Wealthy Farmers Home, Northern cultural Museum
A wealthy farmer's house, a nostalgic reminder of the old Echigo Road.
On the west bank of the great Agano River which flows across the Kanbara Plain in Echigo, there is a little village called Soumi.
A family, which started out as farmers in this area in the middle of the Edo Period, grew richer from father to son until eventually they built up an enormous fortune and became the greatest landowners in Echigo.
The family's name was Ito.
During the Meiji Period, the family gradually acquired more land. In their heyday they owned fields covering 13.7 million m^2 spread over one city, four districts and 64 owns and villages.
In the Showa Period they were the most prosperous farmers in Niigata Prefecture with an annual rice harvest of over 30,000 bales.
This magnificent residence, a pure example of traditional Japanese architecture, was constructed over a period of eight years starting in 1882. This home built by the Ito family has withstood wind and snow for so many years.
It is a beautiful and magnificent place to see and also enjoy a wonderful meal even when it's chilly outside.

Japan Vlog 2- Field Trip, exploring Shibata and Niigata
Our second day of the JCLP (Japanese Culture and Language Program) was a field trip day of exploring the small town of Shibata where Keiwa is located. We toured the local Sake Brewery, explored the beautiful Japanese garden, and just walked the streets of this decaying yet beautiful town.
After school we met up with Mio, a Keiwa student who we had met at the welcome party, to go exploring the bigger city of Niigata. We went to eat at the really neat restaurant that Mio works at, and also she took us to a club to dance, but we ended up leaving soon because we were the only ones there.
This country never ceased to amaze me, and I loved seeing the contrast of the rural and the urban areas of the Niigata Prefecture.
