Mexico is Magic, the small village of Coba, in the Mayan jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula, one hour into the jungle from the Mayan coastal location of the mighty, Tulum. This is one of the tallest Mayan Structures built on the Yucatan Peninsula. The village of Coba was built in the very early AD years. Maybe 1 AD. And you are allowed to climb it to the peak. What a blast.

In this video I recorded my climb to the Top of the Pyramid. Along with views from the top of the Pyramid and my climb back down. Beautiful Mayan music playing in the background.
Proposal on top of Nohoch-Mul Pyramid, Coba Mayan Village in Tulum, Mexico [Drone]
Surprising a girl is never an easy thing to do. Convincing her that you want to fly a drone after passing 5 or 6 large signs that say ‘No Drone’ (while in Mexico) increases the difficulty. Oh, and btw we will be hiking up the tallest Mayan pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula and the second tallest Mayan pyramid in the world. No Sweat. Actually, lots and lots of sweat. Like non-stop sweating.
I’m lucky.
I’m lucky that Christine and I like to take photos and video during our trips so bringing a backpack full of equipment doesn’t sound any alarms.
I’m lucky that a complete stranger took photo after photo of us during this special moment… and they were actually in focus! ????
I’m lucky that I met such a wonderful woman and being with her has been the greatest adventure of my life.
I’m lucky that she said YES.

Discover the Mayan Ruins of Coba, visit a Mayan village, rappel and swim in hidden caves in the jungle
This experience is a chance to combine rich cultural moments with incredible adventures.
In this case your guide is a promoter that is a pioneer in ecotourism and sustainable development and has greatly helped the Mayan communities.
You will start the day off by visiting a secluded Mayan village located amongst natural lagoons, cenotes, and jungle. Here you will rappel down these beautiful cenotes and soar across the jungle canopy via zip lines. Afterwards you will be able to enjoy swimming in hidden caves and walking through the jungle with a professional guide who will teach you about the natural fauna. After enjoying all of these incredible experiences you will be served an authentic meal made of hand made tortillas and traditional food from the region.
The second stop will take you to visit the ancient Mayan pyramids of Coba which is one of the worlds most impressive archeological sites. Because only a portion of the ruins have been uncovered it gives the pyramids a great undiscovered feeling. At the ruins you can climb to the top of the Nohoch Muul pyramid which is the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula and offers stunning views of the jungle. Another very interesting attraction at Coba are the Mayan Stelae and the Mayan Calendar which showed the end of the world in 2012.
This incredibly unique day offers a little bit of everything including adventure, culture and nature and is not to be missed.

COBA TOUR - Riviera Maya Part 1 (cc)
Coba was the second largest city of the Mayan Civilization. The site has 6500 buildings, only 5% have been excavated to date. This is our Coba tour with our guide Mario teaching us of this amazing archeological site. Highly recommended tour to learn about the History of the Mayan People.
We visited the Coba Group, walked 1 km to the Painted Group, then 1 km to the Nohoch Mul Temple seeing sac-be roads and stellas(there are 44 that have been found).

Travel Guide to Cancun/Yucatan
In this Cancun travel guide, I travel around Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula, including taking a boat to Isla Mujeres (the small island just off the coast of Cancun) for some snorkeling, visiting the market at Parque Palapas in downtown Cancun for some tasty snacks, and exploring Coba, the former Mayan city, which is home to the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest temple in the region that you're allowed to climb.

MAYAN RUINS of COBA
#MayanRuins #Coba #QuintanaRoo #Yucatan #Mexico
This is a slide-show of one of our stops on the whole-day photography tour with Bushman Photography. The highlights were seeing all of the ruins, getting a detailed history of the ancient city, and f course the climb to the top of the pyramid!
Coba is 27 miles northwest of Tulum and was an important crossroads to several other Mayan villages. It was populated and built in the years of 600 to 900 AD. It is built next to two lakes and contains several large pyramids. The area is surrounded by a jungle-like environment and if not maintained would be overgrown by the jungle in just a couple years!
Mayan Sacrifices
The Mayans of that time were known to be brutal to their enemies and even to their own people! Human sacrifices were common to appease their rain gods, their crop gods and untold other gods. One of the past-times of the town would be to watch two teams play a combination of a basketball and soccer game. Two teams of three players would try to get a small rubber ball through the hoops using only their shoulders, arms, or legs.
So how was the winning team rewarded - gold? Silver? No, they were sacrificed to the gods because they were the best! I certainly would not want to be on the winning team!
Nohoch Mul Pyramid
The Nohoch Mul Pyramid of Coba is one of the few pyramids you can still climb in Mexico. It is 137 feet tall or 42 meters and has 120 steps to the top. I climbed to the top and was rewarded with views of the rest of Coba, the nearby lakes, and miles and miles of trees! It was well worth the effort to climb to the top.
The roads of Coba start from Nohoch Mul Pyramid and go in all directions to the other Mayan villages of the area. Remnants of the roads can still be found.
Exploring the Ruins
We got to explore the whole grounds of Coba – the playing area of the game the warriors played, several pyramids of differing sizes, tunnels between buildings, and stone tablets with Mayan writings. Some of the Mayan alphabet still has not been decoded. Large parts of Coba is still unexcavated and when that is done who knows what new treasures will be found?
Conclusion
Visiting the Mayan Ruins of Coba was an incredible journey that makes you think about what life was like over 1,000 years ago in this region. It also gives you a rich appreciation of what the people of that time could accomplish just by viewing the remaining structures.
We will see YOU on the next adventure!
