The Day!
In homes and parks throughout the Alvin ISD community, Alvin ISD students, decked out in bright yellow shirts, broke a sweat painting, washing cars, mulching and cleaning in hopes of giving back to their community.
“The Day”, a community service project, had thousands of Alvin ISD students and employees completing over 280 service projects throughout the area.
The event, in its inaugural year, began at 8:00 am on September 8 at each of the 31 campuses in the district.
The idea of ‘The Day’ was born in May, 2018, Alvin ISD Superintendent Buck Gilcrease said. I was thinking back on the school year and the impact that Hurricane Harvey had on our families and community. In the days, weeks, and months that followed the storm, the individuals that make up Alvin ISD, both our students and staff, provided tremendous service to our broader community. I thought, if our district could step up like that with no budgets, no logistical plans, and no administrative directive, what can they do with time to plan!”
“I think ‘The Day’ is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and not have to wait for a bad situation like Hurricane Harvey before we all help each other out,” said Alvin High School Senior and “The Day” student leader Ariana Hanlon.
So, on Saturday morning, students and staff grabbed rakes, gloves, and shovels, departing from their campuses to the locations they would be serving.
“Teams at each of our campuses worked to identify opportunities to serve.
The service projects certainly looked different at the elementary and secondary levels, but the student’s level of service and commitment was just the same,” said Daniel Combs, Alvin ISD’s “The Day” Coordinator.
For instance, at the Manvel Police Department, Manvel Junior High students cleaned, and spread new mulch on an onsite playground, while 2ndgrade students at Hasse Elementary made and delivered positive Post-It notes to community members at the Post Office.
“The particular job doesn’t matter. It’s more about expressing gratitude to the community that gives us so much, and even more so, it is about instilling a heart to serve in our students,” said Gilcrease.
Not only did students and staff embrace this opportunity to serve, the parents of the District were involved as well.
“It was such as amazing sight to see. Students and parents filled our cafeteria as we made dog toys for dogs in animal shelters, cards for our officers that help us every day, rocks of kindness to put around the neighborhood and activity bags for kids that are in the hospital. Our students and parents were so excited to be giving back during the awesome day of service,” said Pomona Elementary Principal, Renae Rives.
“The Day” is a project that will become an annual event hosted on the second Saturday in September.
The Day is much more than just a one-day event, Gilcrease said. It represents a much bigger movement. I think it truly represents what it means to be a part of Alvin ISD, to give of yourself, to do the little things and to truly change the world through acts of service.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.The Astros were established as the Houston Colt .45s and entered the National League as an expansion team in 1962 along with the New York Mets. The current name—reflecting Houston's role as the control center of the U.S. crewed space program—was adopted three years later, when they moved into the Astrodome, the first domed sports stadium.
The Astros played in the NL from 1962 to 2012, first in the West Division from 1969 to 1993, followed by the Central Division from 1994 to 2012. The team was reclassified to the American League West from 2013 onward. While a member of the NL, the Astros played in one World Series in 2005, losing in four games to the Chicago White Sox. In 2017, they became the first franchise in MLB history to have won a pennant in both the NL and the AL, when they defeated the New York Yankees in the ALCS. They won the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning four games to three, earning the team, and the state of Texas, its first World Series title.

2011 Major League Baseball season
The 2011 Major League Baseball season began on Thursday, March 31, and ended on Wednesday, September 28. This marked the first time a season began on a Thursday since 1976, and the first time a regular season ended on a Wednesday since 1990. The 82nd edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 12 with the National League defeating the American League for the second straight year, by a score of 5–1. As has been the case since 2003, the league winning that game has home field advantage in the World Series. Accordingly, the 2011 World Series began on October 19, and ended on October 28, with the St. Louis Cardinals winning in seven games over the Texas Rangers.
Only two teams were unable to complete the entire 162-game regular season schedule, as the make-up game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on September 8 was cancelled due to rain and was decided not to make up any further, owing to scheduling constraints and the game inconsequential to the playoffs.
