Errington Wildlife Recovery Centre predicting busy year
ERRINGTON - Rehabilitating Vancouver Island black bears is not cheap, and recovery operations are predicting a very busy season. In early April the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre had their first malnourished and abandoned bear dropped off. The infant black bear is on the road to recovery, but the timing of her adoption is worrying wildlife specialists. We are seeing a lot of animals that just aren't finding enough food, says wildlife care specialist Julie Mackey, so it could set up an interesting year.
Last season the rehabilitation centre introduced five Vancouver Island black bears back into the wild after being adopted in near-death states. The not for profit operation is committed to accepting any wildlife it is brought, but in the case of black bears, rehabilitation is not cheap and the prospect of an above average year is worrisome. These little guys are here for a year and a half so if you have a good math head you can figure out 40 dollars a day for a year and a half. The chief operating officer for the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre says the process to reintroduce the bears back into the wild is extremely expensing and hopes the public will continue to support the centre in what could be a trying season.

VIDEO: Dramatic eagle rescue, & stunning release of another!
The work of the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre makes a profound impact on injured wildlife. The work is hard and intense, but it comes with great reward!
In this episode of Black Press Media’s Impress Focus TV, you’ll see amazing video as NIWRA experts locate and net a bald eagle that had been injured in a fight, and release a rehabilitated eagle back into the wild.
Rescuing animals is just part of NIWRA’s mission, hosts Jodi Young Tim Palmer explain. Rehabilitation and release are part of the centre’s core mandate.
Impress Focus TV viewers will see stunning footage of a magnificent eagle launched on its first flight back to the wild after rescue and rehabilitation, soaring off the stone bluffs of Little Mountain.
The experts at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre have the knowledge and the facilities to help orphaned bear cubs, but it comes with a cost.
