Norma BRUNI (born Norma Mistroni in Bologna, Italy 1913 – died in Milan, Italy, 1971). She was one of the most intriguing Italian female singers of late 1930 and 1940s and one of the most well-known voices on the Italian radio of the time of the 2nd WW. By her participation in the musical-cultural propaganda of the Italian Social Republic, she to some extent contributed to enforcement of the Mussolini’s regime. A nice and modest Bolognese housekeeper, daughter of a bricklayer, Norma Bruni became an artist literally by chance - discovered by the EIAR officer from Rome, (EIAR was the Italian nationwide broadcast, later transformed into RAI) who on his visit to Bologna heard Norma when she was singing and washing dishes in his friend’s kitchen. Her outstanding, vibrating counteralto and a stunning beauty he saw, made him immediately ask, whether she’d be ready to begin the singing career. The proposal was gladly accepted and Norma Bruni started taking singing lessons first with the Bolognese teacher Sergio Wing to continue studying in Turin, where in 1939 she took part in the 2nd EIAR “new talents” competition. Pippo Barzizza, leader of one of the most popular dance bands in Italy, noticed her among the finalists and immediately proposed her engagement to make recordings for Parlophon. It’s how started her great – yet very short career. Equipped with a contralto voice she charmed audiences on the radio and when the war broke out, she became the most loved female voice by Italian soldiers on all fronts of the 2nd world war. Her popularity reached climax, when she started participating in the concerts arranged especially for the wounded Italian soldiers. After recording sessions for Parlophon, she also cut sides for Cetra Records, yet alltogether Bruni's recording balance counts merely 41 sides between 1939-43, plus several more after 1943, when she unsuccessfully tried to return into favor of the post-war Italian audience. Unfortunately for her, the Italians remembered well how strong was influence of Bruni's unspeakable beauty and her suggestive, warm voice – in calling to the front “in the name of Mother-Italy” the whole generation of young Italians. In her interviews before death, Norma Bruni draws a convincing portrait of herself as a young and unaware woman from the lower class, who felt obliged to make the best from the talents she had been given, yet in the same time she was put in front of challenges, which in such a terrible time were too difficult to meet by a simple girl from the province.
