Today we visit the Norwegain city of Alesund, which was the scene of a fire on January 23, 1904 that burned down almost the entire town. The city was rebuilt with stone, brick, and mortar in the Art Nouveau architectural style, which is what gives the town its characteristic to this day.

Ålesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord.
Ålesund is a bustling town, that is situated between mountians and ocean. The town is Norway's fisheries capital, and one of the world's largest export harbours for dried cod.

Our visit to Ålesund, the third port of call on our Norwegian Fjords cruise with Royal Caribbean in August 2018.
We took a Hop On Hop Off bus to Sunnmøre Museum, an open-air museum with historic homes to explore and a collection of period boats from medieval times to present. With beautiful weather, this was a really lovely way to spend most of our day in Ålesund. We had a great time exploring all the houses.
We then got back on the bus and took the rest of the tour around Ålesund, up to the Fjellstua viewpoint and then back down to the Art Nouveau city centre for a short walk back to the ship.

Where the mountains meet the sea, Ålesund is actually made up of five smaller islands. The town is known for being a popular sea port and one of the best fishing harbors in Norway. This makes for beautiful views of the town and ocean--the best view being found with just a short hike up the hill.
In addition to the sea, the town’s architecture adds to the wonder of this place. After a fire in 1904 that destroyed much of the village, all of the buildings had to be reconstructed. As a result, most of the buildings standing today were built between 1904-1907, making Ålesund famous for its “art nouveau” architecture. By just walking around the streets, you are surrounded by beautiful buildings and sights in a lovely little town amidst the fresh sea air--trust me, there’s nothing like it.

Alesund is a major fishing port and the commercial centre of the Sunnmøre district, with picturesque quays that bustle with activity all day long as fish catches are landed, argo shifted and the coastal ferry comes and goes.
This small but perfectly formed fishing port sits on islands connected by bridges in the northern part of Norway’s fjord area, and is an ideal base for exploring this spectacular area of coastal scenery.

Norway / Alesund - Trollstigen
Today we continued to explore Alesund. We visited the Atlantic Sea Park which was great and the next day we visited Trollstigen which was awesome. We also had a nice hike at Andalsnes.

Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Ålesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.
Norway is a Scandinavian country encompassing mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords. Oslo, the capital, is a city of green spaces and museums. Preserved 9th-century Viking ships are displayed at Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum. Bergen, with colorful wooden houses, is the starting point for cruises to the dramatic Sognefjord. Norway is also known for fishing, hiking and skiing, notably at Lillehammer’s Olympic resort.

DAY 14 - ALESUND, NORWAY
First time in Alesund and I love it! Little bit rainy today, but trust me this weather is nothing compare to some of the weather in Norway at this time of year. Today was totally spontaneous day and I decided to go up to the view point, walk around this beautiful city and have some good food. I feel truly blessed to pin another city to my memories collection. Enjoy! ????
