Alaska 2018 - 6 [Liard Hot Springs to Watson Lake & Signpost Forest]
Time to leave the hot springs behind and get on down the road. See the accompanying blog post here:
It wasn’t a big animal day on the way to Watson Lake. Well, that’s kind of a lot actually!
Wild animal tally: 5 bison, 4 bears
Before you get to Watson Lake, you’ll see a gas station that says it’s cheaper than Watson Lake. It is by a few cents a liter so if you need gas it’s worth filling up there.
We stayed the night at Watson Lake Campground ( which is in Yukon so we get to put another sticker on our map! It’s CAD $12/night and you pay the iron ranger. We stayed in site 44 in the second loop on the lake and is a large pull-through. That site has a little path down to the lake but there were loads of mosquitos down there. The campground only has vault toilets and water that you are supposed to boil before using. The do have free firewood throughout the campground though.
Cell signal in the town of Watson Lake is good - 4 bars of LTE. But at the campground we were getting 3 bars of 3G. It was enough to get the job done.
There’s a small grocery store in town that has the basics. We only bought a couple of things since we plan to restock in Whitehorse.
We stopped in at the Northern Lights Center ( to watch the presentation. It’s two 30-minute films back to back. The first is about how the northern lights form and the second focuses more on the actual displays. I think it was CAD $10/person. We thought it was worth it.
Before we left town, we stopped at the Sign Post Forest ( to put up our sign and take in the spectacle. It’s also where we recorded the intro.
All videos shot on an iPhone X ( and edited with iMovie.

Hey! I'm Shannon and I've been traveling with my daughter Talula (Sweet T) and our 3 dogs since June 2016! We have visited 40 states, 2 Canadian provinces and have driven over 30,000 miles together! We currently live in and travel in a 30ft Class C Tioga Ranger motorhome, but we previously traveled with a Nissan Xterra that towed a 20ft Rockwood Mini-Lite travel trailer. We boondock (free-camp, dry-camp, off-grid) about 90% of the time. We've camped at Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, Cabelas, casinos, airports, and on public lands. I am a photographer and writer, but most importantly, i'm a mother.

Snow Storm Haines Junction - March 18, 2019
What crazy weather the world seems to be getting these days. This snowstorm hit overnight on the evening of March 17th and morning of March 18th, 2019. I commute to Whitehorse from the Junction daily during the week and the first 15 miles was a slushy mess and non-stop snow as you can see by the photos.
In Whitehorse though, it was beautiful

Hangin in Fort Nelson, Canada! Day 12
Today was a pretty good day in Fort Nelson. We got some pretty decent sleep last night, then got up and put in a full day of work. It was pretty nice, not having to worry about getting on the road afterwards, we may be on to something here.
After work, we decided to do a little exploring. Our neighbors told us about the bike paths here, so we went off to ride some of them. Candace wanted a bell for her bike (bears), so we hit up a local bike shop and hit the trail – it was a pretty good little ride, about 10K.
After the ride, we hit up a little gym called Iron Alley – perfect for us, decent equipment, and a good workout.
This evening, we cooked some food and relaxed. May even get an episode of Game of Thrones in. Hoping to get to bed early and get some sleep.
All in all, Fort Nelson has been a pretty nice little stop. They’re well set up for travelers – great visitors center, two RV dump/water stations, a recreation center complete with pool, indoor track, and rock climbing wall, and some decent biking/hiking trails. They even have a nice little park with some water attractions for the kids!

MacBride Museum - Yukon's Wild History
No trip to the Yukon is complete without a stop at the fantastic McBride Museum of Yukon History in Whitehorse. If you want to get a quick run through of the fascinating history of the north, then there is no better place than here.
The museum tells the fascinating stories of the events and people that built Canada's Yukon and the place is literally overflowing with memorabilia and artifacts (over 24,000 pieces to be exact!). A huge complex sprawling across several buildings and out into various courtyards the many exhibits showcase actual artifacts that were salvaged from the destructive hands of time; many by the passionate man named Bill MacBride, the driving force behind the creation of the Yukon's first official museum.
The museum is full of historical gems like locomotive Engine 51 that carried the gold rush seekers across the treacherous White Pass to stake their claims to fortune, the famous log cabin of the iconic Yukon character Sam McGee, an 1898 Miners Saloon with a unique story of how it came to the museum, fur trappers gear and artifacts, First Nations history and even a hands-on gold panning station where you can try your own hand at striking it rich!
Our guide for our tour through the museum was Leighann Chalykoff, the Communications Director at the museum. She knew lots about the history of the north and was very proud of the MacBride Museum. She said it was one of the Yukon's most popular stops for tourists and they received visitors from all over the world all year long. Summer was especially busy as they run special exhibits and events, including many events for kids but she was especially proud of that fact that they are the only museum in the Yukon that is open all winter long!
So next time you hit the north, be sure to stop by; even if it's in the winter when you're up above the 50th parallel in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). And when you're there be sure to say hi to Chris for us. He never continued on the tour but stayed behind in the Yukon to become a trapper. With that beard he at least looks the part.
Good luck Chris!
