Nordens Ark 2010
The first video from this year's visit to the wonderful zoo Nordens Ark - the Nordic Ark - in Hunnebostrand in Sweden. An absolutely fantastic place, dedicated to the preservation and propagation of endangered species native to the Scandinavian climate. A lot of scenery and also some animals - Rocky Mountain goat, Przewalski's horses, various birds, urial sheep from Tadjikistan, an amur leopard, a lynx, amur tigers ... and finally a glimpse of the photo exhibition in the old barn. I've got lots more footage of various animals, these'll be coming up in the near future. :-) Keep an eye on my channel. :-)
Tigers @ Nordens Ark 2009
This video shows Uri and Sparta (in that order :-), the two Siberian tigers living at the Nordic Ark, a wonderful zoo in Hunnebostrand in Sweden. Gorgeous animals, but kinda lazy on August 29th when we were there. :-) You also see a lot of their enclosure.
Nordens Ark 2010: Emys orbicularis, European pond turtle
A video showing the various specimens of Emys orbicularis, the European pond turtle, kept at the Nordic Ark in Hunnebostrand, Bohuslän, Sweden. Various ages and sizes. Fantastic animals. :-)
Trevors mums first time to Sweden
Joan, Trevors mum, visited us during some days in August 2019.
We wanted to give her a great time. And we were for example in Gothenburg, Bohus Fortress (Kungälv), Borås (where we live), Nordens Ark (Hunnebostrand), Gränna and Stockholm.
She landed at Landvetter Airport, Gothenburg and went from Arlanda Airport, Stockholm.
Now she is back to UK.
I took all photos and video clips in this video.
Hope you all enjoy!
Timmy utforsker Nordens Ark – Sibirtiger

Ungulates @ Nordens Ark 2009
This video shows the various ungulates to be seen in the wonderful Swedish zoo the Nordic Ark. You see the following animals, in order: Southern Pudú, Rocky Mountain Goat, Przewalski's Horse, Finnish Forest Reindeer, Urial, Markhor, and finally the Pudú again. All part of a wonderful hike in a beautiful forest. :-)
Nordens Ark 2011: Leopards
A short video with some pretty crappy footage of the Ark's two leopard species, the Amur leopard, Panthera pardus orientalis, and the snow leopard, Uncia uncia. It was a very hot day and so these beautiful cats were not seen at their best ... in fact, were hardly seen at all. The snow leopards were almost completely lethargic in the heat and were just lying around in the shade. We were able to spot all five, but that was it, they barely moved a muscle. :-) Very cool to see them though. The Ark has had a lot of breeding success with this difficult animal ... they keep the European studbook for the species and they have produced several litters over the past few years. Check my video from last year to see some adorable leopard cub action. :-)
As for the Amur leopards, that's a different story ... the Ark has what ought to be a breeding pair of this *extremely* endangered species, but AFAIK have never gotten a cub from them. As you will see from the video, they, or at least one of them, suffers from stereotypy. We have observed this in previous years too. It's extremely sad to see this. This species doesn't seem to be able to adapt well to the captive life ... which is so sad, because with only about 50 individuals left in the wild, the only future for this magnificent animal is in captivity. :-(
Våtmarken - the reptile house @ Nordens Ark 2009 (outdoors)
This video shows the outdoors section of the reptile house in the wonderful zoo Nordens Ark in Sweden. You get to see a number of animals - the common European adder, the grass snake or water snake, the subspecies of the same found only on the island of Gotland, the smooth snake, the edible frog (yes, that really is the species name :-), the sand lizard, two adult specimens of the European pond turtle, and the Ark's thriving colony of Northern Bald Ibis. To see the indoors section of the Wetlands, check out my channel. :-)
Nordens Ark 2009
A video from my visit to the fantastic Swedish zoo the Nordic Ark on August 29th, showing off the beautiful wooded area and the buildings and walkways and so on. Not too many animals; I made other videos of those, all of which are coming up on my channel soon. :-)

Birds @ Nordens Ark 2009
A video showing the various birds in the collection at the wonderful zoo Nordens Ark in Sweden. Owls, ibis, cranes, ducks, geese, peregrines, storks. :-)
White-backed woodpeckers at Nordens Ark
There is only one place in the world where the white-backed woodpecker breeds in captivity – and that is at Nordens Ark. Young woodpeckers are being released into the wild, which helps to save the species from extinction in Sweden, where it is Critically Endangered.
Wolverines @ Nordens Ark 2009
A video showing some of the wolverines, Gulo gulo, in the wonderful zoo Nordens Ark in Sweden. We were lucky enough to be there at feeding time. :-) The Ark currently has six wolverines. They are involved in both breeding, conservation and release programs.
Wolves @ Nordens Ark 2009
This video shows the wolf pack at the wonderful Swedish zoo Nordens Ark. At the time of filming (August 2009) the pack consisted of ten animals - the alpha male (born 2003 in Rotterdam), the alpha female (born in 2004 at the Ark), their five pups from last year, four males and one female, and their three female pups born this spring. When we arrived at their huge enclosure they had just been fed, so we got to see them running around with huge slabs of meat, eating and whatnot. :-) I got some great footage. Towards the end of the video you also see a little bit of the Ark's maned wolf, in a different enclosure, naturally. Enjoy. :-)
Red panda @ Nordens Ark 2009
Another video from this year's visit to the wonderful Swedish zoo Nordens Ark. This one shows their currently single red panda, climbing trees and running about. What an elegant little creature. :-) The Ark is involved in the breeding program for this species and several panda cubs have been born there.
Nordens Ark 2011: Natrix natrix
Towards the end of our day at the Ark we were thrilled to get this close personal encounter with one of the park's no doubt many unauthorized residents, this lovely European grass snake, Natrix natrix. The park has all four of the Scandinavian species of snake in its herptile area, the Wetlands, but we didn't see a single scale of any of them on this visit. All the snakes are kept in outdoor enclosures, and of course with the very high temperature there was nothing to be seen of any of them. So while we were of course expecting that, it was still a bit of a disappointment ... especially to me ;-) ... but then we had this wonderful experience to make up for it. Natrix natrix can be very striking in appearance, and this beautiful female was crossing one of the footpaths when I caught sight of her. Of course I rushed over to catch her. As you can see, she was absolutely furious at being interrupted in this way while she was peacefully going about her business. You can even hear it if you listen closely ... she had no qualms about expressing her displeasure. I really stank afterwards. :-D But she seemed to be relatively used to humans as she never even tried to bite ... she was really only angry, not frightened. Good for her. :-) A really wonderful experience, and great to have my educated guess borne out that quite a few animals live at the Ark on their own initiative. :-)
