This Is BIG BEAR LAKE San Bernardino Mountains California
Pleace excuse all the human noise, but this was filmed on Christmas Day when everybody and their brother climb up the mountains in this yearly ritual in Southern California. Big Bear Lake is a reservoir in the San Bernardino Mountains, in San Bernardino County, California, United States. At a surface elevation of 6,750 ft (2,060 m), it has an east-west length of approximately 7 mi (11 km) and is approximately 2.5 mi (4.0 km) at its widest measurement, though the lake's width mostly averages a little more than 1 mi (1.6 km). These approximations are based on the lake having an optimum retainable water level. At dam's end Big Bear measures its deepest water at 72 ft (22 m). It is a completely snow-fed lake, having no other means of tributary or mechanical replenishment. Tis region was originally inhabited by the Serrano Indians and it's original name was Yuhaviat. The lake was originally just a marsh that was impounded to form the lake mainly to provide irrigation down the the mountain in the valley below at Redlands California. Camp Review: Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, Menifee, California
April 9, 2019 - For the past ten days we have camped at Wilderness Lakes RV Resort in Menifee, California.
This Los Angeles area Thousand Trails campground is huge. With over 80 acres and 523 campsites, we felt like we were in a small city instead of a campground. Of course, with size come noise, and we did find the noise levels bothersome, especially over the weekends with non-stop cars and many neighbors playing their music at above average levels. Things were quieter during the week as almost a third of the camp vacated.
Sites spacing is a bit tight. Since the camp is a first come, first served, even with reservations, I would recommend arrival for mid-week when the camp is less full. A variety of pull through and back in sites, some with shade and others with water access are available.
Amenities were good. There are nine bathhouses throughout the park, each with several toilets and shower stalls. Other than daily cleaning crews, there never seemed to be a wait for its use.
There are three laundry rooms in the park each with 4 washers and dryers and a respectable rate of $2.00 per was load for washer or dryer.
Two canals and a pond offer fishing, which does require a California fishing license. Over the two weeks I do not recall seeing anyone actually catch a fish, but we were told they periodically stocks channel catfish.
Sports enthusiasts will love the range of activities. Shuffleboard, a Fitness Center, Mini Golf, Playground, Volleyball, Basketball, Horseshoes, Tennis Courts, Pickleball and even a Softball field are located on site. A trail around the park is just over a mile in length for walkers and joggers.
The workout room is small, offering a few treadmills and other gym equipment, but is convenient for a quick morning workout. Door codes are granted on a case by case basis to ensure limited access for serious fitness participants.
Two nicely sized swimming pools, one for general use, and a smaller Adult only use and separated on be blocks in the park to allow more solitude or fun as you prefer.
A general Store on site is very well stocked with a vast variety of food and camp supplies. It is open five days a week. I estimate prices were roughly 30% higher than city prices, but, since the closest grocery store is less than two miles away, you have options.
The camp claims that six air television channels are available including the major networks. We were only able to get 4 changes, all of which were shipping channels or Korean television channels. Cable TV is not available.
Los Angeles attractions can be reached in just over an hour drive, or via metro rail which is 20 minutes north. A ninety-minute drive allows access to San Diego attractions as well. The San Bernardino Forest, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and the Cleveland National Forest are all within an hour of this camp location as well.
Verizon cell signal was good with 4G and LTE coverage at 3 bars. A paid Wi-Fi service in the park offers standard and streaming levels beginning at $4 a day. Free Wi-Fi can be found at the community buildings but was very week and congested.
Regrettably I have to report that much of the camp has a very putrid smell around it. It seems to be a combination of stale water, sewage, and what I believe is a close by farm operation for chicken eggs. We were fortunate that the smell in our campsite was limited, but a short walk will introduce you to a variety of odors throughout the camp. In farness we were hitting high eighty-degree days, so it may have just been heat related.
Overall, we rate the campground as very average, with a need for some updating and odor control to return it to a desirable location to stay. The staff is very nice and helpful, and the cleaning crews are active, but the age is showing in the buildings. The sites are nice but could stand to be spaced further apart. The weekends felt more like a tailgating event over that of a camping experience.
Thanks for watching. We appreciate your feedback and experiences in your camp stays. Please share your comments below, and don’t forget to subscribe to see our latest camp reviews.

South Fork Campground in California
Due to winter storms most of the mountain roads were still closed so there was no access to many of the free campsites available. South Fork Campground was still open and at 4500 feet so it was worth trying out.
It turns out the campground is a zoo on the weekends but on weekdays it is incredibly peaceful and has easy access to Palmdale and offers many hiking trails. It is totally worth coming for a place to stay. That stream is also fantastic for cleaning off!
