Banlung, Cambodia. Ratanakiri Province.
Insight in to our two days spent in Banlung, North East Cambodia. We visited Yeak Laom lake, countless waterfalls, went jungle trekking and visited some minority communities furthur up the river.
The people there were fantastic and we can't wait to visit them all again some day.
Our home for the duration of our stay was the Tree Top Eco Lodge. We loved our time there and had our own log cabin in the trees, the resident Tokay Gecko wasn't too much trouble! :)

Video with images of tribal minorities in Ratanakiri a province in northeastern Cambodia at the border of Vietnam. Among the tribals are Kreung, Tompuon and Jarai. They live in the forests, the hills and the mountains in small isolated villages and practise shifting cultivation as well as hunting and collecting fruits. They still believe in spirits. These tribes have their own distinct language and customs, although today they dress as most other poor Cambodians and lack traditional clothing.
Ban Lung is a capital of Ratanakiri province with a regional market. Tribal women from surrounding villages are on their way to visit the market. They have a basket on their back to transport the goods they buy and sell on the market. East of Ban Lung near lake Yeak Lom is a small center with information on ethnic minorities in the province. It features a replica of some Kreung houses. At the age of fifteen the youngsters of the Kreung start building a stilted house next to the house of their beloved. In the evening they meet each other and when things go well they marry each other some time later.
Northeast of Ban Lung is a Jarai village in Andoung Meas district. The village has about twenty longhouses. The longhouses are built on stilts and contain several compartments occupied by matrilineally linked nuclear families. There are several hearths in each longhouse for these different households. Some Jarai villages have a community longhouse for communal activities. But it appears to be more usual for feasts and communal events to be held in family longhouses.
Dal is a small Tompuon village in Andoung Meas district northeast of Ban Lung. Just a few years ago the Tompuon inhabitants of Dal left their old village because of an epidemic disease. By burning and slashing the forest they create an open space where they build a new village. The houses are on wooden stilts, the roofs are covered with rotan, the walls are made of bamboo mats or twined bamboo strips and the floors rest on wooden girders. The shallow place beneath the house is used for storing wood or for wandering pigs and chickens.
At the shore of the Sesan river is a cemetery close to the village of Dal. Here family groups are buried side by side in the forest and there are effigies of the deceased. The tombs have a rectangular fence, a bamboo shed and two wooden statues. Each tomb contains household materials for the deceased to use in the afterlife like baskets, plates, bottles, pots and bowls. Some of these tombs date back many years and have been abandoned to the jungle.

Arakk Healing Ritual: Brao Group [Ratanakiri, Cambodia]
Bandcamp
In Cambodian villages, shamanic healers conduct ceremonies called Arakk to enter a trance state in which the cause of illness is revealed. The ceremony begins with a song that invites a spirit-world teacher to enter the shaman and preside over the ceremony. Once the cause of the illness is understood, the musicians play a special ending piece to thank the spirits and end the ceremony (Sam, Roongrüang et al. 1998:193–195). The songs give shape and form to the ceremony.
The Brao of Cambodia live in the highland of Northeast Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and the Vietnam. Brao people belong to the Mon-Khmer language group. The Brao people can be ofund in other names such as Kavey, Kravet, Lun, Love, Laveh and Montagnards.Br people are patriarchal society where men held to a higher status than the women of the family. The Brao people are very skillful with music playing gong from bossed gong to flat gongs including drums, zithers and bamboo flutes. Women are more pasionate with singing and dancing. The style of singing and dancing can be similar to other provinces and other ethnic groups of mainland southeast.

Northeast of Cambodia Where I Won't Be Found
Escape from the city for a while to Mundulkiri, Rothanakiri, and Kratie in the Northeast of Cambodia.^^ Make time for your productive life.
Kroeung Hill Tribe Villages have Unusual Daughter Houses, Cambodia
Banlung in Ratanakiri Province is the place for travelers to stay while visiting different minority hill tribe villages in Northeast Cambodia. One of the most interesting traditions is carried on by the Kroeung who build daughter / women / bachelor houses for their sons and daughters when they become 16-18 years old; daughter houses are the most common.
These little bamboo huts on stilts could be mistaken as a place to keep chickens but the daughter moves in and is allowed to receive male visitors during the night as long as father doesn't find out. Once caught, the couple must marry and the hut is allowed to disintegrate. The same tradition was carried on for young males but is now disappearing.
A short distance from this village was a round lava field surrounded by forest. There is a long legend about the field and why the surrounding forest is pristine; explanation is in the video.

Ou Reang district is a beautiful place and cold as it's mountains and hills surrounded with trees and waterfall. It's at Mondulkiri province in Cambodia. In this video, we hang out on the hill at Ou Reang district for a short while then the tribe walked his elephant along the way on the hills. We talked to him and took some pictures with him and his elephant. It was a lucky day to be able to see the elephant.

Lively Downtown Banlung in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia
Ratanakiri Province is located in Cambodia's far northeast, bordered by Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east, Mondolkiri to the south, and Stung Trend to the west. Banlung is the capital of this province and focal point for tourists to use as a base for traveling through the surrounding region. Banlung is small but filled with restaurants, guesthouses, and even had the luxurious Terres Rouges Boutique Lodge where we stayed.
Dinners, however, were eaten in downtown Banlung where 2 kilos/4.4 pounds of laundry costs twenty-five cents US and food is equally inexpensive. Banlung also had a lively market which included second hand goods, electronics, shops selling uncut gems (mined in this area) and items made by local minority tribes.
