Tourism Noosa - Fraser Island
The Noosa region is the gateway to the Cooloola Recreation Area and World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, both part of the Great Sandy National Park. It's an area of unspoilt natural beauty, hundreds of kilometres of white beaches, cliffs of coloured sands, lush rainforest and bushland, sand dunes, freshwater lakes and more. Guided day tours and overnight trips are available from Noosa, join a tag-along 4WD camping tour or hire a vehicle and explore the region yourself.
Fraser is the world's largest sand island - a place of exceptional natural beauty with an amazing array of plant life, wildlife and birds throughout the island's 120km length.
Explore the island on foot with the Fraser Island Great Walk -- the entire 90km walk takes 6--8 days, or take it easy with half-day strolls. There are many beautiful beach, bush and lakeside camping areas -- permits are required (derm.qld.gov.au or phone 13 74 68).
The Cooloola Recreation Area with beautiful beaches and inland forests stretches from Noosa North Shore to Rainbow Beach. Camp at Inskip Point (dogs are allowed) where a 10-minute barge trip takes you to Fraser Island. Vehicle access permits are required (see derm.qld.gov.au, phone 13 74 68 or call into the Hastings Street Visitor Information Centre).
The Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve -- more than 874,000ha of land and a marine area of more than 542,000ha -- adjoins the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. It is home to almost 50% of Australia's bird species and about 7500 species of fauna and flora, and has more marine fish diversity than the Great Barrier Reef.
Fraser Island and Cooloola are accessible by 4WD from Noosa via Noosa North Shore as a guided day tip or overnight camping tours. Or hire a 4WD or take your own vehicle (see derm.qld.gov.au, phone 13 74 68 or call into the Hastings Street Visitor Information Centre for vehicle access permits).
Take the car ferry from Tewantin to Noosa North Shore. Fraser Island ferries operate from Inskip Point at Rainbow Beach and from Riverheads at Hervey Bay.
Noosa & Nomads Fraser Island Tours

A day trip up here is a must when your visiting the Sunshine Coast. Get the ferry across to North Shore and hangout on the beach. You can head all the way up to Double island point or just chill on the beach and Noosa River. Great day out!!
Noosa Villages - Noosa North Shore
Across the river from Noosa Heads and Noosaville is Noosa North Shore - a long stretch of white sand, dunes and beautiful coastline, and the gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island and Great Sandy National Park. A quick and convenient car ferry operates 7 days a week from Tewantin to take you to Noosa North Shore which showcases the region's unspoilt nature to perfection.
Find your own spot along the long stretch of beach to relax, or for the more energetic, why not try horse riding, four wheel driving, swimming, fishing and surfing? Refuel at the local family-friendly restaurant.
Go kayaking on the unspoilt Lake Cooroibah or see the wonderful array of native wildlife including kangaroos and birds. Noosa North Shore has various accommodation options, so it's a great day out or a perfect place to chill out longer.
Drive along the beach past Teewah and the Coloured Sands, all the way to Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point.
Take the car ferry from the end of Moorindil Street, Tewantin -- it's a short, 2-minute trip across the river. Some parts of Noosa North Shore are accessible by all vehicles, although 4WD is needed to travel along the beach. Vehicle permits are required to drive along the beach and on some inland tracks.

Win a FREE DJI Osmo Mobile 3!
Here's a quick video from our recent trip to Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia. It's one of my favorite places in the world and figured that this time I would make a short video showing it off. I also threw in some shots of the 4x4 we hired because the folks at rainbow beach 4x4 hire were so nice.
The island is completely sand so you need to have an offroad vehicle for all the 4x4 driving needed. Rainbow Beach 4x4 Hire was really easy to deal with.

Rainbow Beach, Coloured Sands, Double Island Point Lighthouse
Take part in a truly Australian experience. Ride over the sand in a 4 WD, and discover your private, very own, best spot of beach.
Rainbow beach is the starting point for some of the most beautiful sights nature has to offer. Only 240 km from Brisbane (150 miles)
If you don’t have a 4 WD you can hire one or even take a 4 WD tour with one of the most established tour providers on the Cooloola Coast.
See the Coloured Sands. Have a soak in the salt water lagoons at Honeymoon Bay, take a swim in the surf or have a go at one of Queensland’s longest and safest surf breaks.
Hike up to the Double Island Point Lighthouse, and enjoy views over all of Rainbow Beach, out to Fraser Island or look south and see as far as Noosa.
From the base of the lighthouse, look out to sea. There is a good chance you’ll see some interesting sea life, including: dolphins, sharks, sea turtles. From July to November, you may even see some whales.
When it is time to head back to your accommodations you might detour from the beach and point your four wheel drive to the Cooloola Rainforest. Stop at Freshwater Day Use area for a picnic lunch. Read up on the forest at the information board and then head for the forest. All this and it is only 240 km from Brisbane.
Coloured Sands
The Coloured Sand Cliffs gave Rainbow Beach its name. Over 70 different colours make this a must see. These are impressive cliffs that can reach up to 200 metres.
Rainbow Beach was named for its famous coloured sands. The colours come from a combination of iron oxide and leached dye from the area’s vegetation. Australia’s indigenous population used the colour for the sand for painting and decorating their everyday objects.
From the Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club walk down the beach toward Double Island Point. After about 1 ½ km you will see the coloured sands. The coloured sands go on for about 10 or 11 km.
Dreamtime Story of the Coloured Sands
Way back in dream-time, there lived on the banks of the Noosa River a beautiful black maiden called Murrawar. She was in love with the Rainbow. The Rainbow would come to visit her every morning. She would clap her hands and sing to the Rainbow.
Murrawar was taken by Burwilla, a bad man from another tribe. He kept her for his slave wife. He beat her and had her do all his work. Burwilla had a terrible killing boomerang that was bigger than a tree and full of evil spirit.
Murrawar escaped and was running along the beach. Soon she saw the boomerang, it was coming to kill her. She called for help, as she fell to the ground. Suddenly she heard a loud noise and saw the Rainbow racing across the sea, it was coming to save her. The boomerang attacked the Rainbow, and they met with a thunderous crash.
The boomerang was killed instantly while the Rainbow was shattered into many pieces. The Rainbow fell to the beach, to die, and is still on the beach with all its colours.
Surf & Sand Safaris
Established in 1973, Surf & Sand Safaris is one of the longest operating 4WD tour companies in Queensland. Glenn Wiggins and his family have personally owned and operated the business since 2003. They love the area and enjoy sharing it with visitors.
After the first 10 minutes we felt as if we were traveling with friends. They were happy to share tips that will make my next self-drive visit more fun and less frustrating.
A great plus, is to not have to make the 2 km uphill trek to the Lighthouse. I understand that they are the only tour operator with keys to the gate and authorization to drive to the base of the lighthouse. On a hot day that alone is worth the cost of the trip.

Rainbow Beach, Inskip Point and Tin Can Bay, Queensland
This magnificent region north of Queensland's Sunshine Coast really is a hidden paradise.
The beaches are superb and it is the gateway to the iconic Heritage listed Fraser Island, the worlds largest sand island.
From Brisbane it is a one and a half hour drive north to Gympie and then one hour East to the stunning beaches of this region.

Days 17-18 in Australia - Noosa & Fraser Island
We left Brisbane and headed up to Noosa National Park. We were a little bit short of time so we just managed to check Hell’s Gate. We arrived at Fraser Island the next day and checked:
- Lake McKenzie
- Central Station
- Ship Wreck
- The Pinnacles
Even though the weather wasn’t the best we still enjoyed the biggest Sandy island in the world quite a lot. One advice though is to spend more than a day there and if yo can, rent your own 4 wheel.
We were lucky to see a couple of Dingos and also to win some cash playing Keno ;)
