CAPTION: Three months after a tornado claimed 160 lives, students in Joplin, Missouri returned to school Wednesday. The new school stands in a converted mall and every student will receive a laptop courtesy of a donation by the United Arab Emirates. (Aug. 17)
STORYLINE:
The trophy case by the front entrance is nearly empty. Classroom walls are largely bare, and unopened boxes of textbooks, computer monitors and other equipment remain scattered throughout the building.
Signs of unfinished business remain at what is now Joplin High''s upper-level campus _ a converted big-box retail store at the city''s mall, well outside the worst-hit areas from a late May tornado that killed 160 people, injured hundreds more and destroyed thousands of buildings, including the city''s only public high school.
On Wednesday, as Joplin students and teachers went back to school less than three months after country''s single deadliest tornado in six decades cut the previous school year short, no one seemed to mind the shortcomings.
After months of hauling debris, attending friends'' funerals, watching endless TV images of their destroyed school and trying to put their lives back together, it was finally time to get back to what passes for normal in Joplin.
You can''t pretend like nothing happened, said English teacher Brenda White. But everything is so new here. Every single thing that is this school is new and different.
It''s going to take a while to build everything back, but books are a good start, she said while stocking her classrooms with copies of The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner and other literary staples, past and present.
The school system was hit especially hard by the May 22 tornado. Seven students and one employee were among the victims, including a senior pulled from his car by vicious winds on his way home from Joplin High''s Sunday afternoon graduation ceremony. Six school buildings were destroyed, including Joplin High. Seven other buildings were badly damaged.
School district leaders quickly realized that they would play an outsized role in Joplin''s recovery, for reasons symbolic as much as practical. They expanded the hours and locations of summer school, well aware that the community''s children needed a reassuring routine _ and their parents the time to deal with insurance agents, contractors and social service agencies.
They cobbled together a hodge-podge of temporary locations for fall classes, from the old Shopko store at Northpark Mall to the recently-vacated Missouri Department of Transportation district office where the superintendent and other administrators now work. Rival elementary schools combined, and a middle school found space in an industrial park.
Even in a corner of the country where hard work is cherished, the swiftness of the transformation was striking, White said.
I''ve always known people are strong here. But this has really brought it home, she said. People are so strong. They just get up, dust off and go to work. That''s what we do here.
Students arrived at the mall school Wednesday morning to a bevy of well-wishers holding Joplin High signs and lining the entrance road. Some met in modular classrooms, right next to a row of concrete-lined storm shelters. Others lingered in the hallways, reuniting with old friends.
They raved about the school''s college-like feel, complete with Joplin Joe''s coffee bar and free laptops for each student thanks to a donation from the United Arab Emirates worth as much as $1 million.
Count their parents and adult relatives among the most impressed by the transformation.

IT''S HARD TO TELL- BUT THIS WAS JOPLIN HIGH SCHOOL
PILES OF MANGLED DEBRIS REMAIN AND MEMORIES GONE
THE STUDENTS CHANGED THE SIGN OUTSIDE TO READ HOPE HIGH.
NEARLY 3 MONTHS AFTER 160 PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY AN F5 TORNADO-JOPLIN HIGH SCHOOL HAS RE-OPENED
AT THE LOCAL MALL
It''s pretty unbelievable-you know-we heard all the rumors at first and it was like no way that cant be true-we are not going to school at the mall they will find a different building for us.
NEIGHBOR TO SEARS AND MACY''S
IN A FORMER DEPARTMENT STORE THAT WAS RE-CONSTRUCTED OVER THE SUMMER
It was amazing-we had all the approvals in less than 30 days and the construction was complete in 60 days.
We are anticipating being here for 3 years so hopefully we are breaking ground next summer.
ON THE SAME LAND WHERE THE ORIGINAL JOPLIN HIGH STILL SITS-IN ALL THAT WRECKAGE
It''s overwhelming-I mean-we grew up in Joplin High School-senior year-pumped about it-but there is nothing we can do about it.
YOU CAN SEE BEHIND ME DOZENS OF BACKPACKS FILLED WITH LAPTOPS-JUST LIKE THIS-EVERY STUDENT IN THE HIGH SCHOOL WILL RECEIVE ONE.
AND THAT''S COURTESY OF A FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR DONATION BY THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES-TWENTY TWO HUNDRED-HIGH TECH-FULLY CONNECTED STUDENTS
SO-WHY DID THE UAE MAKE SUCH A GENEROUS GIFT?
When we knew we lost our High School-we said-we don''t want to re-build our old High School-we want to build a place that prepares our kids for the 21st century-and actually the UAE found out about our desire from reading an article from the AP.
THIS HIGH SCHOOL MADE THE CITY HAPPY AND PROUD IN A TIME WHEN JOPLIN NEEDS IT MOST.
I appreciate life a lot more-I have definitely changed for the better because of this.
AS MUCH OF JOPLIN STILL REMAINS IN RUBBLE-TODAY-THE SPIRIT OF A COMMUNITY DETERMINED TO GO ON -BLEW THROUGH THE SACRED GROUNDS OF WHAT WAS ONCE HOME TO THOUSANDS

thelope.com - Coming home for Christmas to Joplin, Missouri, 1991
In the early 1990s I carried a Hi8 camcorder almost everywhere, determined to record the exceptional and the mundane for posterity. Though even I thought I was getting carried away at times, now I wish I'd shot more, and shot better. Here is the last part of the 5-hour drive home to Joplin from Hutchinson, KS, on Dec 23, 1991, accompanied by the occasional protesting sounds of Pooky, the cat shared by my girlfriend of the time and I.
The video starts with a dubiously focused view traveling south on Main Street; the Sony TR81 camcorder was terrible about losing focus in odd lighting and would lock on to anything on the windshield because the system was contrast-based (and I was shooting while driving - not recommended, kids). You can see the illuminated Watts Paint neon sign - one of the last old neon signs on Joplin's bit of Route 66 and now sadly gone. Now-defunct businesses are seen (i.e. Kassab) and other signs have been converted (i.e. Tick-O-Time Jewelry). I then turned off Main at 10th st where things were just too dark to record. My very own mom is seen opening the door to our family house at 13th and Connor (she has long-since moved).
On Christmas Eve we drove through the annual Joplin luminaria which was from 26th to 32nd streets on Minnesota. Some of those houses did not survive the 2011 tornado
St John's hospital, another victim of the 2011 tornado, is then seen with its Christmas lights. Then we view a house with a now-scarce blow molded nativity scene. The video closes with a view of mom's Christmas tree, with one addition by me: Hallmark's first Star Trek ornament, the original show's U.S.S. Enterprise.
After school fight led to shots fired near Joplin High School
A planned after school 'fight' in an alley took a heated turn on Monday, ½ block from Joplin High School.
“Our understanding is there was an agreement made that a couple of teenagers were going to fight [after school], and it was somewhat widely known, so a large group of people showed up to watch,” Capt Trevor Duncan tells Joplin News First.
“And then the fight turned into shots being fired.” The crowd then scattered through a six block area.
Police had to talk with more than two-dozen juveniles and adults (meaning 17+) as witnesses or participants.
NEW INFORMATION
Monday evening the 15 year old juvenile male was transported from the incident via ambulance. He was treated for injuries in the after school altercation.
“After he was treated and released, he was detained by the juvenile office for firing the weapon,” Capt Trevor Duncan said, “Since he was a juvenile we don't know if he is charged. That is because he is not an adult.”
The weapon initially was thought to have been fired by a 17 year old adult male. It's been determined the adult male did carry the weapon after it was fired.
Then that adult male disposed of the weapon in a storm drain grate. It was recovered by JPD. Charges have not been filed against that 17 year old adult male.
“That is still part of the investigation that charges could be filed,” Duncan states.

When will they Rebuild Joplin?
Joplin High School celebrates rebuilding in the 5 years since 2011 tornado
The Joplin tornado of 2011 took place on an afternoon like this one: one where families had gathered to celebrate their children's graduation from school and look forward to the future. Now, students whose lives were touched by the tragedy are figuring out the next steps for themselves and their community.
