Southern Russia and the Caucasus
South of Russia is very diverse. Here are the resorts of the Krasnodar Krai and the Northern Caucasus, skyscrapers of the city of Grozny, Olympic objects in Sochi and ruins of ancient cities. Also traditionally it has been the last line of defense.
Open University has launched a new course, “Map of Russia”, which is dedicated to the cultural and social life of the country outside its larger metropolitan areas.
Although the age of empires has passed, today's Russia remains captive to the power of sovereign illusions, largely ignoring its vast federal potential. Regions are treated as mere resource bowels, or at best, as suppliers of personnel for the several cities, headed by Moscow, with a population of over a million.
Our aim is to reveal a different Russia, from the North-West to the Far East, a Russia that is better known by its inhabitants, mentioned on social media and only occasionally discussed by state news sources.
We want to give a new context to Russia’s communities, replacing the usual economic perspective with one that highlights the distinctive socio-cultural frameworks of each region.

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op 45 (with Full Score) [4K UHD]
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op 45 (1940)
Tugan Sokhiev, Conductor
Berliner Philharmoniker
I. Non Allegro - 0:00
II. Andante con moto - 11:56
III. Lento Assai – Allegro Vivace - 21:52
Recorded and broadcast live from the Berliner Philharmonie on 21 January 2012.
From Wikipedia: The Symphonic Dances, Op. 45, is an orchestral suite in three movements. Completed in 1940, it is Sergei Rachmaninoff's last composition. The work summarizes Rachmaninoff's compositional output.
The work is fully representative of the composer's later style with its curious, shifting harmonies, the almost Prokofiev-like grotesquerie of the outer movements and the focus on individual instrumental tone colors throughout (highlighted by his use of an alto saxophone in the opening dance). The opening three-note motif, introduced quietly but soon reinforced by heavily staccato chords and responsible for much of the movement's rhythmic vitality, is reminiscent of the Queen of Shemakha's theme in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel, the only music by another composer that he had taken out of Russia with him in 1917.
The Dances allowed him to indulge in a nostalgia for the Russia he had known, much as he had done in the Third Symphony, as well as to effectively sum up his lifelong fascination with ecclesiastical chants. In the first dance, he quotes the opening theme of his First Symphony, itself derived from motifs characteristic of Russian church music. In the finale he quotes both the Dies Irae and the chant 'Blessed be the Lord' (Blagosloven yesi, Gospodi) from his All-Night Vigil.
From Wikipedia: Tugan Taymourazovitch Sokhiev (Ossetian: Сохиты Таймуразы фырт Тугъан / Soxity Tajmurazy fyrt Tuhan, Russian: Туга́н Таймура́зович Сохиев, born 1977, Vladikavkaz, Ossetia) is a Russian-Ossetian conductor.
Sokhiev began piano studies at age 7. He first conducted at age 17, inspired by Anatoly Briskin, the conductor of the North Ossetia State Philharmonic Orchestra. He subsequently attended the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he was one of the last students of Ilya Musin before the latter's death in 1999. Sokhiev's first opera as a conductor was in a production of La bohème in Iceland.
From Wikipedia: The Berlin Philharmonic (German: Berliner Philharmoniker), is an orchestra based in Berlin, Germany and is consistently ranked as one of the best orchestras in the world.
In 2006, ten European media outlets voted the Berlin Philharmonic number three on a list of 'top ten European Orchestras', after the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, while in 2008 it was voted the world's number two orchestra in a survey among leading international music critics organized by the British magazine Gramophone (behind the Concertgebouw). The BPO supports several chamber music ensembles.

Беслан. Помни / Beslan. Remember (english & español subs)
- когда-то государство допустило ошибки, которые привели к беде;

Being Rock in South Ossetia
When he was young Alan Parastaev used to play in a band. His group started in Tskhinval’s school number 6, later upgrading to an older audience at South Ossetia’s Pedagogical University when they took the name of Tsiferblat. Their repertoire was mainly pop, The Beatles and the likes, branching to the popular rock like the Guns ‘n Roses’. They ventured into composing their own music and dressed in all-black outfit, replicating the punk trend.

Russia (Russian: Росси́я, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), or the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a transcontinental country in Eastern Europe and North Asia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), it is, by a considerable margin, the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 146.79 million people as of 2019, including Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. However, Russia recognizes two more countries that border it, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which are internationally recognized as parts of Georgia.
Russia's economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in 2018.[41] Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world,[42] making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally.[43][44] The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction.[45] Russia is a great power as well as a regional power and has been characterised as a potential superpower. It is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and an active global partner of ASEAN,[46][47][48] as well as a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the G20, the Council of Europe, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the International Investment Bank (IIB) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as being the leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and one of the five members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), along with Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Terek Cossacks
The Terek Cossack Host (Russian: Терское казачье войско) was a Cossack host created in 1577 from free Cossacks who resettled from the Volga to the Terek River. The local aboriginal Terek Cossacks joined this Cossack host later. In 1792 it was included in the Caucasus Line Cossack Host and separated from it again in 1860, with the capital of Vladikavkaz. In 1916 the population of the Host was 255,000 within an area of 1.9 million desyatinas.
Many of the early members of the Terek Cossacks were Ossetians.

Poverty in wealthy Russia - From Moscow to Magadan
Russia is a nation going through a big change. Oil prices have provided for an unprecedented wealth and the rapid economic growth associated with it. But there are still large parts of Russia that do not look like it at all. Wealth for everyone?
Original title: Bergen van geweld
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Caucasus mountain military exercise global force Russia Georgia army drills 高加索山地軍事演習環球力量
Russian defense and interior ministry troops have each staged large-scale military exercises, one after another. Military drills take place across Russia practically year-round, but what was interesting about a recent series of exercises is that they were conducted in the mountainous regions of the North Caucasus. Russia’s borders with Georgia and Azerbaijan pass through the Caucasus Mountains, raising the question of whether these two countries are somehow linked to Russia’s future moves.
In mid-March, three-day command post exercises were held in Stavropol region and North Ossetia. Over 2,000 military communications specialists participated in the exercises, and about 500 pieces of special equipment were used (Kavkazsky Uzel, March 17; see EDM, March 24). Two weeks later, on March 31, the press service of the Southern Federal District announced that command post exercises were again being held in North Ossetia, this time with the participation of an anti-aircraft missile brigade based in Vladikavkaz. The exercises involved over 250 soldiers, over 50 pieces of military equipment and Su-25SM attack aircraft. The brigade’s management teams and unit designations were put in a state of high alert. The brigade then marched 150 kilometers to the area of Sernovodskoe in the Stavropol region, where they practiced skills necessary for combat operations (Mil.ru, March 31).
A day later, the Russian media announced that even larger Russian army exercises had taken place in South Ossetia, involving personnel from the Russian military base in South Ossetia, other Russian forces and South Ossetian armed groups. More than 800 Russian soldiers and about 200 pieces of military equipment were used (Pravoslav-voin.info, April 1). They were supported in the exercises by the air defense forces of the Southern Military District, along with Russian forces based in Armenia that included Mi-24 helicopters, MiG-29 jets and air defense systems (RT, April 3).
Earlier this week, military sources announced that military reconnaissance troops had also begun holding exercises. According to the sources, 250 soldiers from mechanized infantry units of the Southern Military District and the Black Sea Fleet launched exercises in North Ossetia’s Darial Gorge. The Southern Military District spans both the North Caucasian Federal Districts and the Southern Federal District (RIA Novosti, April 7). According to the press service of the Southern Military District, the units will operate behind the lines of a simulated enemy for two months. Under conditions close to actual combat, the military will practice rock climbing, crossing spaces through water and air, setting up observation outposts, reconnaissance ambushes, raids and other actions (Kavkazsky Uzel, April 7). The press service specifically mentioned that the military reconnaissance troops would learn how to seal off areas where illegal armed formations are located, destroy subversive groups, and locate weapons caches and ammunition in the highlands and forests. Also, Russian soldiers practiced operating as part of assault groups in urban areas to eliminate militant bases, rescue hostages, and capture buildings and infrastructure.
