Nohkalikai Falls in Cherapunji - Tallest plunge waterfall in India
Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India with a height of 1100 feet located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water.
Cherapunji also called Sohra, Cherrapunjee and Charrapunji, is a town in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is credited as being the wettest place on Earth. However, nearby Mawsynram has more rainfall nowadays, and both are surpassed by Lloró, Colombia. Today, climatic changes have edged Cherrapunji out of the topmost 'wet' slot, but it still retains its pristine beauty, its unusual facets, the perpetual clouds, and the perpetual mists. Appropriately, Cherrapunji lies in the heart of the State of Meghalaya-the abode of clouds. It is the traditional capital of a hima which is a Khasi tribal chieftainship constituting a petty state known as Sohra or Churra. High above misty valleys and foaming rivers, ensconced in swirling clouds and perched on an escarpment, lies Cherrapunji (4,500 feet).
Cherrapunji receives rains from the Bay of Bengal arm of the Indian summer monsoon. The monsoon clouds fly unhindered over the plains of Bangladesh for about 400 km. Thereafter, they hit the Khasi Hills which rise abruptly from the plains to a height of about 1370 m above mean sea level within 2 to 5 km. The winds push the rain clouds through these gorges and up the steep slopes. The rapid ascent of the clouds into the upper atmosphere hastens the cooling and helps vapours to condense. Most of Cherrapunji's rain is the result of air being lifted as a large body of water vapour. The extreme amount of rainfall at Cherrapunji is perhaps the best-known feature of orographic rain in northeast India.
The home of enterprising Khasi clans, Cherrapunji's place in the Guinness Book of Records is not its only claim to fame. Along with falls lesser in height but no less alluring, the spectacular, cascading 1,035-ft-high Mawsmai Falls-the fourth highest in India-lie just a few kilometers beyond Cherrapunji. Close by is situated a fascinating labyrinth of underground passages beneath age-old caves-a veritable dream for amateur explorers. Elsewhere around Cherrapunji, Khasi monoliths (stones in memory of their ancestors) lie dotted around-a vague reminder of the forests of Bastar. Cherrapunji has several comfortable private hotels. Staying at the Circuit House and the Dak Bungalow require prior permission from the administration. Cherrapunji is 58 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. A steep motorable road, almost perpetually bathed in mist as it climbs upwards on the last lap, leads up to Cherrapunji. Buses and taxis ply to Cherrapunji from Shillong.

Trek to Nohkalikai Falls - Meghalaya | Tallest Waterfall in India | GoPro HD
So it was just another morning in cherrapunji, roaming around seven sisters fall and then we saw an ice-cream shop and decided to take a break. The ice-cream vender told us that you guys can go for a trek to Nohkalikai Fall,it is the tallest waterfall in India. We liked the name and got a cab to the fall and when we reached the fall we saw there was a view point from where everybody was enjoying the view but something was not right we were not here for this. So i decided to search a way to get to the fall. And then we found a staircase that can lead us to the bottom of the fall but those stairs ended up halfway and people saying that this way is going no where but we continued our trek and after 2-3 river crossings and hard trek though the dense forest Yess We reached the Giantt Nohkalikai Falls. It was amazing and was a different feeling to get there.
Thankyou

Nohkalikai Falls in Cherrapunji - Tallest plunge waterfall in India
Nohkalikai Waterfalls is around 5 km from Cherrapunjee and is the fourth highest waterfall in the world. Falling from a height of 1,100 ft, this fall is a great attraction of Cherrapunjee. The drive to Nohkalikai Falls is through the elevated tableland that leads to the cliff and then hike a short distance to a viewpoint from where you can witness the enchanting sight of the beautiful Nohkalikai waterfall plunging down into an ultramarine pool many hundred feet below.
The ideal time to visit Nohkalikai is during the monsoon season, when the falls are at its most spectacular. A viewing gallery allows the visitor to savour the beauty of the place. There are stairs, which take tourist down to various other viewing points.
This fall has a sad legend associated with it. Noh Ka Likai means the leap of Likai. As per the legend, a young woman named Ka Likai, who had a daughter from her earlier marriage remarried. Her new husband loathed his step daughter as he was not in favour of girl staying with them. Out of jealousy, he decides to kill her. When Ka Likai was away working, he slaughters the girl and uses her flesh to cook a meal. After returning home from work, Likai was surprised that her husband had prepared evening meal for her. She ate the meal without suspicion and had no inkling about the gory act her husband had conducted. However, she later discovered her daughter’s fingers in the betel nut basket. Distraught with grief and remorse, she rushed to the nearby cliffs and threw herself over the precipice adjoining the waterfalls. The fall has ever since been known as Nohlakikai.

On the 2nd day we explored cherrapunji/Sohra which is one of the most beautiful part of Meghalaya. It is known for its massive water falls such as Nohkalikai, Wah-kaba, Seven sister, Kynrem, Rainbow falls etc. It was winter so most of them were dry so we had to choose locations with out the water falls. We selected Mawphlang Sacred Forest and Nohkalikai because probably it is the only water fall to hold water in this season.Got wakaba falls as a bonus on the way to Nohkalikai.
Taxi fare for all the spots: 2500 rupee
Zero liter Zip lining cost: 500 rupee for 2 line and 300 rupee for single line.

The legend of Nohkalikai
According to legends, in a village called Rangjyrteh, upstream from Nohkalikai Falls, a woman named Likai resided but had to remarry after her husband died. Ka Likai (Ka is the prefix given for the female gender in Khasi) was left with her infant girl with no means of income. So she had to become a porter herself. Her work required her to leave her daughter unattended for long intervals but when she would be at home she would spend most of her time taking care of her infant. Ka Likai, who married a second time, couldn’t pay attention to her second husband. The jealous husband killed the infant and cooked her meat after throwing away her head and bones. When Ka Likai returned home, she saw nobody in the house but except for a meal that had been prepared. She wanted to go look for her daughter but she ate the meat as she was tired from work.
Ka Likai usually had a betel leaf after her meals but she found a severed finger near the place where she usually cut betel nuts and betel leaves. Ka Likai realized what had happened in her absence and went mad with anger and grief and started running as she swung a hatchet in her hand. She ran off the edge of the plateau and the waterfall where she jumped from was named Nohkalikai Falls after her.
The Nohkalikai Falls | Cherrapunji | Meghalaya | Northeast India | Trekking
A 30 mins trek taken towards the edge of 'The Nohkalikai Falls,'
Falling from a height of 1,115 ft the Nohkalikai Falls have the tallest plunge in India. Located in Cherrapunji, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya in one of the wettest places on earth. The name Nohkalikai can be translated from Khasi to ‘Jump of Ka Likai’ The fall of the 'Ka Likai' Ka likai is the name of a mother who lives upstream from the falls, in a village called Rangjyrteh. Having lost her husband life was difficult for the poor lady. Likai married the second time to sustained the livelihood of her daughter and herself, but her husband didn’t approve or like the attention that the daughter gets from her mother, his wife. The husband felt jealous, and this is where the story takes a gruesome turn. He killed the girl and cooked her meat, while Likai's returned home from work found the meat and ate it without any knowledge that it was her daughter's meat. When she settled at the place where she sliced betel nuts after food, Likai saw a tiny finger she recognised. Putting together what just happened, Likai was horrified with what she had done. Driven by anger and sorrow, Likai ran to the edge of the waterfall and threw herself off the cliff.
Hence, The Falls came to be known as 'Ka Nohkalikai Falls.'
