Middleton-in-Teesdale is a small market town in County Durham, in England. It is situated on the north side of Teesdale between Eggleston and Newbiggin, a few miles to the north-west of Barnard Castle. The settlement is surrounded by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Middleton is administered by Durham County Council. It is part of the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which has been represented in parliament by Helen Goodman (Labour Party) since 2005. It is in the North East England region, which serves as a constituency for the European Parliament. The local police force is Durham Constabulary.
The small market town in Upper Teesdale expanded in the early 19th century when the London Lead Company moved its northern headquarters there from Blanchland in Northumberland. Much of the architecture from its days as a company town is still clearly visible. This includes Middleton House, formerly the headquarters of the company, the school (which is now an outdoor centre) and some company houses.
A fountain was erected in the town in 1877 to honour Robert Walton Bainbridge, superintendent of the London Lead Mining Company. Middleton served as the terminus of a railway line from Barnard Castle until this was closed as part of the Beeching Axe. Middleton also has links to the early Co-operative Society and may pre-date the Rochdale Pioneers. There are also many early Methodist chapels.
On 20 June 1939, a British American Air Services De Havilland Dragon Rapide (Registration:G-AERE) flying from Heston Aerodrome to Newcastle Airport crashed at Forest-in-Teesdale near Middleton-in-Teesdale. The weather was bad and the aircraft was flying low. The accident killed all three passengers and crew on board.
Middleton is on the Pennine Way about 9 miles from High Force. Dominating the moors to the south side of the village is the Scots-Pine-covered tumulus of Kirkcarrion, one of Teesdale's major Bronze Age burial sites.

I almost became stranded on the 15% gradient hill whilst leaving Nenthead. I made it to the summit, as very little traffic was on the road or I was camping out for the evening.

High Force Teesdale Circular Day Hiking Durham Northern Pennines England UK
This was the first day hiking trip myself and my partner Anne undertook on our hiking holiday in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, Durham, England, UK in June 2010.
To sum up, this moderate day hiking was a great introduction to the Teesdale area. It was along clear, well marked paths, including a solidly surfaced section of The Pennine Way. There was a moderate amount of ascent and one section which has a tendency to be a little boggy. We also visited two lovely waterfalls, Low Force and High Force.

Teesdale is a dale, or valley, of the east side of the Pennines in County Durham, England. Large parts of Teesdale fall within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the second largest AONB in England and Wales.
Stanhope, County Durham - 22nd February, 2012
Stanhope (pronounced in the regional dialect Stanup or Stan'ope) is a small market town in County Durham, in England. It is situated on the River Wear between Eastgate and Frosterley on the north east side of Weardale. The A689 trans-Pennine road meets the B6278 road from Barnard Castle to Shotley Bridge here.
The civil parish of Stanhope has a population of 4,519 in 2001, and also includes Rookhope, Westgate, St John's Chapel, Ireshopeburn, Wearhead, Cowshill, Cornriggs, Eastgate, Frosterley all on the A689 road, along with Crawleyside, Hill End and White Kirkley. The parish was formerly much larger, with an area of 221 km². It shares some land in common with the neighbouring Wolsingham civil parish.
Stanhope is surrounded by moorland in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - the second largest of the current 40 AONBs in England and Wales.
Stanhope is also the current terminus of the Weardale Railway. However Trains do no longer run regularly to Frosterley and Wolsingham because of lack of income. Features of interest include a petrified tree stump in the churchyard, the Durham Dales Centre which incorporates a tea room, tourist information and craft shops, a ford with stepping stones for pedestrians, the eighteenth century Stanhope Castle in the centre of the town stands on the possible site of a medieval castle.

Wolsingham & The Weardale Way, North Pennines - 30 March 2015
A 7¾ mile round trip from Wolsingham, following the south bank of the River Wear west towards Frosterley. From Frosterley the route then heads south climbing Sunnyside Edge. Turning east the route then joins the Weardale Way for just over a mile before descending back towards Wolsingham via Towdy Potts and Ashes Farm.
