SVALBARD Museum + NORTH POLE Museum = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #4
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town in the Svalbard Islands archipelago has two museums to display an extensive insight into the local geography, history and geology.
The Svalbard Museum showcases how this historically rich area of resources and animal hunting, resulted in the unique 1920 Svalbard Treaty. This international agreement ceded ownership of these islands to Norway though with special migration and taxation provisions.
Across the street, the more specific North Pole Expedition Museum contains many artifacts, newspapers and histories about the early days of Polar expeditions. The museum also details the efforts of the 1928 Search and Rescue that, to date, has been the largest Arctic Search and Rescue mission, even 90 years later.

Formerly called the Spitsbergen Airship Museum, it was created by Svalbard veteran and arctic guide Stefano Poli, who’s been living and working in Longyearbyen for 20 years. Stefano is a passionate expert of polar exploration and he’s been on an exploration trip in the North of Svalbard, on the racks of the ITALIA Airship rescue expeditions on land.

Svalbard and Jan Mayen Drone Flight: Longyearbyen is a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norways Svalbard archipelago. This Arctic town is known for its views of the Northern Lights. The modern Svalbard Museum chronicles the regions natural and cultural history. It includes a stuffed polar bear. Live bears can occasionally be seen in the area. The North Pole Expeditions Museum recounts early efforts to reach the pole by air. Longyearbyen is on Adventfjorden Bay, which can be crossed by boat to reach Hiorthfjellet Mountains trails. Nearby, the Gruve 3 coal mine depicts Svalbards mining history. The underground Svalbard Global Seed Vault preserves backups of the worlds seeds in the name of food security. Husky-dog sleds and snowmobiles set off from Longyearbyen for trips farther afield to places like Isfjord Radio, a former transmission station with views overlooking the Arctic Ocean. Boat trips with fishing are also possible, reaching destinations like the walrus colony on the island of Prins Karls Forland. [wikipedia // Google]

A short trip to Longyearbyen, one of the northernmost inhabited areas in the world & Pyramiden, the abandoned town just 2 weeks before the start of the polar nights. The scenery, architecture & way of life was indeed a world apart. Even though we were here for just a few days, we could tell that life here was not for the faint of heart but was ultimately rewarding in its own right. An eye opener!
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. One of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, it's known for its rugged, remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra sheltering polar bears, Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes.

Pyramiden is a Russian settlement and coal-mining community on the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, Pyramiden was closed in 1998 and has since remained largely abandoned with most of its infrastructure and buildings still in place.

More about Svalbard: The archipelago is a Norwegian territory in the high-Arctic. The islands lie roughly 650-miles south of the North Pole and are home to more Polar bears than people (around 3,000 Polar bears). Visiting this unique polar environment offers a travel experience that is truly unique - welcome to a winter wonderland plucked straight from the realm of a fantasy novel. Svalbard has been thrust into the world's limelight due to the now famous Global Seed Vault (or doomsday vault) and scientists based here are leading co-operative research into global climate change at UNIS (Svalbard University). However people have been living and working in Svalbard for centuries from whalers to trappers and more recently coal miners. Visitors can learn about this incredible human history at interactive museums and even visits to coal mines and old trapper's cabins gaining a real understanding.
Longyearbyen, the main settlement on Spitsbergen is the world's most northern town and since commercial flights have opened the door to tourism has become a hub for the more intrepid and adventurous traveler. Travelers from all over the world come in search of a incredible polar experiences such as Polar bear sightings and multi-day adventures in the the polar wilderness that are impossible to find elsewhere. During the summer months the islands are blessed with 24-hours daylight and become the temporary home to hundreds of thousands of visiting birds - a birders paradise awaits! The first serious attempt to use airplanes in the Arctic occurred in 1923 when Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen--who in 1911 had been the first person to reach the South Pole--tried to fly from Wainwright, Alaska to Spitsbergen with fellow Norwegian Oscar Omdal. Unfortunately, Amundsen and Omdal's aircraft became damaged and they had to abandon their journey. On May 9, 1926, Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett attempted a flight over the North Pole in a Fokker F-VII Tri-motor called the Josephine Ford. This flight went from Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and back to its take-off airfield. Byrd claimed to have reached the Pole. From 1926 until 1996, there were doubts, defenses, and heated controversy about whether or not Byrd actually reached the North Pole. In 1958 Norwegian-American aviator and explorer Bernt Balchen cast doubt on Byrd's claim based on his extensive personal knowledge of the airplane's speed. In 1971 Balchen speculated that Byrd had simply circled aimlessly while out of sight of land.

My four nights stay in Svalbard during the month of June '19. I was able to experience the polar summer for the first time. Svalbard is actually a Norwegian archipelago between the mainland Norway and the North Pole at 78 degree N. The midnight sun is the highlight of the area during this phase. I had booked a boat cruise 46:59 during my stay to visit the abandoned town owned by Russia, Pyramiden 55:28. The Nordenskiöld glacier 54:22 proved to be a unique spot for spotting polar bears and seals. Dog Sledding 1:43:26 although more prominent during the winter ice and snow, it was worth a try on wagon wheel carts to get the gist of it. I also managed to book a separate tour in the coal mines where the guide 1:14:55 gave us a very informative session on explaining how the coal mining work was typically carried out in Longyearbyen. A quick visit to the Svalbard museum 1:12:29 helped me to gather some insight on the 400 year old history of the settlement along with types of plants and animals that existed there.

SVALBARD HIGH ARCTIC CYCLING AUGUST 2016 (PART 1) Longyearbyen
A couple of weeks ago I made yet another trip to Svalbard to do some camping and just get a fix of my arctic paradise, while I was there this time I did something I had never done in previous visits, I borrowed a bicycle and had a ride out to Adventdalen. I only rode about 10km or so but it was such a nice day and the scenery was so perfectly arctic that it was enough to get quite a bit of Go Pro footage and some good still shots. Here is the first segment of the Go Pro footage in 2X speed. I hope it still reveals a bit of the landscape up there, this first segment is just riding from Longyearbyen Camping to the Polar Expedition Museum at the edge of town. The music is one of my original Soul Projector tracks titled Mind Sweep. Enjoy !

In early August, 2006, the Russian nuclear icebreaker Yamal voyaged to the North Pole and back. Along the way, Dr. P.J. Capelotti records the expedition base camps of Frederick Jackson at Cape Flora, Fridtjof Nansen at Cape Norway, and Walter Wellman at Cape Tegetthoff.
