Uyuni Salt Flats 3 Days/2 Nights Tour, Salar de Uyuni
Salar de Uyuni, 2017 Oct.
We took a bus from La Paz to Uyuni. Arrived very early in the morning, but local businesses were already open for tourists.
We've shopped around and chosen Empexsa Expediciones company. We've been very lucky to get Alejandro as a driver. He's been extremely friendly and helpful. Even though the tour was in Spanish, we still could understand some of the stories he was telling about the Salt Flats as he spoke slow and was very articulate.
P.S. Alejandro has tamed a wild culpeo (Andean) fox that you can see in the video and knows a lot about Quinoa ????
We also got to see Viscachas or Vizcachas some sort of rabbit look like cuties. What's more, we've seen a lot of flamingos in Laguna Colorada and Laguna Hedionda where views were amazing but the smell was very peculiar due to sulfur content. Moreover, we sighted wild llamas and alpacas wandering around deserts and lakeshores.
In those 3 days we've been swept away by mesmerizing views and experiences. Would love to do it again in the rainy season to see salt flats mirror effect.
At the end of the tour, Alejandro drove us to the Bolivia - Chile border marked by a flag and some small shed standing where all of us had to go inside one by one and pay some bribe money to some fat ass custom officer to get a Bolivia exit stamp.
Then in the freezing windy weather, we've waited for a bus to take us to San Pedro de Atacama. Wasn't a pleasant experience but we survived.

WORLD'S BIGGEST MIRROR | Salar De Uyuni
WORLD'S BIGGEST MIRROR:
Salar de Uyuni (or Salar de Tunupa)is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 sq mi).It is in the Daniel Campos Province in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above sea level.
Salar de Uyuni is part of the Altiplano of Bolivia in South America. The Altiplano is a high plateau, which was formed during uplift of the Andes mountains. The plateau includes fresh and saltwater lakes as well as salt flats and is surrounded by mountains with no drainage outlets.Salar is salt flat in Spanish. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen; Uyuni is a surname and the name of a town that serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar. Thus Salar de Uyuni can be loosely translated as a salt flat with enclosures, the latter possibly referring to the islands of the Salar; or as salt-flat at Uyuni (the town named 'pen for animals').
Aymara legend tells that the mountains Tunupa, Kusku, and Kusina, which surround the Salar, were giant people. Tunupa married Kusku, but Kusku ran away from her with Kusina. Grieving Tunupa started to cry while breastfeeding her son. Her tears mixed with milk and formed the Salar. Many locals consider the Tunupa an important deity and say that the place should be called Salar de Tunupa rather than Salar de Uyuni.
The Salar is virtually devoid of any wildlife or vegetation. The latter is dominated by giant cacti (Echinopsis). They grow at a rate of about 1 cm/a to a height of about 12 m. Other shrubs include Pilaya, which is used by locals to cure catarrh, and Thola which is burned as a fuel. Also present are quinoa plants and queñua bushes.
Every November, Salar de Uyuni is the breeding ground for three species of pink South American flamingo: the Chilean, Andean, and rare James's flamingos, their color presumably originating from feeding on pink algae. About 80 other bird species are present, including the horned coot, Andean goose, and Andean hillstar. The Andean fox, or culpeo, is also present, and islands in the Salar host colonies of rabbit-like viscachas.
