Tinian Trip Part I
My father and I travelled to Saipan and Tinian Island in March 2010 to visit the WWII historic sites. This is Part I of our Tinian trip as we travel up to the very historic North Field which in 1945 was the largest and busiest airport in the world. It's best known for the launching of the atomic bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Travel eventually leads to that one way to my mind. There is a world tragedy hidden at the Northfield Airfield, which is now unused. Originally it was the Wuxi airfield of the Japanese Air Force. However, after World War II, the US Army occupied Tinian and was renamed Northfield. In August 1945, the B29, equipped with atomic bombs, scrambled into Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leaving a name for the world history as an A-bomb mount. An atomic bomb that killed over 100,000 people. Even after half a century has passed, the tragedy is not erased. The photos of the actual situation at that time are on display so far and we can look back on that day. Tinian is peaceful, clear and green more than anywhere else. But we have a history of pain. During the Japanese colonial rule there were Koreans who were forced into this small island in the Pacific Ocean. It's a monument to honor them. Drinking water and a banana that somebody put on rang my heart. Our ancestors who had missed their hometown on this island and had lonely death. What happened to them? After the war, the remains of Koreans excavated in Tinian Island are said to be over five thousand. You should never forget those who fell on this earth. I also prayed earnestly with all my heart. Do not let this tragedy happen again ...

Atomic Bomb loading pit number 1 at North Field, Tinian Island, CNMI
This is where the Little Boy Atomic Bomb was assembled for installation in the B-29 Enola Gay before the bombing of Hiroshima in World War II. Apparently the bomb was so large it had to be assembled in this pit so that it could be properly fitted into the B-29 Superfortress bomber.
Hiroshima was the primary target of the first nuclear bombing mission on 6 August, 1945 with Kokura and Nagasaki as alternative targets. [Due to the Japanese' refusal to surrender, a second atomic bomb, the Fat Man, was dropped on Nagasaki a few days later...] The Enola Gay was piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets with the plane having been named after his mother (who, herself, was named after a heroine in a novel).
The Enola Gay took off from North Field, on Tinian Island accompanied by two other B-29s, The Great Artiste, carrying instrumentation, and a then-nameless aircraft later called Necessary Evil, commanded by Captain George Marquardt, to take photographs.
After leaving Tinian the aircraft made their way separately to Iwo Jima, where they rendezvoused at 2,440 metres (8,010 feet) and set course for Japan. The aircraft arrived over the target in clear visibility at 9,855 metres (32,333 feet). Captain William S. Deak Parsons of Project Alberta, who was in command of the mission, armed the bomb during the flight to minimize the risks during takeoff. His assistant, Second Lieutenant Morris R. Jeppson, removed the safety devices 30 minutes before reaching the target area.
The release at 08:15 (Hiroshima time) went as planned, and the Little Boy took 43 seconds to fall from the aircraft flying at 9,470 metres (31,060 feet ) to the predetermined detonation height about 600 metres (1,968 feet) above the city.
The Enola Gay traveled 18.5 kilometres (11.5 miles) before it felt the shock waves from the blast. Although buffeted by the shock, neither the Enola Gay nor The Great Artiste was damaged
My visit to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) was because I had the good fortune to participate in an attempt at a first ascent up Agrigan Island Located about 385 kilometres (240 miles) north of Tinian. While preparing for the climb, from Saipan, my climbing partners and I explored some of CNMI's other islands - thus giving me an opportunity to explore Tinian (including a hike to its highpoint prior to my visit to this historical site).
The Mariana Islands are part of Micronesia, which is a subregion of Oceania.

Geiger Fury Tinian North Field BEFORE May 13 2012

TINIAN (May 14,2012) -- Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 12 and Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 return to the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, Tinian island, in support of Exercise Geiger Fury May 14, 2012.
The purpose of Exercise Geiger Fury is to execute and assess combined expeditionary operations in the South Pacific.
As soon as the Marines came ashore, they began setting up a Forward Operations Base.
We are setting up a FOB in order to better control and coordinate Exercise Geiger Fury, said Capt. Mark Schouten, MWSS-171 Officer in Charge. As well as conduct repairs to the islands northern airfield built during World War Two.
Marines worked into the late hours of the night to set up the FOB, clearing the land in order to set up tents and OE-254 communications gear.
The OE-254 provides air and ground communications for the entire exercise.
The OE-254 is considered a safety net, said Sgt. Ryan D. Kish, MWSS-171 communications non-commissioned officer in charge. The reason we call it a safety net is because the OE-254 antenna provides a fail-safe frequency that provides support in the event of an emergency throughout the entire area of operations.
Exercise Geiger Fury is not just about a show of force.
The purpose is also to partner with local community services providers and bolster their capability to serve the local citizens of Tinian. As the exercise continues on, the Marines and Naval personnel will conduct several community volunteer efforts in order to help in the preservation of historical sites throughout the island.
Throughout Exercise Geiger Fury Marines and naval personnel will repair the island's northern airfield, conduct flight operations, as well as provide medical, dental care and community outreach to the residents of Tinian.

2005 Tinian
Tinian is on my Atom Bomb Tour. It is from North Field here that the B-29s departed to A-bomb Japan in the desperate effort to get the Japanese military to halt the war and end years of bloodshed on the planet that took over 70 million lives. Other stops on the tour are Trinity Site in New Mexico and Hunters Point on San Francisco Bay. Peleliu is also an incidental part of the tour because planes from the base captured there by US Marines found the survivors of the USS Indianapolis, sunk by a Japanese sub only days after delivering critical bomb components to Tinian.
