In the controversial new show, which Scarlett has had to defend following backlash against the show’s concept, the former Queen of the I’m A Celebrity jungle and her family relocated with an exact replica of their home to Namibia. There, in the middle of a Namibian tribal village, Scarlett and her family lived alongside the local Himba tribe, seeing their two very different livelihoods contrasted in real time. Where is Namibia, where The British Tribe Next Door is set? For the show, the Moffatts relocated from County Durham to Namibia, with their semi-detached house (or at least, a replica of) in tow. The four part series was filmed in the Republic of Namibia, which is located in southern Africa. Namibia, which is one of the world’s least densely populated countries due to the Namib Desert which stretches along much of the country, borders the Atlantic Ocean to its west and shares land borders with Zambia, Angola, South Africa and Botswana. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Who are the Himba tribe? Scarlett and her family lived with the nomadic Himba tribe for a month. The Himba tribe are the indigenous people of Namibia and their population of roughly 50,000 people live largely in the northern part of the country. The Himba people speak a language called OtjiHimba and a predominantly livestock farmers, counting their personal wealth by the number of cattle they own. Successful in maintaining their culture and traditional life despite the increasing modernity of Namibia as a country, The Himba are considered the last (semi-) nomadic people of Namibia. On the advice of anthropologists, the house which was built in Namibia for the show was completely removed after filming and is currently being reused in South Africa where it was built. Talking on This Morning today, Scarlett revealed that having spent a month living with the Himba tribe but in a replica of their own home, the community were adamant that the Moffatts leave nothing behind when they left. ‘I just assumed, maybe because I’m big-headed, that they would just love our house….instead they found us very isolated,’ Scarlett revealed. The British Tribe Next Door airs tonight, Tuesday 22 October, at 9.15pm on Channel 4.

In Search of the Desert Elephants of Damaraland, Namibia.
From the excellent Rustig Toko Lodge, where we were staying, in Kamanjab, northern Namibia we traveled west, on dirt roads, through the Grootberg pass, to Palmwag, and then north to Kwowarib and the Hoanib River. From here the adventure really began, we left the roads behind and entered the dried river bed of the Hoanib and then the Ombende River. For 5 hours we drove along the river bed until we finally found the elusive desert elephants. I had never done anything remotely like this before and would recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure, a love of vast unspoiled open spaces, and a desire to see wildlife in its natural environment outside the game reserve.
Our Guide for the trip, Hindie van Rensburg, is the owner of the Rustig Toko Lodge in Kamanjab. Thanks Hindie for an excellent experience!

Round trip (Ai-Ais, Fish River Canyon, Quiver Tree Forest, Giants Playground)
The Fish River Canyon is located in the far south of Namibia. It is the largest canyon in Africa. It features a gigantic ravine, about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep. The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia. Local legend has it that the snaking canyon was created by the whiplash of a dragon’s tail. It takes you through 1.5 billion years of geological history.
The natural hot-spring oasis is situated at the base of the mountain peaks (extremely arid area) at the southern end of Fish River Canyon. Ai-Ais means 'burning water' in the local Nama dialect, refers to the sulphurous hot springs which are found in this area in 1850 by a nomadic Nama. The thermal water has an average temperature of about 60 °C and rich in sulphur, chloride and fluoride.
Giant’s Playground. it is a geological phenomenon. The giant's playground is a place where huge dolorite boulders seemed to have been place in piles as if giant toddler played lego with them. The unique rock formations were caused by the erosion of underling sedimentary rock sometime around 180 million years ago. The dolorites at the quiver tree forest and giant's playground form part of the bigger sill complex. The dolorites are magma that was pressed up, but cooled off just below the earth's surface. The softer parts of the stone and the top layer of the earht's crust erodated away, which left the dolorites exposed. The dolorites are between 160 and 180 million year old, and in the Keetmanshoop region cover an area of 180 000 km2. Dolortes dykes are usually between 3-10 meters in width and can run from a few hundred metres to more than 20 km in lenght.
The Quiver tree forest is spontaneous. It is an aloe plant which botanical name is aloe dichotoma. Also called Quiver trees because bushmen use its branches to make quivers. The tallest quiver trees are two to three centuries old. These unusual-looking trees can reach heights anywhere between three and nine metres and only bloom once they are between 20 and 30 years old. The Quiver tree is also known for looking like its upside down because the leaves look somewhat similar to roots. This tree has a long history of beliefs that it will bring good luck to anybody that worships a tree and nurtures it. The forest is home to the rock hyraxes living among rocks. The closest living relatives to hyraxes are the modern-day elephants and sirenians.
