The Northern Forts - Ziemeļu forti, Liepāja Latvia
Here you can walk subterranean labyrinth and bunkers, get information about Liepāja Fortress, its history and construction.
The forts are a unique monument, built in 1893. Having been slowly eaten away by time and the sea, the old forts are now partially buried by dunes and some tumble into the sea. The underground bunkers are impressively extensive and quite unlike anything else in the world.
In November 1908 the fortress was liquidated, as its construction had been acknowledged a fiasco and strategic mistake.
When it turned out that the fortress was of no strategic importance, some of the cannons in the complex were dismantled, melted down, or taken to the Kaunas fortress in Lithuania.
There were also attempts to blow up the underground bunkers and armoury, but these were unsuccessful, and therefore they remain visible to this day. As you climb on top of and wander through the ruins of the fort, the wild waves of the Baltic Sea against the concrete might make you think you're by an ocean instead.

Flight above Northern and Southern Forts of Liepaja, Latvia.
The Northern Forts of Liepāja are on the edge of the Baltic Sea, and some parts of them have been washed away. This is a small, but very impressive part of the Liepāja fortifications which once encircled the entire town. The underground bunkers of the forts are on two levels, and it’s worth visiting them in the company of a knowledgeable guide from Karosta (tours are organised from the Karosta prison). There’s a car park alongside the forts. It’s also worth walking down the beach for a distance of around four kilometres to the Northern breakwater. On the shore and in the sea, you’ll see two coastal defence batteries and some pretty impressive views.
Southern Forts was built closer to the city, but also mostly destroyed by time.

Karosta Northern Forts- Latvia
Fortress and the Karosta canal were the first objects built in the whole massive military complex of Karosta.
In the end of 19th century forts and coastline fortifications with artillery defense were built in many places – Sveaborg island, forts along the Gulf of Finland, Kronstadt, Osovetz (now territory of Poland), chain of Bukovine and Bessarabian fortifications along Austrohungarian border.
Forts of Liepaja are similar to fort Port-Artur in the far east of Russia. Karosta fortifications were built from 1893 to 1906, work lead by author of the project, major-general Ivan Mc-Donald. Some parts of fortifications were connected by canals and narrow-gauge railway. There were 140 warships and 30 submarines for the Liepaja navy fleet.

A part of the cannons were dismantled and delivered to the Kaunas Fortress in Lithuania, while the other part was recast.
However, the desired result was reached and, this way, the remains of the Tsarist Russia fortress and also the later, more modern fortress, still stand today.

Karosta (War Port) is a neighbourhood in the north of Liepāja in western Latvia by the Baltic sea.
Karosta was constructed in 1890-1906 as a naval base for the Russian Tsar Alexander III, and later served as a base for the Soviet Baltic Fleet (see Western Russian fortresses). Now it is a very popular place for tourists and artists, since there are unique sights and interesting places, such as the scenic seascapes with partially blasted fortresses on the Baltic shore.
