Ecuador - Galápagos North Seymour Island
The Galápagos Islands, some 1000 km west of mainland Ecuador, are a unique habitat that inspired Charles Darwin to his evolution theory. Because most wildlife has no natural enemies it is possible to approach animals very closely and to see birds breeding on the flat, open ground. This video covers our visit to Isla Seymour Norte. Because we were in the breeding season we could see the frigatebirds at their most beautiful.
We visited Ecuador on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our playlist

North Seymour day tour - Galapagos, Ecuador
Jan 29, 2018: Day trip from Puerto Ayora to N. Seymour. Bus to north end of island to board boat. First stop was Bachas Beach (still on Isla Santa Cruz). Terrible snorkeling... yet small surf. Suspect it rarely is good visibility. Then north to Seymour for a very thorough nature hike. Almost too much for amateur birders. All in all... an over-hyped snorkel location, with an interesting yet long nature walk. Would be a good tour for $60 pp... but not worth the 155$ we paid. Worst day tour value of our 3 weeks in Ecuador.
The next day we did Isla Santa Fe... now that was some good snorkeling. Short video here...
Puerto Ayora + Day Trip To Las Bachas & North Seymour Island
There are many things to do in Puerto Ayora, including a day trip to Las Bachas Beach and North Seymour Island -- both major highlights when visiting the Galapagos Islands!
(Which I was fortunate enough to visit thanks to Andando Tours sponsoring my trip!)
The above is especially true if you want to enjoy white sand beaches and turquoise waters while also seeing adorable Galapagos wildlife like sea lions, blue-footed boobies, iguanas and more!
Which, by the way, you’ll see a lot of in this video! ;)
You can visit both on a day trip from Santa Cruz Island — though note there are also many things to do in Puerto Ayora, the main town on Santa Cruz, as well as nearby.
A few places highlighted in this Galapagos travel video include:
-Ikala Galapagos Hotel
-German Beach / Playa de los Alemanes
-Angermeyer Waterfront Inn
-Puerto Ayora Pier
-Charles Binford Street (amazing seafood!)
-Las Bachas Beach
-North Seymour Island

The mystery of the cursed Baltra island ///// অভিশপ্ত বাল্ট্রা দ্বীপের রহস্য
Baltra Island, or Isla Baltra, is a small island of the Galápagos Islands. Also known as South Seymour (named after Lord Hugh Seymour), Baltra is a small flat island located near the center of the Galápagos. It was created by geological uplift. The island is very arid and vegetation consists of salt bushes, prickly pear cactus and palo santo trees.
The ultimate origin of the name Baltra for the island is unknown. Baltra is a Spanish surname (particularly Chilean), so it is presumably named after a person. The name is first found in print in the 1927 edition of the South America Pilot by the British Admiralty; it was added after the 1915 edition, but the document explaining the source has been lost. The name is sometimes incorrectly believed to be an acronym used by the US military, though the term predates the US base.
During World War II, Baltra was established as a United States Army Air Force base. Crews stationed at Baltra patrolled the eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and protected the Panama Canal.
After the war, the facilities were given to the government of Ecuador. Today the island continues as an official Ecuadorian military base. The foundations of buildings and other remains of the US base including the old airfield can still be seen on the island.
Until 1986, Seymour Airport was the only airport serving the Galápagos. Now, two airports receive flights from the continent, the other being San Cristóbal Airport on San Cristóbal Island. Private planes flying to the islands must fly to Baltra as it is the only airport with overnight facilities for planes.
On arriving at Baltra, all visitors are transported by bus to one of two docks. The first dock is located in a small bay where the boats cruising the Galápagos await passengers. The second is a ferry dock, which connects Baltra to the island of Santa Cruz via the Itabaca Channel.
Constructions for a larger, modernized airport began in 2011, and as of early 2013 it has started operation and the old buildings are being dismantled. The new airport is being run under a 15-year concession by ECOGAL, a subsidiary of the Argentinian group Corporación América and has been promoted as the first ecological airport worldwide due to its reduced energy consumption for lighting and ventilation, rainwater recovery, waste recycling, etc.
Baltra is currently not within the boundaries of the Galápagos National Park. The Galápagos Land Iguana is the subject of an active re-introduction campaign on the island; they became extinct on Baltra in 1954. However, in the early 1930s, Captain G. Allan Hancock had translocated a population of Galápagos Land Iguanas from Baltra to North Seymour Island, a smaller island just a few hundred meters north of Baltra. The iguanas survived and became the breeding stock for the successful Charles Research Station captive breeding program. During the 1980s, iguanas from North Seymour were brought to the Darwin Research Station as part of this project and, in the 1990s, land iguanas were reintroduced to Baltra. As of 1997, scientists counted 97 iguanas living on strict Baltra, 13 of which were born on the islands. It is not uncommon to see iguanas either crossing the main road or on the runway at the airport.
