Nisyros & it's active volcano in the Dodecanese islands of Greece
Nisyros lies in the Aegean Sea & forms part of the Dodecanese group of islands. The island's claim to fame is the famous active volcano that's last major eruption was 16000 years ago. Hours can be spent wandering around the 10 hydrothermal craters with their wonderful names: Stefanos, Polyvotis, Alexandros.
There are two main villages on the island, Mandraki being the largest, and where you will jump on & off the ferry services that run from Piraeus, Kos and Rhodes to the island.

Sailing in the Dodecanese Greece to Kos Yali & Nisyros | Sailing Kejstral Adventures S03E04
With Kejstral now back to full health we sail NW to the Greek island of Kos, and get hit by the notorious acceleration zone on the NE tip of the island. The first seam down from the head on the mainsail fails and we are forced to take it in for repair. Zlatco runs a small sail repair business opposite Kos marina and does an amazing job, not only repairing the seam, but beefing up areas on the sail that look suspect, all for a very reasonable cost.
We meet up with good friends Rob & Carole Stone on S/Y Darksyde, before heading off firstly to Yali, and then on to the volcanic island of Nisyros.
This volcano is one of the very few where you are able to get right into the crater, and being down there certainly takes your breath away!

Nisyros, a Volcanic Greek Island in the Aegean Sea
Nisyros is a volcanic Greek island and municipality located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos. Its shape is approximately round, with a diameter of about 8 km. Several other islets are found in the direct vicinity of Nisyros, the largest of which is Gyali.
Nisyros, with fewer than 1000 permanent inhabitants, is famous for having the only active volcano in Greece together with Santorini. The island is essentially a volcanic cone with a large collapsed caldera in the center. It is possible to walk into the volcanic crater and view the smoking fumaroles at close hand.
The island is reachable by ship from Piraeus and Kos, and in summer, there are many daily trips from the village of Kardamena on Kos. There is also a heliport. There are two main villages on the island; Mandraki in the north-west (where the ferries dock) and Nikea, up on the edge of the volcanic rim to the south. According to the 2011 census, the municipality's resident population is about 1,000, although in summer it is augmented by many tourists as well as expatriate Nisyrians who visit the island for their vacations. Tourism is not so heavily developed as on other Greek islands.
According to Greek mythology, the island was formed when Poseidon cut off a part of Kos and threw it onto the giant Polybotes to stop him from escaping. The volcano is currently active (but not erupting), and fumaroles are found at the craters. It has had four historical eruptions. The latest eruptive activity was a steam explosion in 1888, after small ash eruptions in the 1870s.
