Shelley Niro is on Exhibition at Norfolk Art Centre until September 2!
June 24 – September 2, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, June 24 at 7:00pm
Join us for the opening reception of Indian Summer, a solo exhibition of work by Shelley Niro. A chamber group from the Grand River Chorus will sing selections, written by local composers, based on the poetry of Pauline Johnson.
Indian Summer presents a body of work by acclaimed Canadian artist, Shelley Niro about First Nations identity and community. Produced over the last three years, this exhibition features new paintings based on Haudenosaunee legend and culture, and photoworks referencing the relocation of her ancestors from the Mohawk Valley (in upstate New York) in the 18th century. Informed by a responsibility to her past and present, the works in this exhibition reference both Six Nations cultural traditions and the problems of urban native peoples.
Shelly Niro, an award-winning Mohawk artist, grew up on the Six Nations reserve and currently lives in Brantford. Niro holds a diploma in the performing arts from Cambrian College, a fine arts degree in painting and sculpture from the Ontario College of Art, and a master of fine arts from the University of Western Ontario. She was the first recipient of the Ontario Arts Council’s Aboriginal Art Award in 2012. Her work can be found in the collections of The National Gallery of Canada, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Smithsonian National Museum for the American Indian, and Art Gallery of Ontario, among many others.
