Moorlands and views: Late summer in Nordmarka – the outback of Oslo, Norway
One of my first videos from Norwegian nature. Middle August, 2011. The woods of Nordmarka, Oslo, were warm and quiet. I walked all day and into the soft, mild darkness of night, still with the scents from the day that had been.
I midten av august 2011 var det varm og stille seinsommer i Marka. Jeg gikk fra Åneby over Varingskollen mot Karlshaug og videre forbi Rottungen og Kamphaug til Skjærsjødammen, Ullevålseter og Sognsvann. Men da var det for lengst blitt fullmånenatt. Her er noen glimt av det fineste som turen hadde å gi meg - av myrer og utsyn. Dette er mine landskap. Her faller jeg til ro.

Riding from Tryvannsstua (398 mamsl) along Lake Tryvann through Tryvannskleiva up to Tryvannshøgda (530 mamsl) and the broadcasting tower (118 m). Total distance 2.3 km. More info at

The sloping, wooded lands include eight separate sections: Vestmarka, Barumsmarka, Krokskogen, Nordmarka, Romeriksasene, Lillomarka, Ostmarka, and Sormarka. Together, they take up an area twice the size of New York City. Head here to enjoy the natural wonders that Norway has to offer, located just outside the city center. Mostly undisturbed forests and hills, these areas make great places for walking, hiking, jogging, biking, and cross-country skiing. Enjoy the extensive network of routes here, as well as swimming and fishing in the lakes. Stop by one of the several cabins dispersed throughout for fresh cinnamon buns and hot coffee.

Winter magic in Oslo, Norway
Oslo might be the most beautiful capital of the world! A short bus-ride will take you into these woods, called The Northern Woods, Nordmarka. I have walked these woods since I discovered them as a teenager, and many of my videos show the most wonderful spots there. Nordmarka is like a second home to me, maybe my only home, since I have moved so much around. Be my guest, and if you sometime come to Oslo, call me and let me be your guide to the places the locals go - not so spectacular as the fjord lands western Norway, but deep in the legendary land of of Norwegian tales. Here, on Christmas Day, I visit what is called the Nordmarka Alps, some hills at about 500-600 meters, but nevertheless with views over the hills and valleys I call my home.
Hiking in Oslo: Hammeren to Ullevålseter
Great hiking opportunities are just a short bus ride from downtown Oslo. A one-hour walk into the vast forest of Nordmarka that surrounds Oslo is Ullevålseter.
Ullevålseter is an old shieling/farm in the forest north of Oslo which has been converted into a ski lodge. It's a popular destination for hiking or trekking, both summer and winter. There is a cafe which serves refreshments and traditional Norwegian cakes.
The trip in this video starts at Hammeren in Maridalen. Bus 51 which goes from Nydalen in Oslo stops at Hammeren. We walked the gravel path past Skjærsjøen lake to Ullevålseter. It's also possible to take this road by bicycle, but motor vehicles are prohibited.
From Ullevålseteren we went back the same way, but it's possible to take other paths which will take you to Sognsvann or Frognersetern in Oslo.
If you want to walk only downwards, you can start by taking the metro (T-bane) to Frognerseteren. Then walk to Ullevålseteren, and then down to Hammeren from there.
For navigation, Google Maps on a mobile phone works great. Just enter navigation by foot to Ullevålseter in Maps.
