Troublemaker Interview Series - Episode 10: Kathy Mullen in Hurst, Texas
We meet you in every city that we travel to, magicians – likeminded souls that we want to portrait as The Troublemakers.
We connected with our beloved Troublemaker Kathy Mullen over a year ago online, after she had seen the viral video to Grand Masquerade and was touched by the passion and authenticity of the performance. Kathy reached out to us, as we were looking for a place to stay along our Fall Tour of 2018 and welcomed us in her beautiful home in Hurst, Texas.
Our mission with these Troublemaker Lose Your Ties Series is to give each one of you a voice. Life is about exchange and sharing a picture. We believe all of you have a unique and individual connection to The Trouble Notes and therefore we want to digitally bring you a bit closer together, even though you all are spread around the world. We believe we can grow together and help each other overcome troubling moments. This project is the brainchild of our manager Stefanie Tendler, who is responsible for connecting our troubled universe. Since Stef’s main interest has always been cultural and artistic movement, she made Berlin her new home in 2011 and has been involved in numerous projects ever since. She has worked on photo exhibitions, music video shoots, film productions, experimental theatre as well as writing for the transatlantic blog station-station.com. This is how we met and layed the foundation for our relationship. As many of you the Lose Your Ties Theme also resonates with her, as she gave up her old career working in business travel to get a Bachelor of Arts in Publication and Communication and to eventually start her career as a photographer and tour manager for our group. Always attracted by the various forms of art and means of expressing oneself, she chose photography as a her own medium to capture the multi-facetted environments she encounters. She is now also responsible for documenting our tourlife.

Please Make Your Final Purchase - Sears' Last Christmas 2018
It is an eerie feeling that titans like Sears are now dying out and are no longer a standard.
My experiences with Sears range from my dad getting Craftsman tools and equipment to walking through to get into the main mall.
It is fitting to walk through my local location at Christmas time when it was booming in the past and now dying at the time of year it was booming.
Merry Christmas, everyone, hoping all of you loved this walk through memory lane.

Plaza Central (Six Flags Mall) Arlington, TX Under Demolition Process Jan 25, 2017
Just driving by Plaza Central which used to be Six Flags Mall in East Arlington, a very popular regional shopping mall in the 70s and 80s before The Parks at Arlington in South Arlington got popular after its opening in 1988 from what I heard. It's sad to see Six Flags Mall went down like its former competitor Forum 303 Mall just two miles south of it on 360.
Irving Mall is doing alright, but it's not like it used to be either.
My parents and I moved to Irving, TX in July 2003 and when we stopped at Six Flags Mall around Fall 2003, it was already on the decline by then. We came from Southwest Oklahoma City. My dad from Tulsa, OK. I used to live with my mom and grandma alone.
We used to hang out at Crossroads Mall (now Plaza Mayor) in Southeast Oklahoma City which is the closest regional shopping mall to our house in OKC. It was a very popular regional Mall in Southeast OKC, the other two located in North Central OKC a.k.a. Penn Square Mall and Northwest OKC a.k.a. which are both close to my second cousin home North OKC.
Years after we left OKC, Crossroads Mall started to decline combined several factors including gang activities, lack of substantial renovations, and the recession contributed to its decline. I also believe the lack of any development in East and Southeast OKC contributed to the decline of Crossroads. Most of the businesses developed very well nearby Moore and Northwest OKC.
We stopped by Crossroads Mall one time in December 2008. JCPenney and Macy's were gone. Only Dillard's and Steve & Barry's were still open and they already had signs up announcing they're closing their stores leaving Crossroads more than 50% vacant with the tenants and the stores together. Me and my mom predicted that by the end of 2009 they'd demolished Crossroads, but it turns out it still opened today as Playa Mayor, a Hispanic-oriented shopping center. Crossroads had went into foreclosure once and had went through several ownerships during its period of decline. I really hope Crossroads Mall doesn't go down completely like Six Flags really did and we don't know.
Some people hope Six Flags Mall might revived near the end of the 00s when the new Cowboys Stadium were constructed in North Arlington, but no Six Flags Mall just declined further and further. Six Flags was closed for a few years and re-developed and re-opened as a Hispanic-oriented shopping center as Plaza Central for short time from October 2014 to February 2016. A very similar approach Crossroads Mall in OKC did as Plaza Mayor. Though, it was still unsuccessful and now it is in the process of getting demolished by the City of Arlington.
Due to both the recession of 2007-2008 and the decline of the shopping mall culture in the United States, we seen decline in shopping malls like Six Flags Mall and Forum 303 Mall (in Arlington, TX), North Hills Mall (in North Richland Hills, TX), Irving Mall (in Irving, TX), Crossroads Mall (in Oklahoma City), Heritage Park Mall (in Midwest City, OK), Sheppard Mall (in Oklahoma City), and many more across the U.S.
On the other hand, the shopping malls that are successful will be more successful in years to come because they faced less competition from fewer shopping centers. They have plenty of room for renovation, expansion, and improvement. For example The Parks at Arlington (in Arlington, TX), Grapevine Mills (in Grapevine, TX), Northpark Center (in Dallas), Northeast Mall (in Hurst, TX), Penn Square Mall (in Oklahoma City), Quail Springs Mall (in Oklahoma City), and many more across the U.S.
