St. Paul Island Lighthouse, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
This small metal lighthouse once stood on St. Paul Island, a remote island located in the Cabot Strait to the north of Cape Breton. The tower replaced and earlier wood frame structure destroyed by fire going into service in 1917 and was in use until 1962 when automated systems made it obsolete. After decommissioning it was dismantled and moved to the Canadian Coast Guard base in Dartmouth. Following a decade long effort the tower was moved back to Cape Breton this time to the community of Dingwall where it now sits beside the St. Paul Island Museum.

Beulach Ban Watefall - A little known waterfall in the Cape Breton Highlands Park, Canada

Waipu Museum - The Search For Paradise
In the early 1800s, thousands of Highlanders emigrated to Nova Scotia to escape the harships of Scotland. Amongst them was a charismatic Presbyterian preacher called Norman McLeod, who became the leader of a Gaelic-speaking community centred around St Anns, in Cape Bretton. The community flourished for almost 30 years until a series of crop failures caused widespread famine.
Under the leadership of Norman McLeod, they built two ships - The Margaret and the Highland Lassie - and in 1851, they set sail for Adelaide. Disappointed with Australia, they continued the journey that eventually brought them to Waipu.
In the following years another four ships, The Gertrude, The Spray, The Breadalbane, and the Ellen Lewis, Left Cape Breton to join the original settlers. Nearly 900 people left Cape Breton to join the original settlers. Nearly 900 people left Cape Breton on the six ships and their descendants now number in the tens of thousands.
The Waipu Museum is dedicated to preserving the story of the heroic voyages of their ancestors. One of the most remarkable migrations in the history of the world.
The full 65 min DVD of Waipu The Search for Paradise can be purchased from the museum shop waipumuseum.com
Cape Breton Travel Guide | Cabot Trail Road Trip in Nova Scotia, Canada
In this video, we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes, this time visiting Cape Breton, a large island in Nova Scotia that is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso. During our visit, we stayed in a converted barn, hiked the trails of the Cape Breton Highlands, and drove around 300 kilometres on the world-famous Cabot Trail that borders the island.
Our first day kicked off early with a drive up to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We spent 2 days hiking the various trails and searching for the elusive moose. The funniest moment of that hike: there were signs with bear warnings throughout the park so I think that was on the back of everyone’s mind, and of course Togo was walking upfront because he insists on leading the pack. Well, there was a group of hikers coming from the opposite direction and when Togo was the first one to round the bend all by his lonesome self, the hikers saw his black furry face and thought he was a bear! Poor Togo looked really confused - he just wanted to greet the group of hikers.
Of course, no trip to Cape Breton would have been complete without driving the world-famous Cabot Trail, which is named after John Cabot, or Giovanni Caboto, an Italian navigator and explorer, who was one of the first Europeans of modern times to reach North America in 1497. Cabot had been denied support for his expedition in Spain and Portugal, so he went to England, where he received financial support from Henry the Seventh. Cabot's plan was to reach Asia by sailing west along the North Atlantic and he estimated that this route could be shorter and faster than the one recently discovered by Columbus. The exact location of his arrival in North America is unknown, but today the route that borders Cape Breton is named after him.
During our trip to Cape Breton, we also visited the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site in Baddeck. Alexander Graham Bell is best known as the inventor of the telephone, but he also invented the photophone, the metal detector, the hydrofoil, and he designed the Silver Dart which made the first aircraft flight in Canada. Perhaps more interesting is that apart from all these great inventions, Bell devoted most of his life to teaching the deaf, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. We really enjoyed this museum and would highly recommend it if you’re in the area.
That's a little taste of our trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia! We hope you enjoyed this video and we'll see you in the next episode where we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes. Next up: Prince Edward Island!

TWO RANGE LIGHTS
The Margaree Harbour Range Lights, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia are deteriorating, and we need your support to help our community restore them to their original beauty. These are not the more common lighthouses which warn ships of danger, to “stay away;” ours are two Directional or Range Lights,” welcoming seafarers in, showing them a safe path to harbour.
They are geographic and historical icons of our area, Nova Scotia and Canada, and are still being used—a direct link with our past. Descendants of the men who took care of the lights in the past, and others who sailed under these lights, still use them today. They are simple, square, sturdy wooden structures, held down by cables and have withstood whatever nature has thrown at them in our extreme climate for 115 years. Other lighthouses are being replaced by steel poles with a light on top.
At any given time there are about 25-30 local lobster or crab fishing boats at our wharf; from the opening of the season at the beginning of May through to December, the boats are busy. Fisherpeople continue to set sail here in the early hours of the day, and, even with the modern navigational aids such as GPS, they can still use these lights for guidance and comfort when returning home at night. The history of Margaree’s onshore fishery, characterized by individual owner-operators, is a vital part of our history, our culture and our understanding of ourselves.
Our community supports our efforts to save and restore the two Lights once they are transferred to us. Fortunately this simple, square, wooden design will also allow the community to readily maintain them in future. Following the transfer of ownership, we want to refurbish them to their original condition. These Lighthouses still have good bones, but minor structural fixes are necessary. Some trim and glass needs repair, the cedar-shakes will be replaced and finally, a fresh coat of paint applied.
We hope you will become honorary members of our community and participants in our history by supporting the Lights!!

Age of Sail Heritage Centre
A possible route to your roots, if any of your ancestors were born or lived in Port Greville, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The Age of Sail Heritage Centre, overlooking the tidal Greville River, pays tribute to the heritage of the communities along the Minus Channel. The theme is from Timber to Tall Ships, brought to life through pictures, videos, models, artifacts and hands on exhibits. The site was once a shipyard and mill. The main building, blacksmith shop and lighthouse are historic community buildings which have been dismantled, moved to the site and rebuilt. The fine tool and ship model collections are especially interesting, local genealogy, census records and information regarding over 700 ships built on the shore are available.

Celtic Music Interpretive Centre
The Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and promote Cape Breton's traditional Celtic Music through Education, Research, and Performance. Because Cape Bretoners have traveled far and wide, the reaches of the Centre are far beyond the boundaries of a small island on the east coast of Canada.
The centre is located in Judique, only 20 minutes from the Canso Causeway as you travel north-west on Rt.19. Here is the oldest established community of Scottish ancestry on Cape Breton Island and the oldest Scottish Highland Catholic parish on the island. Take a 2 hour drive from Sydney or 1 hr 15 min from Baddeck to get here.
Gaelic singing at Highland Village Museum, Iona, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
I have corrected the original, incorrect, translation I had on - thank you Domhnall1946
The song is actually a sailor's song about the sea -
Verse1 - is about a hard winter when a French vessel was lost at Cape George
Verse 2 - is about leaving on a Monday, but being driven off course, main man aboard.
Verse 3 - clearer at dusk, we lit candles & fixed the compass
Verse 4 - mother is melancholy, weeping for her brothers - one or two on board
Verse 5 - Skipper says to crew Raise your Spirits, put a reef in the sails
Verse 6 - Sailor's sweetheart verse. She won't be false.
