Nk'Mip Cellars - Osoyoos
In this video, we talk to Canada's first native winemaker Justin Hall about his dedication to Nk'Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery is located within the Spirit Ridge Resort in the town of Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery was conceived of and is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, of which Hall is an elder. In the course of our visit with Hall, we talked about garrigue, a French term that is used to describe a flavour in wine that is attributed to the fragrant plants growing in that country. Anthony Gismondi identified a similar but unique herbaceous flavour in the South Okanagan wines and he asked Hall if there might be a word similar to garrigue in the Okanagan language of his band. Hall said he would ask some of the elders, who immediately came back with a term we've used as the title for this film. Hall says the word in the intro as well as the definition. Hall has trained under head winemaker Randy Picton and now heads the white winemaking for Nk'Mip.

BC Winegrowers - Nk'Mip Cellars - Osoyoos
Winemakers Randy Picton and Justin Hall along with legendary grape grower Sam Baptiste (Inkameep Vineyards) take you on a tour of Nk’Mip’s two main vineyard sites. We talk about ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and picking fruit at different times to balance flavours and winemaker Randy Picton reminds us of how little winemaking is done at Nk'Mip to respect the true characteristics of the vineyard. As North American’s first Aboriginal owned and operated winery, Nk’Mip wines represent native qualities of strength, pride and the deep historical roots of the Osoyoos Nation.
Nk'Mip Cellars - Canada's First Native Winery
Chief Clarence Louie joins Anthony Gismondi to offer some history and culture behind Nk'Mip Cellars, which is owned by his Osoyoos Indian Band. The winery is a part of their Spirit Ridge Resort, which includes a hotel, a stand alone restaurant a cultural centre and a golf course. They had considered creating a winery but it wasn't until the early 90s when Don Triggs, executing the Big Idea through his company Vincor, offered to lease hundreds of acres of vineyards from the band, that the band realized it could become a reality. They used Vincor's expertise, as a multinational wine marketing and distribution company, to create Nk'Mip, and launched the first native winery in North America, possibly the world.
The winery has incorporated elements of its culture including the Four Food Chiefs, which the Chief explains. The Bear, Salmon, Bitterroot and Saskatoon Berry are included in a mosaic in the center of the winery's tasting room and the restaurant inside the winery pairs dishes made from them, with their wines.
The development has been a success, topped by band member Justin Hall becoming the head white winemaker.
Be sure to watch the other two videos in this series, A New Expression in Wine Justin Hall tells us about his approach to winemaking in a desert climate and shares an Okanagan language word that describes a quality found in wines unique to the region. In Food Pairing Hall and Anthony Gismondi, talk about matches with the wines as Hall reflects on his sharing his culture with guests.

Rolling Batonnage at Nk’Mip Cellars
Watch the mesmerizing and unexpected way lees mix with wine during the new batonnage - rolling the barrel, not stirring. This was filmed during The Vancouver Sun’s recent visit to Nk’Mip Cellars where they had added a clear top and bottom to one of their barrels so they could see the interaction for themselves. Before assistant winemaker Justin Hall performed the batonnage, we placed a large LED light behind the barrel to highlight the effect.
