Nederland PROVINCIE NOORDHOLLAND PROMOTIEFILM 4 MINUTEN
Zaanstad cycling tour (Netherlands)
Zaanstad is the official name of a municipality in the Zaan-river region in North-Holland province. Since 1974 seven villages and one town form one 'city'.
The local branch of the Cyclists' Union invited me and a number of traffic experts to come and have a look. On a 'cycle safari' we went to see what is very good and what could be improved with regard to cycling and the infrastructure in Zaanstad Municipality.

Summary of Amsterdam:
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.
Amsterdam-Rhine Canal:
Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, Dutch Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, Dutch waterway connecting the port of Amsterdam with the Rhine River. From Amsterdam the canal passes to the southeast through Utrecht on its way to the Waal River near Tiel. Inaugurated in 1952, the canal has a total length of 72 km (45 miles) and contains four locks. It was enlarged in the 1970s and reopened in 1981. It is the most heavily used canal in western Europe and can handle up to four 3,000-ton lighters (unpowered barges) tied together and push-towed by a tug. The canal’s minimum depth is 5.5 metres (18 feet).
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

Kinderdijk is a village in the Netherlands, belonging to the municipality of Molenwaard, in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. Kinderdijk is situated in a polder in the Alblasserwaard at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

July 25-26, 2019. We set course from the Port Zelande into Bruinisse & the day after into Herkingen. The weather was super warm: 40 degree Celsius! We met with grandma
& grandpa's boat & the Meijer family.
One of the smaller villages on Goeree-Overflakkee, Herkingen swells to XL in the summer season with water sport lovers. First though, there was Oud-Herkingen but the waves swept it away in 1511. Today’s Herkingen came later, again under the influence of water. Stubbornly staying in the flooded polders, it forced locals to move to drier spots, and other sources of income. Salvation, a tad briny, was found in cultivating oysters, mussels and winkles (‘krukels’). Don’t confuse the latter with the Dutch ‘winkel’, which we also have a lot of: shops.
Grevelingen or Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) is a closed off part of the Rhine-Meuse estuary on the border of the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. It is situated between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland) and Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland) and was closed off as part of the Delta Works,
a huge engineering project designed to protect the southwestern part of the Netherlands from flooding. The Brouwersdam, a dike connecting the two islands on the west, closes off the Grevelingen from the North Sea. The Grevelingendam, the dike on the east, blocks the inflow of Rhine and Meuse water.
Since its closure in 1971 the saltwater of the Grevelingen slowly started to become brackish due to rainwater and excess polderwater from the islands, but the Dutch changed
their mind and decided that they wanted to preserve the saline biotope. Therefore, in 1978 a sluice was created under the Brouwersdam, restoring and maintaining the saline
character of the Grevelingen. The Brouwerssluis is open all year round except during storm floods.

July 27-28, 2019. We set sails from Herkingen into Oude Tonge, & the day after, into Numansdorp. It is a long wait in the Bruinissesluis, Krammersluizen & Volkeraksluizen. It is a wet day.
Where is Oude Tonge? It lies in the Volkerak lake. Tourism has been the most recent lick of paint on this ancient locale – especially for water sport lunatics. But it goes back many thousands of moons. Together with Nieuwe-Tonge, it formed the old manor estate of Grijsoord. In a 1284 property deal, the Viscount of Zeeland, Albrecht van Voorne, purchased Grijsoord from Count Floris V. Its mudflats and reedy marshes were a summer sheep pasture and inhabited by shepherds, fisher folk and bird catchers. In the winter, salt was harvested by removing accumulations in the peat layer below the clay surface of a salt marsh (aka salting). This, and simpler scraping, was unsustainable – the custom (known in Dutch as ‘selneren’) faded away. After the area was diked in, nearby creeks silted up. The new polders soon welcomed crops and animals. The fertile clay soil was a great growth medium for cereals, flax, common madder (a dye plant), peas and beans.
Originally, the village was the Kerkring, with functionally named streets: Kaai (quay), Oostdijk (East Dike), Molendijk (Mill Dike) and Voorstraat (Main Street). Little more is known since the village archives were destroyed in 1647 in a fire that razed most of Oude-Tonge.
Catastrophe returned in 1953: the flood disaster hit Oude-Tonge the heaviest in Goeree-Overflakkee: 305 villagers lost their lives. They lie in a mass grave in a dike just outside the village.
Today, Oude-Tonge has morphed into a tourist destination. Its small harbour draws water sport fans from all over Goeree-Overflakkee. Many of the island’s cycle paths will lead you here.
Numandsdorp lies in Hollands Diep river.
Hollands Diep is a wide river in the Netherlands and an estuary of the Rhine and Meuse river. Through the Scheldt-Rhine Canal it connects to the Scheldt river and Antwerp. The Bergse Maas river and the Nieuwe Merwede river join near Lage Zwaluwe to form the Hollands Diep.

July 22-23, 2019. We set course from the Archipel islands into Oudorp. It is a beautiful weather, and busy with boats sailing to the West of the Grevelingenmeer.
Grevelingen or Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) is a closed off part of the Rhine-Meuse estuary on the border of the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Zeeland.
It is situated between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland) and Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland) and was closed off as part of the Delta Works, a huge engineering project designed to protect the southwestern part of the Netherlands from flooding. character of the Grevelingen. The Brouwerssluis is open all year round except during storm floods.
On the western forehead of Goeree-Overflakkee, jutting firmly into the North Sea, Ouddorp has kept its essentially rural character.
It’s quite a charmer, 4 km long, where fields are uniquely divided by sand walls.
