Thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, to those brave men - 'the few', for giving me the freedom that I enjoy and take for granted today. I am, and always will be forever in your debt.

Battle for Mosul - British Army: Behind the Frontlines (Season1 Episode 1) Forth News
British Army: Behind the Frontlines - The Battle for Mosul (S1 E1):-
A look at the heart of the British army. The army goes to Iraq, where they have a bloody history - 179 British soldiers were killed here between 2003 and 2011.When fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria swept across Iraq in the summer of 2014, the largest prize they claimed was the city of Mosul. The jihadists forced the Iraqi military and a large portion of the city’s population and people to flee. With roughly 600K residents remaining, Mosul is the largest population center under ISIS control, a key source of prestige and resources and a living advertisement for the group’s claim that it is building a state.
In March, the Iraqi government announced the launch of a military operation to retake Mosul, but so far the campaign has only made incremental progress, reclaiming a series of villages with the help of the U.S. led military coalition against ISIS. The Iraqi military lacks the troops to launch a full-scale assault on the city, and in late May the government committed troops to a separate campaign to retake Fallujah, another key ISIS-held city that lies closer to Baghdad. Pro-government forces retook the center of Fallujah on June 17. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared on Twitter, “Fallujah has returned to the nation and Mosul is the next battle.”
But Mosul won’t be easy, and it’s not just because of the military challenge. The Mosul campaign is complicated by a political stalemate within Iraq. The military is expected to rely on powerful Kurdish militias to help pave the to Mosul, but the semi-autonomous Kurdish government in northern Iraq has yet to commit to the operation, claiming they are not properly equipped for an attack on the city. In Fallujah and other battles, the government has relied on Shi’ite-majority militias called “hashd al-shabi,” or popular mobilization forces. Prime Minister Abadi said in February that the militias would join the battle for Mosul, but to date none of them have been sent to the front lines approaching the city. Rights groups have accused some of those groups of of war crimes, and critics say that sending the militias into a Sunni-majority city like Mosul could cause further sectarian violence.
While the battle for Mosul has yet to begin in earnest, members of the Iraqi military, Kurdish militias, and the U.S. military are already fighting and dying in the battle against ISIS. Iraqi civilians are fleeing by the thousands, and hundreds of thousands of others remain trapped under ISIS rule. The jihadists continue to counterattack the opposing forces, harassing the troops holding the front lines.

UK election 2015 neck and neck: Cameron, Miliband, Clegg, Sturgeon, Farage battle to break deadlock
Britain's parliamentary election takes place this Thursday, May 7, and, according to the latest polls, no party look set to win by an outright majority.
Reuters reports that Prime Minister David Cameron's ruling Conservatives and Ed Miliband's opposition Labour Party are currently tied at 33 percent in the latest YouGov opinion poll.
Another survey by Populus shows that support for the United Kingdom Independence Party party fell two points to 13 percent, while the Liberal Democrats, the junior partner in the current Conservative-led coalition government, were up one point to 10 percent. In this poll, the two main parties were tied at 34 percent.
Labour and the Conservatives are neck and neck, though none are expected to win by the required majority of 325 seats, meaning another hung parliament is expected.
Both parties are then expected to negotiate with other parties to form a coalition government or for voting support.
Thursday's election is expected to be closest in decades.

Battle Of Britain 1940 - Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt BF-109 Breakdown
Purchase this artwork:
None of the Allied airmen in the Battle of Britain wanted to fly with Czech pilot Sgt. Josef Frantisek DFM. Simply put, he was a renegade who “fought his own war” and was a danger to anyone flying in his formation.
Because of this, the RAF and No. 303 Polish Squadron only allowed him to fly as a “guest” in a “spare” Hawker Hurricane.
In this composition, Sgt. Frantisek had already left his colleagues shortly after takeoff and was on a solo mission to make his first kill of the war near the coast of Dover: a Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 piloted by Lt. Detlev Rohwer. The German plane escaped the attack, but eventually crash-landed in the English Channel. Later in the day, Sgt. Frantisek would get his first actual kill—a different pilot in the same model plane, a Bf 109.
In the following five weeks, Sgt. Frantisek would add 16 more German planes to his kill list, making him one of the top aces of the Battle of Britain.
His streak came to a tragic end on 8 October 1940 when he crashed during landing in Ewell, Surrey. Legend has it that he was trying to impress his girlfriend with an acrobatic approach when it happened. True or not, it’s true to his story—the story of a man who lived like a tempest and died in a Hurricane.

British EM-2: The Best Cold War Battle Rifle that Never Was
Armament Research Services (ARES) is a specialist technical intelligence consultancy, offering expertise and analysis to a range of government and non-government entities in the arms and munitions field. For detailed photos of the guns in this video, don't miss the ARES companion blog post:
The EM-2 was the rifle that the British pushed for NATO trials in 1950. It was a rifle well ahead of its time in several areas - as a select-fire bullpup rifle, it was intended to replace both the infantry rifle and the submachine gun. Its .280 caliber cartridge was designed with combat ranges of 600 yards and less, acknowledging the reality that engagements beyond even 300 yards were extremely rare, and not important enough to base rifle design on. It was also designed to use primarily optical sights, long before this concept would be embraced elsewhere. Unfortunately, the potential of the EM-2 was lost to the political decision that compatibility with American ordnance choices was a more significant benefit than an improved infantry rifle.
Mechanically, the EM-2 is heavily based on the German G43 flapper-locking system. It uses a long stroke gas piston in place of the G43's short stroke one, though. To help account for the slower handling of a bullpup configuration, the EM-2 would both lock open when its magazine was empty and also automatically close the bolt and chamber a round when a fresh magazine was inserted. The safety was much like that of the M1 Garand, and the selector lever was of the push-through type like on the German Sturmgewehr.
The optic on the EM-2 is quite tiny, and offers no magnification. Its purpose is to reduce the two-element sight picture of traditional iron sights to a single plane that can be more quickly and easily placed on the target.
In total, only 55 EM-2 rifles were manufactured, including the paratrooper model in this video and a number of 7.62mm NATO examples made as a last ditch effort to remain competitive in NATO trials. Where most failed prototype rifles were rejected for very legitimate technical shortcomings, the EM-2 is (I believe) a prime example of an outstanding weapon that fell victim to politics unrelated to its actually qualities.
