Noosa Villages - Pomona
visitnoosa.com.au
Named after the Roman goddess of fruit and orchards, Pomona is a relaxed country town that is located at the foot of Mt Cooroora.
Pomona was first settled in the late 1880s and, when the railway arrived soon after, became a centre of agriculture. Originally known as Pinbarren siding, the town's name was changed in 1906 to 'Pomona'. Pomona was the administrative centre for Noosa shire from 1910 until 1980.
Today Pomona's history is evident in its heritage streetscapes and well-preserved public buildings.
Things to do
Wander past the art deco buildings along the main street and do a spot of shopping or stop for a coffee break.
Pick up a map at the Pomona Visitor Information Centre and take the Pomona Heritage Walk -- an easy wander past more than 30 of Pomona's historic buildings of interest.
Discover stories and artifacts that reveal the local history at the Noosa Shire Museum. Located in the Old Shire Chambers, the museum displays include photographs of important moments in Pomona's history, a Post Office Exhibit, and a room dedicated to the original inhabitants of the area, the Gubbi Gubbi people.
Pomona is also the home of the Majestic Cinema, the oldest continuously running silent movie cinema in the world. Built as the Majestic Hall in 1921, it was originally used for social and sporting events and silent movies. 'Talkies' were introduced briefly in 1931, but the cinema reverted back to silent movies and today shows The Son of the Sheik, starring Rudolf Valentino, every Thursday at 8.30pm, as well as a hot of other events throughout the year.
Call in at the Old Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery, housed in the original town railway station, where work by local artisans is on display.
Test your fitness in the King of the Mountain race. Each year runners from all over the world flock to Pomona to compete in the popular fun run and test themselves on the slopes of the 438 metre-high Mt Cooroora.
