GREAT BRITAIN: NORWICH (Norfolk, England, UK)
Norwich is a city in Norfolk, England. Granted historic city status, and situated on the River Wensum in East Anglia, it lies approximately 100 miles (160 km) north-east of London. It is the county town of Norfolk and is considered the capital of East Anglia, with a population of 141,300. From the Middle Ages until the Industrial Revolution, Norwich was the largest city in England after London, and one of the most important.
The city is the most complete medieval city in the United Kingdom, including cobbled streets such as Elm Hill, Timber Hill and Tombland, ancient buildings such as St Andrew's Hall, half-timbered houses such as Dragon Hall, The Guildhall and Strangers' Hall, the Art Nouveau of the 1899 Royal Arcade, many medieval lanes and the winding River Wensum that flows through the city centre towards Norwich Castle.
The city has two universities, the University of East Anglia and the Norwich University of the Arts, and two cathedrals, Norwich Cathedral and St John the Baptist Cathedral.
Norwich holds the largest permanent undercover market in Europe. The urban area of Norwich had a population of 213,166 according to the 2011 Census. The parliamentary seats cross over into adjacent local government districts. A total of 132,512 (2011 census) people live in the City of Norwich, and the population of the Norwich Travel to Work Area (i.e., the self-contained labour market area in and around Norwich in which most people live and commute to work) is 282,000 (mid-2009 estimate).
Norwich is the fourth most densely populated local government district in the East of England, with 3,480 people per square kilometre (8,993 per square mile).
In May 2012, Norwich was designated England's first UNESCO City of Literature. One of the UK's most popular tourist destinations, it was voted by The Guardian in 2016 as the happiest city to work in the UKand in 2013 as one of the best small cities in the world by The Times Good University Guide. In 2018, Norwich was voted one of the Best Places To Live in the UK by The Sunday Times.

Norwich Cathedral is an English cathedral located in Norwich, Norfolk, dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. It is the cathedral church for the Church of England Diocese of Norwich and is one of the Norwich 12 heritage sites.
The cathedral was begun in 1096 and constructed out of flint and mortar and faced with a cream-coloured Caen limestone. A Saxon settlement and two churches were demolished to make room for the buildings. The cathedral was completed in 1145 with the Norman tower still seen today topped with a wooden spire covered with lead. Several episodes of damage necessitated rebuilding of the east end and spire but since the final erection of the stone spire in 1480 there have been few fundamental alterations to the fabric,More Info

55ft-tall helter skelter installed in Norwich cathedral
A cathedral has installed a 55ft-tall helter skelter in its nave in order to grant visitors a better view of its medieval ornate roof. The funfair ride has a viewing platform at 40ft, allowing riders closer to Norwich Cathedral's 69ft-high roof - if they are willing to part with £2-per-slide. Reverend Canon Andy Bryant said the idea came to him during a visit to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, adding that he hoped it would incite more visitors to the cathedral. He said he understood that traditionalists may question the decision to install the helter skelter, but he believed people would accept it when it was explained. Ceiling bosses are seen at points where the ribs of the cathedral roof join and date back to the mid 15th century when a new roof was built following a fire.

Note although they say admission is free they also beg - something which annoys me - either charge for admission or don't. Fortunately in the rest of Europe the church is more enlightened and want people to visit.
Norwich Cathedral installs 16.7-metre-tall fairground ride in nave
Footage filmed on Tuesday shows people taking a ride on a helter-skelter installed in the nave of Norwich Cathedral in Norfolk.
According to Reverend Canon Andy Bryant, the 16.7-metre-tall (55-foot) fairground ride has been built inside the cathedral to grant visitors a better view of its amazing roof bosses and the story that they tell, which is the story of the Bible.

Norwich Cathedral helter-skelter 'not a gimmick'
The clergy at a cathedral has been accused of being unprofessional and poisoning the medicine a church offers by installing a fairground ride.
A full-size vintage helter-skelter has been put in the nave of Norwich Cathedral, believed to be a UK first, to offer people a different view of the inside of the building.
The Right Reverend Dr Gavin Ashenden, former chaplain to the Queen, said the cathedral had made a mistake.
The cathedral said it was a creative way to share the story of the Bible.
It's fun, but it is about serious, really serious matters in trying to get people to think about the meaning of life.
To think about their place in the world, the Very Reverend Jane Hedge, Dean of Norwich Cathedral, said.

Norwich Cathedral
SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :
This is the cathedral at Norwich in the UK which is the first part of a series of films which I have prepared on this city.
The sheer size of Norwich cathedral bears witness to the impact made on the City by the conquering Normans. Following their victory at Hastings in 1066, the Normans quickly stamped their dominance over their new kingdom by building scores of cathedrals and monasteries as well as hundreds of parish churches and castles. Norwich Castle was completed by 1075. In 1094 the seat of the East Anglian bishops was moved from Thetford to the fast-expanding city of Norwich.
In 1096, the foundation stone was laid at the eastern end of the new Cathedral and an immense building project was begun.
Even today, the size and grandeur of the Cathedral creates feelings of awe and wonder. To eleventh and twelfth-century citizens of Norwich, the building must have appeared incredible a sure sign not only of the greatness of God, but also of the power and permanence of the Norman invaders.
