Visiting Norham Castle
For 450 years Norham Castle, first built in the 12th century, was one of the great English strongholds along the river Tweed, a barrier against the Scots. The Scots besieged it nine times, capturing it on four occasions. The remains of the impressive great tower still reveal signs of many building phases between the 12th and 16th centuries.
The importance of Norham was illustrated when Henry II ordered Hugh du Puiset, who became Bishop of Durham in 1153, to rebuild the castle. This was done on a grand scale, erecting the great tower on the site of Flambard’s original two-storey hall to provide high-status accommodation.
Between 1208 and 1212 King John also spent large sums on the castle. Its strength was demonstrated in 1215 when Alexander II of Scotland besieged Norham for 40 days, but failed to take it. Peace between England and Scotland was signed at Norham in 1219, and lasted along the border for most of the 13th century.
The Scots besieged Norham unsuccessfully in 1318, 1319 and 1322, and eventually took it in 1327, but it was restored to the bishop the following year.
Thereafter Norham benefited from a period of relative peace, before it was besieged by James IV of Scotland in 1497 in support of Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the English throne. The castle resisted attack for two weeks before an English army relieved it.
Much more significant damage was done in 1513 when James IV invaded with a large army, and this time captured Norham after a short siege. In less than three weeks Norham was restored to the Bishop of Durham after the English defeated the Scots at the Battle of Flodden nearby. But the ferocious Scots bombardment had resulted in great damage.

'The Most Dangerous Place in England', Norham Castle? (15th August 2017)
15th August 2017
We were on a short break up on the Scottish borders and stopped off at Norham Castle to have a look about. According to the information sign, this was 'the most dangerous place in England'. I am unsure if it was dangerous for the English or for the Scots.
In 1292 Edward I of England chose John Baliol to be King of Scotland at nearby Berwick castle but it was at Norham Castle that Baliol was to pay homage to Edward, 3 days after becoming King of Scotland. Later it took Robert the Bruce four attempts to take the castle.
There was nobody about and we had the place to ourselves. However, the changeable weather meant my family made a hasty retreat to the car during the heaviest of the fleeting showers. Although my daughter later returned with me to have a look around the keep before we headed to the nearby bee farm for a bit of cake and a cup of tea.

Norham Castle
So many of you have asked about the castle in the background to my chapter reads. It's an English Heritage site just outside Berwick. Here's a short video I recorded for them.

12th Century Castle on the English side of the Scotland/England Border near Norham Village, North Northumberland.
Norham Castle
First built right on the England/Scotland border by Ranulf Flambard, the Bishop of Durham in 1121, Norham castle was besieged by the Scots 9 times and captured by them 4 times in what was then a rather lawless part of the country. Whilst the castle had been rebuilt after the last siege in 1513, in 1596 Elizabeth 1 refused to spend any more money on it and after the union of the Scots and English crowns in 1605 it slowly fell into decline.

Norham Castle 2013
Named The Most Dangerous Castle In England due to its strategic position, overlooking the River Tweed and within close proximity to Scotland, who have fought long-standing wars with their English counterparts.
The only report we have to-date, with regards to Paranormal Activity, is that of a grey lady, who is supposedly resident within the castle grounds.

Norham Castle - History, Ghosts, Mediums, Spiritbox and Echovox
Norham Castle in Northumberland on the border with Scotland has had a turbulent history, rightfully claimed in the medieval period to be the most dangerous place in England
We went there with Haunted Scotland to investigate the legend of the Grey Lady - what we accomplished - well, judge for yourself
The EVPs were left out as they were of too low quality to reproduce, and after 4 days of making this I had gone through enough....

JMW Turner - Searching for his viewpoint of Norham Castle
The later paintings by English painter JMW Turner (1775-1851) have influenced and inspired my (intentional camera movement) ICM landscape photography for a while now, so once my car was fixed I took the chance to head up to Norham to hunt down the location he made his sketches from on a few visits in late 1700s and early 1800s that ended up producing one of his most iconic works in his later life.
Norham village lies on the southern side of the river Tweed and is over looked by its historic ruined castle, the subject of a number of works, both watercolour and oils by Turner throughout his career. Most famous is probably Norham Castle, Sunrise c.1845

Haunted Northumberland - Norham Castle 2013 A Short PSB7 Spiritbox Session
Back in 2013, Haunted Scotland and Spirit Research NE conducted a joint investigation at Norham Castle, Northumberland to see whether the local folklore of the Grey Lady was true. This is the PSB7 Session finally analysed. It was remarkably quiet on the day and with no radio stations picked up on whatsoever....it was also remarkably HOT
