Skok w bok na rok - Russia (Baikal Arshan Ulan Ude) – e04
At last we came to our main destination in Russia - Baikal lake. We've spent few days camping on Olhon island (we really recommend that). Next was buryat village Arshan in Sayan mountains and Ulan Ude - last stop before Mongolia.

Siberia Drone Flight: Siberia is a vast Russian province encompassing most of Northern Asia, with terrain spanning tundra, coniferous forest and mountain ranges including the Ural, Altai and Verkhoyansk. Lake Baikal, in its south, is the worlds deepest lake, circled by a network of hiking paths called the Great Baikal Trail. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes Baikal on its route between Moscow and the Sea of Japan. Lake Baikals largest island, Olkhon, is a center of shamanism marked by Shaman Rock, an outcropping held sacred by indigenous islanders. The city of Irkutsk, the western gateway to Baikal, offers classical Russian architecture and Russian Orthodox churches. The Altai Mountains are river-rafting and mountaineering destinations with diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The Siberian Traps, a region of stairlike hills formed by ancient volcanoes, include Putorana Nature Reserve, which protects lakes and animals like reindeer and snow sheep. Novosibirsk, Siberias largest city, houses wood-lace buildings and the State Art Museum. // Irkutsk is a city on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. The river embankment is lined with hurches, including the Epiphany Cathedral (Sobor Bogoyavleniya), with gilded onion domes, and the Spasskaya Church, with its soaring bell tower. The restored neoclassical Moskovskie Vorota arch is also by the water. Near Kirov Square, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum has ancient icons and more recent Russian artworks. // Ulan-Ude is a city in East Siberia, Russia. The main square Ploshchad Sovetov is home to the huge Lenin Head Monument. The City History Museum is set within the former house of a tea merchant. Nearby is the 18th-century Odigitrievsky Cathedral. To the north, Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha is a Buddhist temple with gilded stupas and sweeping city views. The outdoor Ethnographic Museum displays traditional Buryat wooden yurts. [wikipedia // Google]

Trans Mongolian Railway | Exploring Lake Baikal in a Russan Van
Today we did something we have been looking forward to for a VERY long time... ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Today we explored Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia in an old Russian army van. We've planned a couple of stops in Siberia, but we have been most excited about this one. Lake Baikal is the worlds deepest lake. It has enough water to cover the entire surface of the earth. Olkhon Island is a very popular tourist destination for the people of Russia and it's also the biggest island on Lake Baikal.
We made our way here after stopping our Trans Siberian Railway trip in Irkutsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia. Olkhon Island is about a 6-hour drive from Irkutsk but it's well worth the visit if you're ever in Russia.

Euronews is available in 13 other languages:
One of Russia's most interesting republics is in South-Eastern Siberia on the Mongolian border - Buryatia: a rich variety of cultures and traditions are intertwined in its history.
In the past, every Buryat household had camels. They disappeared from homes during the 20th century. Now the humped animals are, once again, becoming popular.
Bair Mandanov, a local camel herdsman explained to euronews:
They say that long ago, long before we were born, the Buryats had a lot of camels. Now we want that tradition to revive, he said.
The return of camels to national parks is one of many signs of Buryatia's drift back to its roots.
Neighbouring Lake Baikal contains 20 percent of the planet's unfrozen fresh water. The republic therefore has to prevent pollution, which rules out heavy industry.
A third of Buryatia's one million residents live in its capital, Ulan-Ude - a modern and dynamic city with rising buildings, busy streets and a vibrant nightlife.
Outside the capital, Buryatia is a land of pristine nature. Baikal's beauty attracts many visitors. Booming tourism brings income, but raises concerns for the lake's wellbeing.
The revival of ethnic cultures pulls more tourists into Buryatia's rural valleys. Traditional rites are still alive in local villages: they combine nomadic worshiping of nature's spirits, with ritual offerings, songs and meals - like boiled lamb. Its meat is considered pure and healthy, and bones are used for fortune-telling.
Dymbrin Borkhonova, art director, Hengerge folk ensemble explained:
These high mountains...surround us, protecting us from various ills. We pray every morning to these holy gods - to our mountains and the deities that dwell at their peaks, he said.
The love of nature is rooted in the healing properties of the local land. The tectonic fracture that created Baikal created natural geothermal springs that became therapeutic resorts in the 18th century.
Vladimir Borisenko, a local bus driver enjoys the natural luxury:
It's nice to stand under the hot stream when the weather is cold, it's a healthy and pleasant massage, he mused.
Today, the so-called 'valley of 100 springs' is a site of mass pilgrimage. The mineral sources provide healing powers. Some people splash water onto their eyes, hoping to improve their eyesight. Others bring bottles to collect water for drinking.
The cult of nature is typical of Buryatia's rural regions where ancient shamanic beliefs coexist with Tibetan Buddhism, creating a mixture of spiritual traditions. Euronews visited a village datsan, where a service was led by a local elder with a gift for preaching to deities.
Sodnom Lama explained to euronews:
I would say it's a mixed rite. The offerings are made to the shamanistic spirits that are bound by an oath to Buddhism that also makes them deities of the Buddhist pantheon. So it's not a purely shamanistic rite, he said.
A land of true religious diversity, Buryatia is also a home to Old Believer Christians - an Orthodox minority whose ancestors were exiled here after the 17th century division in the Russian church.

'After the first reports from the media, we tried first of all to understand what actually happened. Our Embassy in Pyongyang is talking to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People''s Republic of Korea, to confirm that the events actually took place, to explain the circumstances and as soon as this has happened we we will give out more information. If the large number of victims and damage is confirmed, I am sure the Russian Government will be ready to offer vital help to the country, if North Korea asks.'

STORYLINE:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, said on Friday that if they were asked, Russia would be prepared to offer assistance to North Korea, following the train crash in that country.
North Korean authorities have given United Nations (UN) relief agencies permission to travel to the site of Thursday''s train explosion, according to UN official Christiane Berthiaume, spokeswoman for the World Food Programme (WFP)
The agreement followed two meetings earlier on Friday between the North Korean government and Masood Hyder, WFP''s representative in North Korea.
Berthiaume said the mission would travel to the area over the weekend.
The international Red Cross in Beijing said at least 54 people died and 1,249 were injured when two trains carrying explosives collided in the town of Ryongchon. Initial reports had said as many as 3,000 people were killed or injured.
Communist North Korea has remained silent on the disaster, despite confirmation of Thursday afternoon''s blast in the town of Ryongchon by the governments in Seoul and Beijing.
Damien Personnaz, spokesman for UNICEF (United Nations Children''s Fund), said the UN children''s agency was planning to take medicines and first aid supplies to the region.

Antipodes
In geography, the antipodes (/ænˈtɪpədiːz/; from Greek: ἀντίποδες, from anti- opposed and pous foot) of any place on Earth is the point on the Earth's surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points that are antipodal /ænˈtɪpədəl/ to each other are connected by a straight line running through the centre of the Earth.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Antipodes is often used to refer to Australia and New Zealand, and Antipodeans to their inhabitants. Geographically the antipodes of Britain and Ireland are in the Pacific Ocean, south of New Zealand. This gave rise to the name of the Antipodes Islands of New Zealand, which are close to the antipodes of London at about 50° S 179° E. The antipodes of Australia are in the North Atlantic Ocean, while parts of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are antipodal to New Zealand.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
The Buryats (Buryat: Буряад, translit. Buryaad; Mongolian: Буриад, ᠪᠣᠷᠢᠶᠠᠳ, Buriad), numbering approximately 500,000, are the largest indigenous group in Siberia, mainly concentrated in their homeland, the Buryat Republic, a federal subject of Russia. They are the major northern subgroup of the Mongols.Buryats share many customs with other Mongols, including nomadic herding, and erecting gers for shelter. Today, the majority of Buryats live in and around Ulan-Ude, the capital of the republic, although many live more traditionally in the countryside. They speak a central Mongolic language called Buryat. According to UNESCO's 2010 edition of the Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger, the Buryat language is classified as severely endangered.

Global Forest Link: Wrap-Up Conference and Next Steps
This live interactive conference is the culminating session of the Global Forest Link (GFL) pilot project. During the event participants summarized their experiences, discussed the project impact, and suggested next steps to raise awareness about forest change and the implications.
Over the past 4 months students from San Diego, California, USA and Republic of Buryatia, Russia studied forest change and the implications (due to fires, drought, insect infestation, logging, human development, climate change, environmental stress, excessive forest density, etc.). Students conducted field research in their local regions, documented forest change in their local community, collaborated with international partner schools, connected with national experts, and created digital stories to describe their experiences.
• GFL digital stories are published at
