Norbulingka is dedicated to handing down tradition and restoring standards by providing training, education and employment for Tibetans. It supports an environment in which Tibetan community and family values can flourish. It reconciles the traditional creatively and respectfully with the modern, and seeks to create an international awareness of Tibetan values and their expression in art and literature. Norbulingka produces high quality, traditionally crafted art objects, as well as clothing and home furnishings. Free guided tours of the institute are available to visitors every day except Sunday. Workshop are also offered for those wishing to study Tibetan arts. The institute also runs two guesthouses—Norling Guesthouse and Chonor House. All proceeds from all Norbulingka's projects go directly back into the institute to further our endeavors to preserve Tibetan culture.
Norbulingka's art studios include Tibetan statue making, thangka painting, screen-printing, applique and tailoring, woodcarving, wood painting, papermaking, and wood and metal craft.
The Academy of Tibetan Culture, established in 1997, offers a three-year course of higher education in traditional Tibetan studies, as well as English, Chinese, and world history.
The Research Department of Norbulingka houses the team composing the official biography of the Dalai Lama, of which nine volumes in Tibetan have already been published. The research section is also compiling a comprehensive encyclopedia of Tibetan culture.

Norbulingka Institute ||Dharamshala- Himachal Pradesh|| Museum
Norbulingka is a unique institute dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan arts and culture.
We are a self-sustaining community located in Dharamsala, India, dedicated to ensuring that the integrity of Tibetan artistic traditions is maintained for generations to come. Art is a large part of culture, and by maintaining artistic lineages, we help to conserve the unique identity of Tibetans and the sacred traditions which took root in Tibet. Our studios produce museum-quality artwork using methods that have been practiced and passed down for many centuries. We invite visitors to come and explore our beautiful campus and witness firsthand the splendor of Tibetan art.
Workshops
For those interested, we offer workshops for visitors in thangka sketching, wood carving, wood painting, and appliqué. Each participant will be given their own project to work on under the supervision of an artist. At the end of each workshop, guests will leave with a beautiful product to take home, as well as a deeper appreciation of the sophistication of Tibetan art.
Opening Hours
Norbulingka is open every day from 9-5:30. Our workshops and offices are closed on Sunday and the second Saturday of each month, but our guesthouse, café, temple, museum and shop remain open. The best months to visit are March-May and October-December. Winter is quite mild in Dharamsala, but the monsoon, from July-September can be very wet.
Getting Here
Norbulingka is located in Sidhpur, a suburb of Dharamsala, about 30 minutes from McLeod Ganj.
By Plane: There is an airport located in Gaggal, about 20 minutes from Norbulingka. SpiceJet and Air India run daily services from Delhi to Dharamsala, however, these flights can be unreliable, especially during monsoon season. Alternatively, you can fly to Jammu or Amritsar, both located around 4 hours from Dharamsala.
By Train: The nearest large train station is in Pathankot, located about 2 hours from Dharamsala. Be forewarned however, that booking trains in India can be very complicated as it must be done well in advance and in person. Your best option for train bookings is through a travel agent.
By Bus: Probably the most reliable and cheapest way to reach us is by bus. Several buses run to and from Delhi daily. You can book with a travel agent or online. Volvo buses have heat and a television, as well as almost fully reclining seats. Other buses have comfortable seats, but no have heat or air-conditioning. The journey lasts about 12 hours.
Guided Tour
At the entrance, you will be asked to pay a small fee of 50rs for locals and 110rs for tourists, which goes towards the maintenance of our grounds. From there you can request a free guided tour of Norbulingka and one of our tour guides will show you around to all of our sections, or if you wish, you can take the time to explore by yourself. Visitors will be able to observe Tibetan artisans and their apprentices as they practice the ancient Buddhist art forms of statue-making, thangka painting, thangka applique, as well as the decorative arts of woodcarving, wood painting, tailoring, and weaving.
Temple
At the end of the tour, visitors can pay a visit to our temple, Deden Tsuklagkhang, a magnificent example of Tibetan religious architecture, displaying some of the finest work done by Norbulingka artists, and the perfect place for prayer and reflection. Adorning the walls are thangka frescoes depicting the deeds of the Buddha, the Fourteen Dalai Lamas, and other great Buddhist masters. An applique thangka, over two stories high, hangs from the ceiling, displaying the Buddha and the 16 arhats, the work of dozens of artists and thousands of hours of dedicated labor. The centerpiece of the temple is a 14ft gilded statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, the largest of its kind outside Tibet, lovingly crafted by Norbulingka artists from hand-hammered copper sheets.
Losel Doll Museum
The Losel Doll Museum houses a collection of over 150 dolls dressed in traditional costumes from various regions of Tibet. The costumes, meticulously researched, and made from the same materials as the originals would have been, show the richness and diversity of life on the Tibetan Plateau. They are displayed in stunning dioramas depicting traditional life. The Losel Dolls were created by a group of artist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery, re-established in Southern India, as a project to support their monastery. The monks have now retired or are no more and this project has come to an end, Losel dolls are not made any more. Norbulingka Institute is happy to be house the collection within the campus and have them on display for our visitors, we are one of three places where the whole set of the dolls is on display, with one set in the US and the other in Taiwan.

Backpacking India - Rishikesh Ashram, Mcleodganj Volunteering, Norbulingka Institute, Ep. 19
We arrived in Dehradun and made our way to the Tapovan area of Rishikesh. From here we checked into Maa Yoga ashram for a week long retreat focusing on meditation, pranayama, and yoga. What first seemed a bit unorganized turned into a great experience for us meeting and interacting with people from all over the world who we really got a chance to learn from. A woman from Japan seeking Ayurvedic treatment, a family from southern india, a long term backpacker from Venezuela and his girlfriend from Sweden, an American couple traveling from their home in Mumbai, and an Australian couple looking to improve their yoga were all familiar faces by the end of the week. We had great in depth conversations with these people and spent a full day practicing doing 3 hours of yoga and 3 hours of pranayama daily.
Once we completed the ashram stay we took one of the longest car rides of our lives through Himachal Pradesh. The ride took about 14 hours and each place we stopped for a chai in the middle of nowhere the people wanted to meet us. What seemed like a short ride on a map was up and down mountains and through winding roads. We checked into Chonor House at the Norbulingka Institute where we spent our last week in India volunteering teach English to a group of Tibetans at the Lha program in McLeodganj. Hearing their stories were fascinating and we played games like: describe a photo from your phone in English to the group.

Norbulingka Institute, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh-Thangka painting and other Tibetan arts
Norbulingka Tibetan Institute
Tibet is the roof of the world, people used to say.
The spirit of this roof was set aside when Chinese army annexed the land mass of Tibet.
The living map of a peaceful and spiritual country called Tibet still exists in the mind of Tibetans who fled to India and were granted asylum in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
The Norbulingka Institute in Dharamshala keeps alive the spirit of Tibetans who practice Buddhism.
Gurgling sounds of water and an overwhelming sense of peace -this is what we experienced while we walked through the institute in the company of a petite English speaking guide.
Thangka paintings is a form of worship and follow the rules of Buddhist scriptures.
Each painting will take 2-3 months to complete.
Tibetan carpentry takes seven years to master. Arts like inlay work, painting etc can be learnt in three years.
Tangkas made on silks use an intricate applique work to bring ancient figures to life.
The Loslem Doll House is where an ancient way of life is diplayed throgh vibrant dolls. No two dolls are alike.
The Seat of Happiness temple houses a 14-foot-tall Buddha statue. Spending a few minutes in silence in the temple we feel connected to the Almighty.
Tibetan prayers flags fluttering in the wind, monks in crimson robes humming their prayers, and of course the Wheels of prayer reminding us to be grateful to God always!!!
