looks especially blue in color, and people call it “Hateruma Blue”; many describe it as one of the most beautiful oceans in Yaeyama archipelago. There are a lot of old style houses and huge sugar cane fields on this really primitive island. There are some pensions and guesthouses, and the island is famous for having not a single traffic light.
Street lights are also small in numbers, and you can watch a lot of stars at night time. There are some sightseeing places, but the locals’ recommend doing nothing while on the island. Except giving the local awamori a try. The “Awanami” awamori is made on Hateruma Island, but the availability is very limited, and the price would be much higher if one happens to find it outside of Hateruma island

Hateruma (波照間島; Hateruma-jima; Yaeyama: Patirooma, Hateruma dialect: Besїma our island, Okinawan: Hatiruma) is an island in the Yaeyama District of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.[1] Part of the town Taketomi, it is the southern-most inhabited island in Japan at 24°2’25 north latitude, 123°47’16 east longitude. Hateruma is one of the Yaeyama Islands, and is located 24 kilometres (15 mi) south of Iriomote-jima, the largest of the island group.[2]
Hateruma, which is composed of corals, has 12.7 km² of area and approximately 600 inhabitants.
The primary products of the island include sugarcane, pineapple, refined sugar, and Awanami（泡波）, a highly prized type of the alcoholic beverage awamori. Its southern location makes it one of the few places in Japan where the Southern Cross can be observed.
