Northbank Community Garden Open Day.
Northbank Community Garden is located at 100 Northbank Rd. Bellingen.
Welcome to the garden! This is a place for community, the arts and food! We encourage sustainability, reusing and recycling and local food production.
Established in 2008, the garden is an organic non-profit grass-roots venture. It features a large area designated as communal beds, a market garden (the profits of which help to sustain the garden), a chook run, greenhouse, cacti collection and a communal gathering space with kitchen.
The gardeners recently planted about 30 citrus and olive trees, with several other food trees growing aswell. The next projects for the gardeners include further irrigation, camping grounds, the instalation of a teepee/childrens space and a sculpture competition.
Visitors to the garden are asked to be respectful and gentle. The garden sustains itself by hard work and the generosity and honesty of the community. Contributions are made in the form of donations, materials or by working in the garden. join us on Facebook

Bellingen EYE Living Food Garden
In August 2013 the amazing Bellingen EYE crew came together with local artist Lunci, landscape designer Charlie Brennan, Kombu Wholefoods, Bellingen Chamber of Commerce and Bellingen Shire Council to create a living food mural and garden outside Kombu Wholefoods in Church St, Bellingen.

Also BYO food and drinks and rug to have a picnic. See you all there! (or in case of rain-The Memorial Hall across the road) Parking available at the Showgrounds where the Organic Growers Markets will be happening so shop and eat first then join the Rally :)

The fight for our food!!
We will gather outside the Bellingen Council Chambers at the park Maam Gaduying, (meeting place). In case of bad weather we will meet at the Bellingen Memorial Hall across from the Naam Gaduying Park. Tell your friend...tell every body...
Reasons why we gather:
Environmental Risks -- There has been inadequate testing of the effect that GM crops can have on the other species due to crossing of genes between kingdoms. Basically, GM crops can contaminate the ecology. If that happens the product cannot be recalled.
Health Risks -- There is still uncertainty regarding the safety of GM foods and consumers are cautious about eating them. The Australian regulatory framework (OGTR and FSANZ) does not do independent health testing instead they rely on the GM industry to provide information regarding the effects on health. This is a major conflict of interests.
Farmers Misled -- The benefits fail to live up to what's promised for example GM canola has been performing below average.
Coexistence Impossible -- Non-GM farmers are expected to prevent GM contamination, otherwise they run the risk of being sued for growing a patented crop and/or breaking contractual agreements if crops are contaminated.
Marketing -- Many export and domestic markets don't want to buy GM or GM contaminated crops. Farmers have a right and responsibility to provide non-GM crops. Furthermore, costs to supply the non-GM market are higher than GM partly due to management and testing against contamination.
Legislation -- No adequate Federal legislation exist to address concerns presented by farmers. The GM industry dominates plans for preparedness and coexistence. This is a clear conflicts of interest.
Patents -- GM crops patented by agribusiness are unique. They undermine the independence and rights of farmers leading to a dependency on a small number of agribusiness corporations. Contamination of non-GM crops can result in farmers being forced to pay patent royalties.
Herbicide Resistance -- Many GM crops are developed to be herbicide resistant. Weeds have developed resistance to the herbicide which has lead to an increased use of herbicide that GM proponents want to solve by using more toxic herbicides. The increase use of herbicides reduce surrounding biodiversity leading to increase in use of insecticides.
