La région de l'Algarve a été conquise par les Maures au 8e siècle et l'architecture et la culture de la ville de Tavira en témoignent encore aujourd'hui.
Nous avons garé notre voiture dans un grand stationnement, celui-ci étant gratuit, et sommes partis effectuer une balade afin de découvrir le centre historique de Tavira.
Nous sommes d'abord passé devant la chapelle de São Roque (Ermida de São Roque) qui aurait été probablement érigée au 16e siècle mais aurait été reconstruite au milieu du 18e siècle.
Elle ne peut être visitée pour le moment car elle est en attente de travaux de restauration.
Tout près, devant le poste de pompiers, il y a une statue qui leur rend hommage.
Nous nous sommes dirigés vers une résidence située sur la rue das Olarias afin d'y admirer sa jolie porte traditionnelle. Une magnifique oeuvre d'art!
Nous avons traversé le Largo das Portas do Postigo afin d'arriver à la Pousada Convento de Tavira, un élégant bâtiment d'un jaune éclatant qui abrite un hôtel, mais qui auparavant était un couvent.
Pour nous rendre aux ruines du château, nous sommes passés devant deux belles églises. Il faut dire que Tavira en possède une trentaine!
La première est l'Église de Saint-Jacques (Igreja de Santiago) dont la façade avant présente un médaillon qui représente la lutte de Saint-Jacques à cheval contre les Maures.
Sa construction remonte certainement au 13e siècle. Il s'agirait d'une ancienne mosquée.
Le côté droit de cette église comporte des formes architecturales très variées, comme si des modifications auraient été effectuées dans le temps.
A proximité de celle-ci se trouve l'Église de Sainte Marie du Château (Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo). Nous ne l'avons pas visité.
Elle contient les tombeaux de plusieurs chevaliers qui ont été tués par les Maures lors de la conquête de la ville.
Tout près de cette église se trouvent les ruines d'un château. Il n'en reste que les murailles sur le dessus desquelles nous pouvons marcher et ainsi obtenir de jolis points de vue sur la ville.
L'intérieur du château contient un superbe jardin fleuri ainsi que de magnifiques arbres.
La visite est gratuite.
Nous sommes passés devant l'église de la Miséricorde (Igreja da Misericórdia), Son portail est sensationnel.
On y voit entre autres la statue de Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde sous un baldaquin entourée de deux anges qui tiennent les rideaux ainsi que les statues de Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul.
De chaque côté du baldaquin se trouvent les armoiries du Portugal et de Tavira.
Le portail comporte également plusieurs autres éléments décoratifs.
Nous nous sommes dirigés par la suite vers la Place de la République (Praça da República).
Elle est entourée de jolis bâtiments dont certains abritent l'Hôtel de Ville, l'Office du Tourisme ainsi que des restaurants et boutiques.
Tout près se situe le pont romain (Ponte Romana) qui est un des principaux symboles de la ville de Tavira. Il relie les deux parties de la ville entre elles puisqu'elles sont séparées par la rivière Gilhao.
Nous en avons donc profité pour traverser ce pont et nous rendre au Jardin da Alagoa qui se situe dans l'autre partie de la ville.
Il s'agit d'un magnifique endroit pour prendre une petite pause. Il est entouré de splendides bâtiments traditionnels.
Derrière ce jardin se trouve l'église Notre-Dame du Secours, également appelée Saint-Paul (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda / São Paulo). Elle a été érigée au 17e siècle.
Cette partie de la ville est également très intéressante à visiter car on y découvre de magnifiques demeures.
Nous nous sommes rendus jusqu'à l'Église de Notre-Dame du Carmel (Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo) construite au 18e siècle.
En cours de route, nous avons croisé la Chapelle de Saint-Blaise (Igreja de São Bras) devant laquelle se dresse le buste de Francisco Manuel Alvares Botelho, ancien maire de Tavira et fondateur de Montepio Geral qui a contribué à établir la première caisse économique du pays.
Nous sommes revenus sur nos pas et avons traversé le pont romain et nous avons fait une petite balade en bordure de la rivière.
L'eau est tellement limpide que l'on peut y observer de petits bancs de poissons.
Les hirondelles sont omniprésentes dans plusieurs villes du Portugal. Tavira n'y échappe pas.
