Evoke DIALOG | Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre | Osoyoos, BC
The People of the Okanagan Nation, live in eight communities in the interior of British Columbia and Washington. Over 400 band members live and work on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve which stretches from Oliver to Osoyoos. On this Reserve is the romantically set Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre (Nk’Mip).
Completed in 2007, this 1,600 acre desert conservation area – the largest remnant of the Great American Desert- is one of Canada’s most endangered places. Stewarding for its protection, the The Osoyoos Indian Band wanted a place with purpose. Here you can Discover the desert ecology and wildlife, Hear the legends of Sen’klip (Coyote) in two multi-sensory theatres, Meet interpreters who give daily trail walks. See eye-to-eye with a Western Rattlesnake. Experience the beauty of Nk’mip’s sage and antelope-brush desert environment
All the Cultural Centre’s educational program pass knowledge, restoring the great divide of First Nation’s youth and their culture.
The architectural expression pushes the boundaries of First Nation’s architecture. Far too often Aboriginal design is visually inferred by times past, while Nk’Mip deliberately celebrates a culture’s present. As advocates for the expression of pluralism through design we’re grateful for all we learned from The Sylix people, and hope The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center inspires First Nation’s youth to join the place-making expression.

Coyote Spirit Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre - Osoyoos Indian Band
SYNOPSIS: It is a dramatic, reflective story about a young teen-age native girl (Lisa) living in the city who is returning to the Osoyoos Indian Band Reserve to spend the summer with her grand parents. She arrives in a sullen mood at the prospect of spending 2 whole months of her summer on the reserve with these 2 elders whom she has lost touch with. Under the love, patience, and guidance of her grandparents, we slowly see Lisa’s negative attitude change into appreciative awareness and understanding of her native culture and the strong sense of belonging and identity that is kindled within her. At the end of the film we then see Lisa as a young adult, returning to spent time with her grand parents with a different sensibilities to her culture.

About Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre:
Earth walls dissolve building into landscape using rammedearth
The design of NkMip Desert Cultural Centre is a specific and sustainable response to the buildings unique context-the unusual Canadian desert found in the South Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Sited adjacent to a remnant of the Great Basin Desert, of which 1,600 acres are being preserved by the Osoyoos band as a conservation area, this interpretative centre is part of a larger 200-acre master plan.
The partially submerged, 820 m2 building contains exhibits that celebrate the culture and history of the Band, and is designed to be an extension of the remarkable site. The desert landscape flows over the buildings green roof, held back by a rammed earth wall which, at 80m long, 5.5m high and 600mm thick, is the projects most visible green design feature.
