North East Rail Trail, Tasmania
The North East Rail Trail is a 52km return bike ride from Scottsdale to Billycock Hill and back.
26km each way, along an old disused rail line. The trail has been upgraded to be a smooth dirt track with very gentle gradients along the full length.
The Scottsdale end travels through open farmland, while the Billycock Hill end travels though lush bushland and rail cuttings.
This is not a ride for hard-core MTB'ers looking for extreme downhill action. But rather, it is a gentle family type ride or for those just looking for a traffic free cruise through the Tasmanian countryside.
You can start the ride at either end, or several places along the way with ample parking available.
It's well worth the drive to either end of the track to go for a ride.

Cycling the North East Rail Trail, Tasmania, Jan 2015
Bike track 21 km in length with expansion at both ends planned to be completed in 2015. North East Tasmania, close to Scottsdale. Rough track at present but maintenance due soon.
ABC News: Rail Trails cause division, 31/1/2016
Rail Trails are becoming increasingly common, but at the expense of existing rail infrastructure which can be re-used for future transport & tourism needs, greatly saving future infrastructure expenditure.
The North East Line east of Scottsdale has been lifted and converted into a Rail Trail, the line last seeing trains in 2005.
The North East Line was also popular for tourism, with the Don River Railway carrying hundreds of visitors into the north-east during the previous decade (DRR would still be running trains to Scottsdale if access was granted and line maintained).
A similar situation exists with the Derwent Valley Line in the south, with Bicycle Tasmania wanting to rip up the line despite the fact that the Derwent Valley Railway has upgraded, maintained, and run successful tourist trains along the line since 1990.

Heading down the East Coast of Tasmania taking in beautiful sights and National Parks along the way. We may have had to hop in a car for part of the journey (fire ant sting is a thing apparently?!) but cycle touring wild Tasmania (ie Tassie!) continues to impress.
