North Sydney And Sydney Mines Cape Breton Nova Scotia (June 16/09)
North Sydney And Sydney Mines Cape Breton Nova Scotia (Music By Dave Matthews Band You And Me)
North Sydney (2001 pop.: 6,775) is a community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Located on the north side of Sydney Harbour, along the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island, North Sydney is an important port in Atlantic Canada as it is the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry service. It acts as the marine link for the Trans-Canada Highway to the island of Newfoundland, which is why North Sydney's nickname is called The Gateway To Newfoundland.
Marine Atlantic ferries currently operate from North Sydney's terminal to the ports of Port aux Basques and Argentia. The company is one of the largest employers in the area.
History
North Sydney emerged as a major shipbuilding centre in the early 1800s building many brigs and brigantines for the English market and later moving on to larger Barques and, in 1851, the full rigged ship Lord Clarendon, the largest wooden ship ever built in Cape Breton. Wooden shipbuilding declined in the 1860s but the same decade saw the arrival of increasing numbers of steamships drawn to North Sydney for bunker coal. By 1870 it was the fourth largest port in Canada dealing in ocean-going vessels, drawn for coal and due to the fact that The Western Union cable office had been established here in 1875. The railroad came to Cape Breton Island in 1891. At this time there were 2,513 people in North Sydney, compared to 2,417 in Sydney.
In 1898 North Sydney was chosen by the Reid-Newfoundland Company as the Canadian mainland terminal for a ferry service to Newfoundland; in June of that year the SS Bruce sailed from Port Aux Basques, it was the first ship to make that run.
World Wars
During the first and second World wars, North Sydney played an important role in the relay of information from Europe to both Ottawa and Washington. North Sydney was home to a Western Union Cable office. It was here where coded messages were sent from overseas then relayed on to the rest of North America.
On the morning of November 10, 1918, the office received a top-secret coded message from Europe. It stated that effective at 11 am the next day (November 11, 1918) all fighting would cease on land, sea and in the air.
Therefore the people of North Sydney, in particular Mrs. Annie Butler Smith, were the first to know about the end of the Great War. It is reported that on the night on November 10, 1918, over 200 servicemen celebrated by marching through the streets of the town to celebrate the end of the war, one day before the rest of the world knew.
Sydney Mines (2001 population: 7,312) is a former town in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Sydney Mines Founded in 1784 and incorporated as a town in 1889, has a rich history in coal production, although mining activity has now ceased.
Geography
Sydney Mines in Nova ScotiaSydney Mines lies immediately northeast of North Sydney and faces Sydney across Sydney Harbour. Sydney Mines was once a major coal-producing community. Mining began locally in 1766, and in 1830 systematic operations were undertaken. One of the area mines extended about 5 miles (8 km) out under the sea. The last mine was closed in 1975.
As of 1991, the population was 7,551. The current demographics map Sydney Mines at 95% caucasian (White), and 5% Jamaican (Black).
Sydney Mines is on the northern side of Sydney Harbor, near the mouth. It was earlier known as the Mines due to the coal mines abundant nearby. Although mining has been carried on since 1724, the first shaft for the General Mining Association in Sydney Mines was sunk in 1830. Manufacturing enterprises included corrugated steel culverts and the British Canadian Co-operative Society Limited, operating a dairy and a bakery.

Seaplane North Sydney Cape Breton
Seaplane Replica To Take Eternal Flight
North Sydney (NS) - The community of North Sydney honoured its rich military history on the occasion of the 65th year marking the end of World War II and the Battle of the Atlantic when a scale model of a PBY-5A Canso seaplane and six interpretative panels are unveiled in Munroe Park during a dedication event on May 2, 2010.
Kelly Beach (now Munro Park) was established by the United States Navy during World War I for the protection of convoys that sailed out of Sydney Harbour. North Sydney's seaplane base was originally located at Indian Beach, east of this location; however, in 1918, the base was moved to Kelly Beach, a site it occupied for the remainder of the war. During this period, a number of records were established by aircraft flying from Kelly Beach. These include the first seaplane flight over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and the first non-stop flight from North Sydney to Halifax.
In August, 1939, as war approached once again, No. 8 (GP) Squadron was transferred from RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ottawa, to the reactivated RCAF Station at Kelly Beach. During the course of World War II, close to one dozen squadrons and detachments of the Royal Canadian Air Force flew out of Kelly Beach, North Sydney.

*Description*
Mission Statement:
We believe all should be given equal opportunity to overcome the difficulties in life. Our goal is to inspire stability and sustainability by providing programs, mentorship, events, and resources for the youth and families in our area.
Where does the name “Five Eleven” come from?
FIVE ELEVEN is a reference to a rock climbing level system called the Yosemite Decimal System. At the time of the system's creation, 5.11 was the highest class and difficulty level in rock climbing, best described by author Don Graydon:
After thorough inspection, you conclude this move is obviously impossible; however,
occasionally, someone actually accomplishes it
We believe this speaks volumes about the state of our community, as well as simply what it's like being a teenager - this might be the most difficult climb, it may seem impossible, but maybe together, we can overcome it.
Our Idea:
Five Eleven Youth and Family Center is a non-profit, non-religious organization owned by Third Day Grace Ministries in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. We’re a small group of people who know that the Northside is in crisis. We know the studies and we believe that it is time to make a positive change in our community. Our beautiful community has experienced far too much loss at the hands of drugs, mental illness, and poverty and it is time for it to stop. We want to be a preventative resource, giving hope and healing to our town.
Our goal is to have a centre that is open 7 days a week with free or affordable opportunities and activities for all school-aged youth and their families. All children deserve equal opportunity to succeed regardless of their background, be it race, religion, ability, gender, or sexuality - we encourage youth to express themselves and teach them life skills needed to attain a healthy and stable lifestyle.
We believe that youth are the backbone of our town and our society. When we provide resources and a positive place for youth to feel safe, it can change their world - and ours. We believe that people are a product of their community and that when treated with dignity from a young age they become more confident in their ability to learn, and grow into successful community members.
With over 500 youth in walking distance of the centre our goal is to reach between 200 and 300 youth per week through our many programs and drop-in hours. We currently have over 120 youth registered with over 40 volunteers and we have only been open since July 2018. We expect this number to increase drastically over the next couple of months as we continue to launch new programming.
We also have a sustainability plan in place as we have great office space that we can rent out to local community groups or small public businesses to subsidize our bills and pay a full-time director. We know that having a person in a paid position makes a community group thrive and continue to grow, and in the future hope to work with students as a placement opportunity, co-op programs, and eventually be able to hire more people.
The Aviva Community Fund will help us finish renovations on our building - providing us with heat pumps, paint, and updated lighting fixtures. More than that, it will help us bring in the supplies we need to launch many of our programs. Providing washers and dryers and stoves for our life-skills area, music gear for our music program, mountains of craft supplies for an after school program, computers and games for our video-game/computer lounge, rock-climbing installation, a teen crisis center, and so much more.
With your support - we can win this! Please vote for us & help us change our little, beautiful seaside town.

Reporter granted rare access inside secretive North Korea | 60 Minutes Australia
After months of negotiations, Nine News correspondent Tom Steinfort was given rare permission to travel to North Korea. There he worryingly discovered a country whose people are ready for conflict, and bizarrely, almost gleeful that a consequence of it could be the end of the world. 60 Minutes Australia (2017)

A Day in Sydney-Cape Breton- With Live Music
This was my day in Sydney, NS (Cape Breton Island) on Thursday 9/11/14 (Celebrity Summit NE/Canada Cruise). It includes lots of live music at both the terrific Spirit of the Fiddle show as well as at lunch at The Governor's Pub. There are also photos of the wonderful old buildings in the town. I did not add any extra recorded music for the stills so as not to alter the mood. The running time is about 32 minutes.

North America in deep freeze as Australia nearly breaks heat record
'영하 70도' 한파에 떠는 북미…79년만의 폭염에 끓는 호주
A record-breaking deep freeze has gripped much of North America, with temperatures as low as minus 73 degrees Celsius after wind chill recorded.
And on the other side of the world, parts of Australia are experiencing their worst heatwave in decades.
Park Se-young has more.
Temperatures in the northeastern United States and Canada have dipped far into the negatives, … causing cancelled flights and life-threatening frostbite.
Mount Washington in New Hampshire on Sunday claimed the second spot for the world's coldest ever recorded temperature... with a wind chill of minus 73-point-three degrees Celsius.
Burlington, Vermont was at minus 18 degrees with a wind chill of minus 34 degrees, while Philadelphia and New York were freezing at minus 13 degrees. This kind of cold can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as ten minutes.
The snow and cold have been blamed for at least 18 deaths and thousands of cancelled flights over the past few days.
Fortunately, the US National Weather Service says the weather will get warmer this week.
Meanwhile, the other side of the world is reaching near-record highs.
Sydney sweltered through its hottest day in nearly 80 years on Sunday, …as the mercury soared to 47-point-three degrees in its metropolitan area.
A total fire ban was issued for the greater Sydney region, …while officials at Sydney's international tennis tournament sent players off the court after temperatures surpassed 40 degrees late Sunday morning.
A 2016 report by the Bureau of Meteorology has found that Australia's average surface air and sea temperatures had risen by around one degree since 1910, …and that (quote) the duration, frequency and intensity of extreme heat events has increased.

The Truth About the Masonic Lodge
The Masons, aka Shriners aka Freemasons.
Are they a harmless bunch of old guys on mini-bikes in fez hats who run hospitals? Not quite. In this video, Patrick Coffin gives a quick history of the Masonic Lodge, what they believe, and why Catholics cannot participate in their occultic organization.
Modern Freemasonry started in 1717 in England during the dawn of the Enlightenment. It’s a hodgepodge of new age Rosicrucianism, astrology, theosophy, and traditions of cultic groups such as the Druids, Mithars, Egyptian priesthood.
Freemasonry also involves the taking of occultic oaths, keeping the truth of Freemasonry a secret, indifferentism, and the subversion of the Church and the state. Members also open themselves to gruesome deaths if they reveal the inner secrets of “the Lodge.”
Popes since Clement XII in 1738 have said the same thing: Catholics cannot be Masons.
