Small island produces big wines
LEADIN:
A small island off the coast of New Zealand's mainland is producing some full-bodied wines that are packing a punch on the international wine scene.
Just a short ferry ride from Auckland, the island winemakers are sipping on their success internationally.
STORYLINE:
It's harvest time at Obsidian vineyard on the island of Waiheke, just off the coast of Auckland in New Zealand.
These merlot grapes are now being handpicked and could go on to make another award-winning bottle of wine.
Waiheke is small and measures around 36 square miles.
It's home to just over eight-thousand people, but there are some 24 branded vineyards, each of them independently owned.
Despite its size, the island is punching well above its weight in producing some of New Zealand's best red wines.
The largest vineyard on the island produces around 35-thousand cases of wine annually, but the smaller ones average around three to four thousand cases each.
Obsidian grows a wide range of grapes including Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier and Montepulciano along with the Bordeaux varieties of Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvginon and Cabernet Franc.
Obsidian won Gold medal and Trophy for its sister label Weeping Sands Syrah 2010 at New Zealand's Spiegelau International Wine Competition in 2011.
Winemaker Mike Wood has been working for Obsidian since 2005, after training in Germany and Australia.
He says wine here is distinct.
One of the things that really separates Waiheke from other regions is the overall structure of the wine, he says.
The tannin profile of the wines here tends to be very rounded and smooth and so I think we are achieving a really good level of physiological ripeness and that's down to, I think, the soils, the climate. Yeah, it's very unique.
Waiheke Island is some 17 kilometres (10 miles) off the coast of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland.
The island is characterised by its beautiful beaches, steep hills, an ocean-cooled climate and plenty of sunshine. It's a popular tourist destination.
Rob Meredith owns Waiheke vineyard, Peacock Sky.
He's also President of the Waiheke Winegrowers Association.
According to Meredith, there are several factors which turn grapes from Waiheke into great wine.
One is the climate, obviously, he says.
It's a component of what the French refer to as 'terroir'. So the beautiful climate here, we have an ocean buffered climate, so quite temperate, not too cold at night, no frost to worry about and not too excessively hot during the day. Coupled with that we've got some quite interesting soil types here. Generally they're highly mineralised soils, which is normally quite beneficial to growing particularly the red varieties, that really got the ball rolling on Waiheke.
Meredith says in 2013, 600 tons of grapes were harvested on the island which then went on to produce half a million bottles of wine.
Wine sales alone are worth around $20 million New Zealand dollars ($17 million USD) to the island's economy.
Meredith says the large number of awards wines from Waiheke have received, both nationally and internationally, suggests the island is overachieving.
He claims it's characteristic of the fact that producers on Waiheke are small and therefore focus on quality.
But commercial wine growing has not been happening here for long.
Stonyridge is one of the island's first vineyards and was set up in a little over 30 years ago in 1982.
The vineyard is a Cabernet-blend winegrower and has Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot grapes on their vines.
It has a strong international reputation and its Stonyridge Larose is known throughout the world.
Right now, it's autumn in New Zealand and across Waiheke these grapes are being harvested.
