St. Claire Regional Medical Center | Kentucky Life | KET
The mission of Rowan County's St. Claire Regional Medical Center is to proclaim God's goodness through a healing ministry to the people of Eastern Kentucky. When the center opened its doors in 1963, it had 41 beds, 9 nurses and 6 doctors. Today the hospital has 159 beds and sees about 500,000 patients each year.
Integral to the success of this Catholic, not-for-profit hospital is its partnership with the Sisters of Notre Dame of Covington, who have been involved from the start. The medical center is among six ministries sponsored by the Sisters, who have over 100 members in Covington.
The center is named in honor of Dr. Claire Louise Caudill, a beloved Morehead physician who advocated for the creation of the hospital. She served as its chief of staff from 1963 to 1972.

Volunteers Reach Out to Serve Others
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) -- Some some people in the tri-state, Christmas dinner would not have been possible without the help of others. For the 26th straight year, Mental Health America of Northern Kentucky and Southwest Ohio provided Christmas to hundreds in need. They formed a long line to be served a hot Christmas day meal. Another line snaked along the Northern Kentucky Convention Center offering families everything from presents to clothing and bags of food. Serving the nearly two thousand people in need were some 400 volunteers. Eunice Shackelford spends every Christmas serving others. I really enjoy doing this. I love the people and they're less fortunate than us and I believe God intends us to help the people that need help. So, I'm here. Local 12 News anchor Kit Andrews and her family were among those volunteering at this annual dinner. For some, volunteering on Christmas day brought them great joy as they brought joy to others. Volunteer Joey Bender said, It doesn't hurt to give back, give back as much as you possibly can year around. Just keep doing it and if you can get out there, get out there. It helps you, it helps them. Even Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand. Some children were eager to visit with the jolly couple; others not so much. While many of the people being served Wednesday are homeless, others are in need because of a tough economy. Money is short. Some have lost jobs or homes and they need help. He recently lost his job, I'm a student right now and I'm not working. It's just, trying to get by and we didn't have any kind of Christmas dinner today.Stephanie McDaniel says this is the first time she has had to reach out for help. She found it here on Christmas day saying, My son is smiling he's enjoying himself so seeing him enjoy himself is helping me enjoy myselfThe Christmas day event has grown over the years. The first year, 35 people attended. Now hundreds are served.

Chief's order: Commonwealth's Attorney, staff must have escort inside PD
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - Kenton Co. Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders and his staff are no longer allowed inside the Covington Police Dept. without an escort, according to an order obtained through an open records request.
Chief Bryan Carter issued the order to his staff June 23, but it has been in effect since March, Carter said. Prior to March, Sanders and his assistant prosecutors had key cards that allowed them to enter restricted areas of the police department.
“Obviously there were some issues with trust and that’s about all that I can say about it,” Chief Carter said. “Members of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office are allowed in the building. They just have to have an escort while they’re inside the building.”
Chief Carter conceded his decision to restrict Sanders and his staff’s movements inside the police department was an unusual step since they prosecute felony cases investigated by Covington Police.
Angenette Levy: “Do you have confidence in him [Sanders]?”
Chief Bryan Carter: “I believe he has the ability to prosecute cases if that’s what you mean by confidence.”
Angenette Levy: “Do you think he should be prosecuting cases?”
Chief Bryan Carter: “I don’t have any comment on that.”
Four Covington Police officers are assigned to federal task forces. Carter said an email obtained through an open records request outlines one of the trust issues. A Covington Police detective raised concerns in February about Sanders’ lack of cooperation in federal cases following a meeting with Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Casey Burns. The detective wrote:
“Mr. Burns advised us his boss instructed him to tell us that they wouldn’t assist in getting out any inmate for any federal agency to work. Mr. Burns stated the reasoning for this was because his boss wasn’t willing to take on the liability if the confidential informant got out and hurt or killed someone. Mr. Burns advised his boss said if we wanted to get out the individual and work them as a confidential informant we needed to take their current case federal and as a result the confidential informant would be let out by the FBI on federal charges and not state charges taking the liability off of them. Mr. Burns then stated his boss was ok with getting this individual out if the Covington Police Department was willing to sign the confidential informant up and work them on the state level.”
Carter said he met with Sanders to discuss the lack of cooperation earlier this week.
“That is a little bit unusual for the Commonwealth Attorney to not cooperate with federal agencies. We are trying to work through those differences now and hopefully in the near future we can get past the cooperation issue with the federal agencies,” Carter said.
Local 12 has contacted Rob Sanders four times asking for an interview. He has not accepted the invitation. Emails were also sent to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Lexington for comment. The FBI did not respond to the email. A spokesperson from the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined comment for this story.
Earlier this week, Local 12 News reported that Rob Sanders filed a police report with Ft. Mitchell police reporting that a county-issued handgun was stolen from his unlocked vehicle in his garage. Sanders filed the report July 12, and said he left his garage door open because he had friends over. Sanders said someone took $10 in change and the Taurus PT-92 9 mm handgun. Ft. Mitchell police Chief Andrew Schierberg said Friday, August 5, the case remains under investigation.

This bowl-shaped basin is one of the state's three major stamping grounds. Formed when bison herds trampled the soil by the spring, the area was at the junction of several trails used by migrating herds. After the bison left, the spring served the area's human inhabitants who settled the town of Herndonsville (later Stamping Ground) in the early 1800's. (The city of Stamping Ground recently purchased the section of land that contains the spring, have built a picnic shelter, and named it Buffalo Springs Park.) -- This area first explored in April 1775 by WM. McConnell, Charles Lecompete and party from Penn. Buffalo herds had stamped down undergrowth and ground around the spring - origin if town's name.--

Cincinnati leaders give Millennium Hotel owner an ultimatum: Clean up or shut down
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - After years of asking the owners of Cincinnati’s Millennium Hotel to clean up, city leaders are now giving the owners an ultimatum: Clean up or shut down.
Mayor John Cranley and Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Deters say they plan to file a public nuisance lawsuit against the hotel's operators, which would shut down the hotel until it’s repaired or sold.
The hotel, which is the only hotel connected to the Duke Energy Center, is not a crowd-pleaser.
“It’s a big square building,” said Evan Lewis, who works in downtown Cincinnati. “Probably could use an update.
“It kind of needs some work,” said Jeff Little, who was visiting Cincinnati for a convention. “You figure with it being in the heart of Cincinnati, it would have some pride behind it, look a little better.
Some downtown visitors say while it's not a five-star place, it doesn't look that bad.
Cincinnati deserves the best there is, but I don't think this is offensive in any way,” said Ryan Ramsey.
But Deters says the inside of the hotel is where it gets offensive.
It's got bed bug issues, the carpets are destroyed, there's vermin issues, apparently, and we're going to get that from the health department, but Mayor Cranley, to his credit, has tried to get them to clean this place up,” Deters said on 700 WLW Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement, the hotel's owners are pushing back saying:
We have not seen any details of the alleged case yet, so we cannot make any specific comments at this time. Should the lawsuit be brought formally, we will carefully review it and respond accordingly.
The statement goes on to say:
We take pride in our staff and quality of service we provide, and have had no specific ‘nuisance’ complaints from guests, employees or immediate neighbors of the Millennium Hotel Cincinnati that would merit such an action. However, we are aware of the general challenges faced by the convention center and we will be pleased to listen to the views of the City, County and other stakeholders as we review our options in respect of the property.
A timeline for when the lawsuit will be filed has not been released just yet, but a similar lawsuit was filed against the Terrace Plaza Hotel last week.
