Tokyo Tour 3: Ueno Park | Broads In Japan
In the first semester, Meghan and I took a Tokyo Studies class where we went on 4 different tours around Tokyo.
On this trip we started in Ueno Park and visited the Shinobazu Pond (walking through the temple at the beginning to get there.) The pond is famous for its lotus plants, that were all dead at the time because it was cold T T. The road around the pond was used for horse racing between 1884-1892. The temple in the middle is called Kan'eiji Temple, but it is only a fraction of what it used to look like, for it was destroyed and later rebuilt after World War 2. What I found interesting, is on the walk to the temple, at 0:55 there is a shrine dedicated to glasses :P
Then we went to the Shitamachi Museum, which is next to the pond. It shows the important changes that took place in the early Taisho period, specifically Japans introduction to pop culture. The first floor has a model of a Taisho town, and the second floor has pictures of old Ueno and a play area of toys from this era.
I tried to explain more in the video, but I didn't want to be too loud and disruptive, so the audio didn't turn out too well, sorry...
Then we walked to Iwasakitei Teien, which is the home of the Iwasaki family, the founder of the Mitsubishi financial group. The house was designed by an English architect in 1877. I really recommend you visit if you like European style architecture.
What I was saying in the video is that the CIA stayed in the house when they were trying to make Japan an open country, and in the back there is a building that was made just for the a pool table.
Next was Yushima Tenjin shrine, dedicated to learning and is often visited by students taking Tokyo University's (the best university in Japan) entrance exam. What's interesting is that you need to take a staircase to get to the shrine, but you have a choice between men or ladies. The Ladies Hill has wider steps becasue it was built at the time when all women wore Kimonos, which don't give the legs much movement, so the Men's Hill was too steep.
We then went to Nogi Shrine, dedicated to General Nogi Maresuke, a hero of the Russo-Japanese War.
At the very end of the video, only a few clips, was Togo Shrine, dedicated to the navy. There is a replica of a missile in the garden, and (not shown) pictures that run around the shrine area that depict the war's high points.

Suitengu is best known as the shrine in Tokyo to visit for safe childbirth. Until the Second World War, Suitengu was the center of commercial activity in Ningyocho, with crowds flocking here from all over Tokyo on the fifth of every month, which is the day associated with the god Suiten. Suitengu was completely renovated in 2016.

Those who live in Ginza say that this shrine “is easy to find, but most people won’t even notice it”; it is adjacent to a Japanese restaurant called Yasukō (やす幸), found on Suzurandōri avenue in Ginza 7-chōme.

Tokyo Metro Ginza Line: Asakusa-Tawaramachi-Inaricho-Ueno. JAN 2016
Filmed in January 2016. This is riding a new 1000 series metro train built in 2014, based on the original 1000 series metro trains in the Tokyo metro, which had been in use between 1927-1968 (The new 1000 series metro trains have been introduced since 2012, scheduled to replace all the 01 series metro trains from 1983-1987, 1990-93 and 1997). This is riding the 2,2km long extension with 4 stations, which originally opened back in 1927 (Asakusa-Ueno).
The Ginza Line was conceived by a businessman named Noritsugu Hayakawa, who visited London in 1914, saw the London Underground and concluded that Tokyo needed its own underground railway. He founded the Tokyo Underground Railway (東京地下鉄道 Tōkyō Chika Tetsudō?) in 1920, and began construction in 1925.
The portion between Ueno and Asakusa was completed on December 30, 1927 and publicized as the first underground railway in the Orient. Upon its opening, the line was so popular that passengers often had to wait more than two hours to ride a train for a five-minute trip.
On January 1, 1930, the subway was extended by 1.7 km to temporary Manseibashi Station, abandoned on November 21, 1931 when the subway reached Kanda, 500 meters further south down the line. The Great Depression slowed down construction, but the line finally reached its originally planned terminus of Shinbashi on June 21, 1934.
In 1938, the Tōkyō Rapid Railway (東京高速鉄道 Tōkyō Kōsoku Tetsudō?), a company tied to the predecessor of today's Tokyu Corporation, began service between Shibuya and Toranomon, later extended to Shinbashi in 1939. The two lines began through-service interoperation in 1939 and were formally merged as the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan Subway or TRTA) in July 1941.
The Ginza Line name was applied in 1953 to distinguish the line from the new Marunouchi Line. In the postwar economic boom, the Ginza Line became increasingly crowded. The new Hanzōmon Line began to relieve the Ginza Line's traffic in the 1980s, but the Ginza Line is still quite crowded as it serves major residential, commercial, and business districts in central Tokyo. According to a June 2009 Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation survey, the Ginza Line is the seventh most crowded subway line in Tokyo, running at 168% capacity between Akasaka-Mitsuke and Tameike-Sannō stations.
The newest station on the line, Tameike-Sannō Station, opened in 1997 to provide a connection to the newly built Namboku Line. The line is 14,3km long and has 19 stations.

The Tokyo Metro system operates 9 lines, while the Toei Subway system operates 4 lines in Tokyo.

Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:
